Best Screenplay is a category of awards frequently bestowed by film awards ceremonies at various levels (and some television awards), recognizing achievements in the writing of screenplays. In many cases, such awards are divided between "Best Original Screenplay" for an entirely new work, and "Best Adapted Screenplay" for a screenplay adapted from a previous work, although the relationship between the original work and the adaptation may be tenuous. Some national awards ceremonies offer awards for the best screenplay produced in that country, and separate awards for "foreign" screenplays.
