X apylinkių Eldership[edit]
What should the naming scheme for these elderships be? What is better: Garliava Rural Eldership or Garliava Eldership (rural)? Third option? @Radom1967 and Renata3: pinging you for a comment. —Alalch E. 23:17, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- I dont know there is no good translation. "apylinkė" translates to "neighborhood" in english. There is usually main county in center and surounding county. Maybe just name it "Garliava Eldership" Radom1967 (talk) 23:58, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Garliava Eldership is not the same eldership as "Garliava Rural Eldership". These are two elderships. So, no. —Alalch E. 01:17, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
- "Apylinkė" is a weird word without direct translation. It can be translated as "area, surroundings, vicinity". I prefer "Garliava Rural Eldership" as it describes exactly what "apylinkė" is trying to accomplish: eldership for the rural area around the town/city but does not include the town/city itself. I don't like Garliava Eldership (rural) as the disambiguator should be fully in the title (as in Lithuanian original). I don't know if there were any English translations by Statistics Department that we could piggyback on. Renata•3 01:24, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
- The problem with "X Rural Eldership" is the implication that there is such a thing as a "Rural Eldership", but all elderships are just elderships, they are not differentiated in any way. There is no similarity to rural district and urban district. There's just "district" (eldership). The "apylinkių" part should somehow attach to the placename part of the name, not to the word "eldership" to avoid this. "X Area Eldership" could be the least bad option. —Alalch E. 01:36, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

- Assuming you couldn't find any WP:RS with English translations, I suggest "Garliava Area Eldership" or perhaps "Garliava District Eldership". I also agree that "rural eldership" is a poor name: it neither reflects the literal meaning of "apylinkės" well nor it exists as a distinct type of administrative unit. -- Mindaur (talk) 10:42, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
- I can not determine from any WP:RS that any form is preferred. The Šiauliai TIC website says "Kuršėnai rural eldership" once. I wouldn't say that that matters. Let's agree on "X Area Eldership". According to that, we would have Garliava Eldership and Garliava Area Eldership.—Alalch E. 17:26, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
