Pronunciation

I've been quite active in recording pronunciation files for various article titles, such as Joseph Stalin, Stockholm and Iraq. I wouldn't mind setting up some bare-bones guidelines for this. For the most part to avoid people from a) cluttering up leads beyond repair and b) quelching pointless meta-debates (and meta-articles) over what the proper pronunciation of any given term or name might be before they ever break out. Here's a first draft for guidelines:

• If the native rendition of the word or term to be pronounced is identical in English, link directly from the bolded title in the lead. Otherwise, link from the native rendition.
• Make pronunciation files only of non-English words, terms and names. Pronunciation files in English are generally not necessary and should be supplanted by transcriptions in IPA or some other transcription system.
• Limit the pronunciations to encompass fairly notable articles.
• Unless no other option exists, pronunciation files should be recorded by native speakers. When recording a pronunciation file as a non-native, make sure you either have a knack for imitating accents or a good knowledge of the phonology of the language. Both are recommended.
• Recordings should be rendered in the appropriate national prestige dialect. "Non-neutral" local or regional dialects should be avoided when pronuncing titles that are of national relevance. For example, a distinct Jutland-acccent is not recommended when recording København (Copenhagen), Odense and Århus. This does not apply when recording names of dialects of any national language.
• When recording, attempt to make a reasonable compromise between colloquial sound reduction and clarity; slurring a city name beyond recognition is not useful, but neither is a pronunciation that sounds though it was part of a theatrical declamation. A good idea is to listen to how the name or term is pronounced on national TV- or radio news.

sound links

I really don't like the system of sound links currently. I think it would be best if we could just put as a link to media in articles, with no text-- but this seems to be impossible currently. Thanks for the help, --Urthogie 15:31, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Requesting template requesting sound

I think we should have a {{reqsound}} template comparable to the present {{reqphoto}}. I think that would raise awareness of this project drastically, and hopefully also participation in it. __meco 17:00, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Question

Pretty quiet around here, but this seems like the best place to ask. I've been considering paying native speakers of a certain language to record batches of pronunciation files. As part of the deal, they would agree to release the recording under the GFDL and/or CC-by-sa. Are there particular issues that might arise with this? Does it seem, in general, like a good or bad idea? -- Visviva 07:11, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

This would be better off to the Spoken Wikipedia Project, but I'm going to answer here. I think it sounds like a good idea, and I don't think it would violate any copyrights, as the audio files are to be released under GFDL.--Orthologist 17:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Is there some sort of analogue to the {{reqphoto}} template for articles that could benefit from an audio sample? For example, wolf-whistling can really only adequately be explained with a sound example. Pimlottc 17:02, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Oops, I saw this several days ago and saw that no one was doing anything with it, so I started Wikipedia:Requested recordings. I figure Requested audio could be a subset of this, in some way. My idea is that that page will act in a certain way like Wikipedia:Requested pictures, connecting people with skills, resources, and the correct geographic location, with articles which need examples. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. What about Wikipedia:Requested sounds???

I strongly believe that reviving the sound requests page is one of the most important steps in order to raise awareness to the use of sounds in Wikipedia. I think that page is inactive because no one knows about it! There are no links to it anywhere, so how could it become as popular as Requested images or others? (FYI, the only reason I was able to find it was because I thought requesting the sound of a flea jumping would be as easy as requesting an image, but I could only get there through Google.)

If I wanted to promote interest in sounds for Wikipedia, I would definitely promote a way for users to actually get the sounds they want! Sounds obvious to me, at least... I'd undoubtedly be thankful if this became a reality. Kreachure 16:07, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

P.S. I'm sure you know that Wikipedia:Requested recordings is strongly focused on classical music and musical instrument sounds only.

Categorising

Are there any guidelines for categorising sound files? (in particular prononciations) All I've found doing a category search is Category:Wikipedia_sounds. It'd be cool if all pronounciation files were categorised by language, for example. I'm willing to help do it, I just want to make sure there isn't already a category for it. --Dandin1 23:55, 2 June 2007 (UTC) Right, I forgot about commons.
