Eastern Medical College (EMC) (Bengali: ইস্টার্ন মেডিকেল কলেজ) is a private medical college in Bangladesh, established in 2005. The campus of this college is located beside the Dhaka–Chittagong Highway at Kabila in Burichang Upazila, in the Comilla District of Chittagong Division. It is affiliated with University of Chittagong and Chittagong Medical University.

It offers a five-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. A one-year internship after graduation is compulsory for all graduates. The degree is recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

The campus has an attached hospital with 600 beds.

Several prominent citizens and doctors in cumilla district, namely, Mr. Shah Md. Selim Ph.D, Dr. Musleh Uddin Ahmed, Dr. Kalim Ullah, Dr. Abdul Quddus Akhand and Mr. Md. Abdur Rauf took an initiative to establish a private medical college in cumilla district. As a result of their efforts, this college was established in 2005 as the first private medical college of cumilla. One of the founding directors and founding chairman of this college is Dr. Shah Md. Selim, who is currently serving as the managing director of the college and hospital. Dr. Kamrun Naher is currently serving as the chairman of the governing body of the college.[2][3]

The campus is located beside the Dhaka–Chittagong Highway at Kabila in Burichang Upazila, in the Comilla District of Chittagong Division.[3] Land Area of the college campus is 7.5 acres. The campus has an attached 600-bed hospital consists of two multi-storied building.[2]In addition to this, there is an academic and administrative building, a multi-storied male students dormitory, a multi-storied female students dormitory, an intern doctor's dormitory, a canteen, a mosque, a swimming pool, two playgrounds and doctors' residences .

Affiliation and administration[edit]

Prior to 2017, the college was affiliated with Chittagong University as a medical college. Currently, it is a constituent college of Chittagong Medical University. The college is governed by a Governing Body, which is reconstituted every four years through a joint initiative of the Board of Directors of the college, academic council of Chittagong Medical University and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. [4]Additionally, there is a Board of Directors comprising the college's founders and shareholders.The college is approved by the Directorate general of Health Service and the Directorate General of Medical Education of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is affiliated with the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. The college is also listed as a medical education institution by the World Federation for Medical Education and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research. Furthermore, the medical college is a member of the Southeast Asia Regional Association for Medical Education and has received recognition from the World Health Organization.[3][5][2]

Academics[edit]

The college offers a five-year course of study, approved by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree of Chittagong Medical University. But prior to 2017, students at this college was received Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree of University of Chittagong. After passing the final professional examination, there is a compulsory one-year internship. This internship is a prerequisite for obtaining registration from the BMDC to practice medicine.[3][6]

In addition, the institution is affiliated with the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). Postgraduate training for the FCPS course of the BCPS in the disciplines of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Dermatology can be completed at college's hospital.

In addition to Bangladeshi students, the college also enrolls students from other asian countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. 45% of the total seats in the college are reserved for international students.

Admission for Bangladeshis to the MBBS programme at all medical colleges in Bangladesh (government and private) is conducted centrally by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). It administers a written multiple choice question exam simultaneously throughout the country. Candidates are admitted based primarily on their score on this test, although grades at Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) level also play a part. As of July 2017, the college is allowed to admit 115 students annually.[7]
