The 2022 Copa Sudamericana first stage was played from 8 to 17 March 2022.[1] A total of 32 teams competed in the first stage to decide 16 of the 32 places in the group stage of the 2022 Copa Sudamericana.[2]
The draw for the first stage was held on 20 December 2021, 12:00 PYST (UTC−3), at the CONMEBOL Convention Centre in Luque, Paraguay.[3][4] For the first stage, the 32 teams involved were divided into eight pots according to their national association.
The 32 teams were drawn into 16 ties, with the four teams from each national association being drawn against a rival from the same association in two ties per association and the first team drawn in each tie hosting the second leg.[5]
In the first stage, each tie was played on a home-and-away two-legged basis. If tied on aggregate, extra time was not played, and a penalty shoot-out was used to determine the winner (Regulations Article 2.4.2).[2]
The 16 winners of the first stage advanced to the group stage to join the 12 teams directly qualified for that stage (six from Argentina and six from Brazil), and four teams transferred from the Copa Libertadores (the four teams eliminated in the third stage of qualifying).

^9 de Octubre played their home match at Estadio Christian Benítez Betancourt, Guayaquil instead of their regular stadium Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer, Guayaquil.[19]
^Mushuc Runa played their home match at Estadio Bellavista, Ambato instead of their regular stadium Estadio COAC Mushuc Runa, Ambato, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^Nacional played their home match at Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asunción instead of their regular stadium Estadio Arsenio Erico, Asunción, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^Guaireña played their home match at Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asunción instead of their regular stadium Estadio Parque del Guairá, Villarrica, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^The Sol de América v General Caballero (JLM) match, originally scheduled for 9 March 2022, 19:15 local time was rescheduled to 8 March 2022, 19:15 local time.[23]
^Sol de América played their home match at Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asunción instead of their regular stadium Estadio Luis Alfonso Giagni, Villa Elisa.
^The General Caballero (JLM) v Sol de América match, originally scheduled for 16 March 2022, 19:15 local time was rescheduled to 15 March 2022, 19:15 local time.[23]
^General Caballero (JLM) played their home match at Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asunción instead of their regular stadium Estadio Ka'arendy, Dr. Juan León Mallorquín, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^Ayacucho played their home match at Estadio Huancayo, Huancayo instead of their regular stadium Estadio Ciudad de Cumaná, Ayacucho, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^Sport Boys played their home match at Estadio Nacional, Lima instead of their regular stadium Estadio Miguel Grau, Callao.[26]
^Cerro Largo played their home match at Estadio Centenario, Montevideo instead of their regular stadium Estadio Arquitecto Antonio Eleuterio Ubilla, Melo, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^Liverpool played their home match at Estadio Centenario, Montevideo instead of their regular stadium Estadio Belvedere, Montevideo, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.
^River Plate played their home match at Estadio Centenario, Montevideo (originally scheduled at Parque Alfredo Víctor Viera, Montevideo) instead of their regular stadium Parque Federico Omar Saroldi, Montevideo, which did not meet CONMEBOL requirements.[12]
