Saint Serf

I notice that Saint Serf is said to have been a Pope yet he does not appear in the official Vatican last of Popes nor in the Wikipedia list of Popes. Furthermore it is stated that he "served" for 7 years and then went elsewhere. It is not usual for a Pope to give up his office.

Is it possible that this is just part of the confusing legend that surrounds Sait Serf's life ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.49.32.97 (talk) 08:53, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

It is not uncommon for someone to be entitled as 'Pope' because of the work and saintliness he lead and did.... Saint Athanasius of Alexandria was, and is to this day known as such... ... MacOfJesus (talk) 06:58, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Questions regarding saints and others

Sorry, not being Catholic myself I would appreciate some clarifications on the following questions:

  1. Do Servants of God and Venerables have official feast days? From quick parsings of google results it seems like only Blesseds and Saints have these (but I could mistaken).
  2. Are there official or verifiable sources for the "attributes" of saints, blesseds, etc, specifically for filling in the "attributes" parameter in the saints infobox?
  3. Is it correct to say that all of these groups (Servants of God, Venerables, Blesseds, Saints) are venerated, or is it just a subset (eg, only Blessed and Saints)?

Thanks. --FyzixFighter (talk) 14:56, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Native names

I am wondering if there is any established convention as to whether saints’ native names or anglicised versions should be used. I understand that the common English name with established usage should be used, but in such areas where a saint has little English-language coverage, what is the protocol. For example, I recently created the page for the Italian Saint John of Tufara, having translated the name. However, as very few English sources reference him, is it better to use his native name of Giovanni. Clarification would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Vesuvio14 (talk) 13:28, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene vs. Cajetan

In keeping with the above item: just noticed that this change was made a little over a year ago. I think it most unfortunate, as Cajetan is clearly the most common name, certainly in English usage. This obviously requires a user looking for Cajetan to be redirected to someone who could just as well be taken for an Italian actor, skier, or race car driver. For Pete's sake, it says in the first sentence "known as Saint Cajetan". Manannan67 (talk) 04:57, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Saint Molaga and Saint Modomnoc

Hi all, I'm not very familiar with this Wikiproject so if there's an FAQ or other resource I should have consulted before posting here, my apologies! I have several questions.

I (largely) wrote the article Timoleague Friary, and in the process noticed that there is no article for the abbey's founder, Saint Molaga, also known as Molaga of the Bees. I was about to create one, when I came across the Wikipedia article for Saint Modomnoc, which seems to imply that the two saints are one and the same, and, indeed, credits Modomnoc with having founded the abbey in Timoleague (none of the many sources I read while researching the Timoleague Friary article mentioned Modomnoc). I haven't been able to confirm that they're different people, though I strongly suspect that they are not.

My first question is: Can anyone here either confirm whether these two saints are the same person or not? Or if not, point me in the direction of finding out?

Question two: Where can I find more information about early saints? There doesn't seem to be much at all written about Molaga as far as I can find, though I suspect that while their may not be a wealth of information, there is more to be found somewhere.

Question three: If I do write the article, what is the typical naming procedure? Molaga, Saint Molaga, St Molaga, Molaga of the Bees?

Thanks in advance! Xx78900 (talk) 20:29, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

I have found that the sources crediting Modomnoc are incorrect.Xx78900 (talk) 16:19, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

General question about veneration and infoboxes

Greetings, Saints aficionados! I have a general question about the veneration which we list in saints infoboxes. Now, commonly we acknowledge veneration by mainline communions such as Roman/Eastern Catholic, Oriental/Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, etc. In general we require sources or at least verifiability for the facts of their veneration if these may be contentious.

However, Infoboxes contain small fields for succinct info-at-a-glance, and they are not designed as exhaustive lists of all relevant facts. There are many dozens of splinter sects and denominations, such as Independent/Old Catholic, Old Believers, True Orthodox, and just all sorts of churches and communions that may venerate saints in similar ways to the mainstream ones we know. For example, Apostolic Catholic Church (Philippines) allegedly venerates all saints in common with Catholics, but this is a barely-notable, minor regional communion.

Should we be striving to include all relevant communions in the infobox under veneration lists, or should we limit the list to major and notable points? This would not preclude mention in the article prose, as long as relevant WP:RS such as a calendar or martyrology, are available for verifiability. Elizium23 (talk) 13:03, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Categorisation

Category:Christian saints states: Individuals who are recognized only by one or more of the subsidiary church groupings or individual churches will be included in those subcategories below. So... even if someone has only been recognised by 1 denomination as a "saint", but not all the other churches in the world, we get to categorise them as a "saint"? How representative is the label "Christian" in the phrase "Christian saint" then? That 1 denomination recognising person X as a saint can hardly be representative of the entire religion, can it? article names - saint title or not?

hello, forgive me if this has been resolved before. i've noticed an inconsistency in the naming of saint biography articles, that is, many have the title "saint" in the name, and many don't. an example is Ia of Cornwall vs Saint Endelienta. both are of similar notability & aren't really known for anything other than being saints & place namesakes. is there any kind of criteria for this? or is it pretty much arbitrary? same question with regard to including "of [location]" on the end. thanks! Sawyer-mcdonell (talk) 03:07, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

It only appears "inconsistent". See MOS:SAINTS. For locations see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people)#"X of Y" format. Manannan67 (talk) 04:13, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Pontian (Pope of Rome)

This is the only Pope whose article isn't named in the format "Pope name". Is that intentional? Colonies Chris (talk) 20:46, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

@Colonies Chris: Looks like an undiscussed move back on 11/Oct/23 with the rationale to align with MOS standards regarding article titles. However, MOS:POPES notes that articles on popes are an exception to the general article naming rule. Changing that exception should precede article moves like this, imo. I've undone the move accordingly. --FyzixFighter (talk) 22:20, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
