Move to Wiktionary?

I think it will be difficult to decide whether the contents of these articles belong in a dictionary or an encyclopedia. Certainly, while name etymology and international variations may, information about name popularity in various regions at various times does not seem to belong in a dictionary. Other details of onomastics, such as nicknames, how a particular name is typical of a culture at a specific time, etc, are also not relevant to a dictionary, but would fit well with Wikipedia. --jnothman ^talk 02:37, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

• It shouldn't be the intent to move the entire category to Wiktionary; rather, people interested in transwikiing could look here (among other places) for individual articles that would belong there. Radiant_>|< 11:01, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

Pronunciation

Could we incorporate the pronunciation of names in the given name articles? I know there are many names out there that have people confused on the pronunciation. Having a quick pronunciation guide will help them. What do others think? JMlover 19:14, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Categorize the names by sex?

There are many Wikipedias in other languages which maintain separate categories for male and female given names. How could we go about that here, when there are a few names shared by males and females, etc.? - GilliamJF 04:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

• I think that's a good idea. Maybe we could create some sort of table (like the ones used for quick information) that says if the name is more of a male's name, more of a female's name, or completely unisex. We could aslo incorporate different variations of the name and how the name is pronounced in this box. Would that sound fine? JMlover 19:07, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

• According to the categorisation guidelines, names should not have Category:Given Names but only Masculine and/or Feminine (plus unisex if both). How male or female a name is should be described in the text of the article, with statistics to back it up. DenisHowe (talk) 23:02, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Remove Adam (disambiguation)

Remove Adam (disambiguation). Under it is the name Adam which goes directly to the article name adam. So take the disambiguation out. {i took it out} If you don't think its right, u can put it back but please let me know why in my page. Thanks!

Why can't I find my name here?

Why can't someone find a name they are interest in here? There are three likely possibilities:

1. A strange notion embodied in the big tag at the top of the page about "moving" articles to subcategories, that that you should have to know the national or ethnic source of a name, or the gender of the name-holder, or both, in order to find a name. Look through the tree of subcategories.
   1. But you should realize that for many of the multi-ethnic names, you might find them only under Chinese given names or one of the other subcategories, not necessarily all appropriate subcategories.
   2. Note also that the breakdown by sex isn't just by male and female; there are also special categories for "unisex" names.
2. A name might redirect to another disamguation page which might appear nearby or in a part of this category listing far removed from it. That redirect could have been categorized, but hasn't been yet. If you don't know how to do it, see JHunterJ's suggestions in the main section above, and Wikipedia:Redirects and Wikipedia:Categorization for more information.

Fourth Possibility
There is no article for your name by itself as a name. The articles for Apollo and Artemis are about the gods. The article for Zachary is redirected to Zechariah. This is a category not a list. In order for an article to be represented here there must be a category tag on the article. JimCubb (talk) 16:38, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
