Jaars-Townsend Airport (FAA LID: N52) is a small private airport located in the CDP of Jaars, Union County, North Carolina, which is located within the town of Waxhaw.[1] The airport is owned by JAARS, a Christian non-profit organization based in Waxhaw which provides missionary aviation and Bible translation services. Opened in 1961, the airport is named after W. C. Townsend, the founder of JAARS.[2]
Between August 2021 and August 2022, the airport operated 13,000 total flights, with 92% of operations being local general aviation flights and the remaining 8% being transient general aviation.[3]
Operations[edit]
Jaars Airport serves as the base for JAARS' air operations. From the airport, JAARS provides air transportation for Christian missionaries traveling to remote areas of the world. It also serves as the base for the organization's aircraft funding, specialized training, technical support, custom equipment, pilots and mechanics, flight subsidies, research, and certification programs.[4]
Jaars airport also serves as the base for Wings Over Waxhaw, a non-profit flying club based in Waxhaw, which stores its one Cessna 172 at the airport.[5] Thirteen total aircraft are stationed at Jaars Airport, twelve single-engine airplanes and one helicopter.[3]
