The ArCHIAM Centre (Centre for the Study of Architecture and Cultural Heritage of India, Arabia and the Maghreb) is an interdisciplinary research centre based at the University of Liverpool.[1][2] It was founded in 2013 by Professor Soumyen Bandyopadhyay, Giamila Quattrone, Martin Goffriller and Mohammad Habib Reza.[3]

ArCHIAM has a team of international researchers from various academic backgrounds, including architecture, archaeology, social history, ethnography, conservation and digital documentation. The centre's research has been funded by several organisations, including the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the British Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sultanate of Oman.

Activities[edit]

ArCHIAM has published several award-winning books, including "Manah: Omani Oasis, Arabian Legacy " (2011) and "Bahla Fort and Oasis: Documentation and Heritage Management Plan" (2014). The centre has hosted several international conferences, symposiums and exhibitions, including the "The Ecology of Ceramics in Architectural Heritage: Cross-Cultural Dynamics across the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and Regions Beyond" symposium in 2022. ArCHIAM's research has been used to inform policy and practice in the fields of heritage management and sustainable development.

Research Areas[edit]

ArCHIAM's research focuses on the built environment, its secular, vernacular and religious architecture and urbanism in the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian Subcontinent and North Africa. The centre's work is concerned with heritage management and sustainable development and strongly focuses on fieldwork and practice-based research.
