Articles on literature part of Project Feminism?

Two questions from a concerned reader

  • Why is there no page for criticism of feminism? Considering that there are criticism pages for other prominent ideologies, like Criticism of capitalism, it seems no sense for feminism to get a free pass, especially since various sources have critiqued feminism (especially third-wave feminism) as being sexist towards men, missing the point, or engaging in harassment etc. I'm sure an article can be made that is both WP:NPOV and outline criticisms by prominent notable scholars of feminism. Was this article deleted , or was it never created? Is this project fundamentally opposed to criticism of feminism's existence? Would you guys support the creation of such a page by me as long as everything is sourced to reliable sources?
  • Is there some sort of oversight for this Wikiproject? Only allowing feminists to join this project doesn't seem to work very well with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. I personally think there is quite heavy bias on Wikipedia's Feminist-related articles to a pro-feminist stance and sources that oppose or do not agree with feminism or other social justice ideology gets routinely silenced; I'll be honest though, I do not like feminism very much and may be blinded by my own biases so would be happy to be proven wrong. This problem is made significantly worse by the fact that Wikipedia has all but endorsed feminism with projects like "Women in Red", which is basically a feminist project workforce dedicated to pushing feminist content into articles. This is quite irresponsible for the world's sixth largest website especially as it shouldn't endorse any type of political view, and hasn't in the past. I'm all for free speech and the rights of feminists to advance their ideologies but this is Wikipedia, where all views should be respected, so I think it would be better if this Wikiproject allows people who do not like or are opposed to feminism to join and edit as well as long as they stay respectful and constructive. Is there any type of oversight for WikiProject Feminism and Women in Red to ensure these projects treat liberal (generally pro-feminist) and conservative (generally anti-feminist) sources equally and don't start POVPUSH-ing their own agenda, especially as this is already happening imo?

Help with an article?

I'm going to be posting this in several different areas, but I was wondering if anyone could help out with the draft Draft:Rape joke. I think that this could be independently notable outside of rape culture, but the draft needs a lot of work and it'd stand a better chance of holding up to scrutiny (since let's face it, this would get a ton of scrutiny once it was accepted) if we had multiple editors working on it. Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

Wikimedia Sweden image project

Hi, everyone.

Wikimedia Sweden recently finished an image project. The goal has been to produce photos of volunteer models illustrating underwear and human bodies that are not stereotypically while, male, slim, etc. I got the idea for the project after I noticed the almost complete lack of non-sexist imagery of women's bodies at Commons. I was project coordinator during the initial phases and Sara Mörtsell at Wikimedia Sweden has been the project manager. Ina Bäckström handled media coordination in the startup phase and User:Josve05a has assisted with technical know-how on Commons. The project was funded as part of a grant from the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society. We hired Tomas Gunnarsson, a well known feminist and gender rights activist in Sweden, as our photographer. Everyone of us participated with input or selection of models.

The images that have come out of the project can be found in the Commons category Category:Uploaded via Campaign:Normprojekt. We tried our best to find as varied models as possible in terms of gender identity, race, age and body type. In the linked category there are 125 photos of six models of various colors, ages and shapes. All of them are volunteers that have agreed to the terms and conditions involved in having photos of themselves published under a free license.

Everyone who's been active in the project is hoping these images can be used to diversify our illustrations of human bodies on Wikipedia. I've already included a few of the images in articles like foot, fist and sports bra. Please feel free to spread them wherever you feel they are relevant.

Australian women researchers

FYI, there seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding at ANI, over a group who made a push to develop a range of articles on female Australian scientists (with mixed success). Menstrual Technology page with focus on technologists

I have noticed that on the project requested articles page there's at least 2 dozen menstrual technologists. Perhaps instead of waiting for an individual article to be created for each, they can have a section on a Menstrual technology page. Curious

There appears to be a bit of a conflict regarding the struggle to combat gender bias and some of the actions WP indirectly rewards by publishing and/or recognizing material from mysoginistic countries. Are we not in essence acknowledging/perpetuating/advancing mysoginistic causes, and by doing so, ignoring the very biases this project is struggling to overcome? I'm curious to know the project's position and what we can hope to achieve in the gender bias struggle if we're validating information as "encyclopedic" knowing it originates from such countries. Visualization of Gender Focus on Wikipedia

Domestic violence in same-sex relationships

Hello, I have been working on creating and improving the article Domestic violence in same-sex relationships and I was wondering if that article would fit under this project's scope of interest. I know the topic of Domestic violence more generally is of feminist interest, and I thought that this was a natural extension of how domestic violence affects people in same-sex relationships. I would really appreciate an article rating, and possibly marking it of some level of interest to the project page. Malleus Maleficarum

Hi. I have made major improvements to Malleus Maleficarum. However some people disrupt the progress from the beginning and recently they have blocked the development and reinstated lots of nonsense. They are pov pushers and people unfamiliar with the topic may not recognize that because they distort sources, misrepresent them, often giving wrong impression simply by out-of-context statements or by omission of details. Multilingual Women's History Month in March

  • There has been a discussion on the WiR talk page about embarking on a multilingual approach to Women in Red in March. The general idea is that we should follow in the footsteps of Wikipedia Asian Month by encouraging other language versions of Wikipedia to participate in our editathon. It has been suggested that we could start with some of the European languages with Latin alphabets which have proved successful in WAM but we could also think of including other important language versions such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian. For each language version we will need at least one coordinator to translate the invitations and support pages and to provide assistance to participants. We welcome any ideas on how we should proceed as well as any offers of support for other languages. The topics of Activists and Feminists appear suitable for all the languages but it might be useful to extend our scope to attract users interested in creating articles on women active in other areas. Patrica Carbine

Patrica Carbine founding publisher of Ms, Magizine does not have a a Wikipedia page. I am a little bias because she is my Aunt. Aunt Pat was also Managing Editor of Look Magazine during the 1960's. She is also instrumental in engaging Madison Avenue in marketing large purchases such as cars directly to women. After listening to report on NPR concerning the Editathon, I thought she should have a biography. Fifth-wave feminism article

Can other editors take a look at the Fifth-wave feminism article to confirm if this is a term widely used? The original reference quality and framing of the concept done by a paid editor Ethanbas who also is opposed to a Feminism expert taking a look at the article raises some flags and I'd appreciate others more well-versed in the topic to take a look. I was not paid to create the article. I am also not opposed to anyone improving my article, I just don't see what an "expert in feminism" could contribute to the article, since it is *not* a widely used term, so there's very little that can be added. Ethanbas (talk) 22:55, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

I think that a fifth-wave feminist page should not exist. It was only a little over a year ago that a fourth-wave feminism article was created on wikipedia. And there does seem to be many academics talking about that subject (2.5k versus 340 hits on google scholar). The concept on the book article is enough, imo.Fred (talk) 16:00, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

"Feminist Stripper" page.

This article shouldn't exist inasmuch there is no need for an article on feminist chefs. Or for the same reason there is no article for a vegetarian stripper. The beginning summary of the subject is made up of theoretical ideas and conjecture. The "Benefits" summary is an opinion. Among many similar phrases, "Feminist strippers receive a sense of empowerment from performing for an audience on stage" is like saying "Soldiers feel warmth in their hearts when they fight for their country", not only is it questionable and biased, it is mere propaganda. The rest of the article is based upon loosely related and ambiguous, completely non factual thoughts. This article shouldn't exist not for oxymoronic reasons, but rather superfluous ones. While there may be a stripper who believes in women's rights and empowerment, the phenomenon - wether plentiful or scarce cannot exist intrinsically - as it implies the regular stripper as non-feminist. Gender Equality

Hi all, I've decided to start doing what I can to spruce up some of the articles that need edits and rewrites, etc. Gender equality is listed as one of those pieces. I'm cleaning up the links right now but honestly, the whole article is a bit of a mess. I'm not sure if the references are even referring to half the sentences they're attached to. It also appears that the page is a frequent target of edits for class projects. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but it could definitely explain the sheer volume of information in that page. Also, the page says it will not discuss genders other than male and female, which as a feminist I think is a bit of an issue.

Basically, the article needs a big rework, and I'm currently avoiding diving into that by fiddling with references, but if anyone would like to make a project out of this with me I could be coaxed into doing a bigger overhaul :) HelloStarling (talk) 13:59, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Sexual Violence topics

Page watchers and editors requested for Duke Lacrosse Case (and Campus Sexual Assault) which are clearly not NPOV. The Duke page claims the case was a false accusation in the very first sentence and throughout, and that cannot be proven and, indeed, is disputed. Beauxlieux (talk) 02:41, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

I've been editing the Duke lacrosse case article and related pages for nearly ten years and fought with several editors over the POV, which used to include gross WP:BLP violations against the accuser. The articles, though far from perfect, are much better than they were -- but I agree that they would benefit from more eyes.
I don't live near North Carolina, nor do I have any association with Duke, so I'm not always aware of the latest news related to the case and its people. I'm curious, though: what reliable sources dispute that it was a false accusation of rape? — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 05:11, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

I am that editor. As my user page indicates, I use this account when I edit using my phone.
The edit I reverted made many more changes than just removing the word "false", although I would have reverted it even if that was all it changed.
NPOV doesn't mean that we report every theory with equal weight. See WP:WEIGHT. I'll look into the source you mention, but as far as I can tell, the overwhelming majority of reliable sources say that the accusations were false. If I'm mistaken, or if consensus is changing regarding the incident or the accusations, we should cite reliable sources and change the article.

Unfortunately, upon further review, not unsurprisingly, the wikipedia entry for the book does not have NPOV either. It refutes the book without giving the author's perspective, summed up in the Cosmo interview which is that he believes something happened: the police, nurse, and D.A. all believed her. The book got many positive reviews from reputable news sources. We need to be neutral in describing the allegation. Beauxlieux (talk) 00:47, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
That's one of the shittiest Wikipedia articles I've seen in a while, but I can't say I'm surprised. (I particularly like the original research about the comments left on Amazon and other websites.) Just about every article related to the case was a POV (and BLP) mess before I got involved. (I'm not claiming that they're perfect now, because they're not, but they're much, much better than they were.)
I'll have to get a copy of Cohan's book and read it, and also read some of the reviews. In the meantime, if you've got a copy and want to edit the Duke article based on the book, I'll try to support your changes. — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 11:28, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Adella Hunt Logan

I am wondering if participants of this project see this person, Adella Hunt Logan, as qualifying for a stand-alone article. She seems to be a minor player in the suffrage movement and did not gather a lot of notice in her time. While it may be true she was not well-known in her lifetime, she meets GNG without question, with two Oxford University Press references. As the matriarch of a prominent family, she is also referenced in a separate WP article, Logan family (historical), but her well-documented activism, educational and health advocacy, and suffrage work make her deserving of a separate article, in my opinion. Portrayal of women in film

I put in a request for an article Portrayal of women in film (or similar). It would be very interesting to have an article that covered portrayal of female characters in the history of cinema, sourced from film critics and gender studies academics. At present there is nothing on Wikipedia that addresses this topic, with the sole exception of Portrayal of women in film noir - which is obviously quite limited in scope to one particular genre. I think it would add much to Wikipedia. There is Women in film but this seems to focus on women in production (directors, screenwriters, actors etc) but not on the actual Cultural depictions of women. A comparable article to my suggestion is Portrayal of women in American comics. Does anyone feel they could contribute? Cnbrb (talk) 11:02, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Off wiki workshops in existing Feminist forums in Shanghai

Hello. I'm Elliott and this is my user page on English Wikipedia. This morning I am going to get breakfast with a friend and public speaker, who organizes and hosts feminist discussion forums in Shanghai, China. Our purpose is to discuss the inclusion of Wikipeida workshops at future events, to cover topics such as:

  • A general outline of the gender gap issue
  • How to find articles in need of attention or creation
  • How to create an account
  • Some info on Wikipedia policy and guidelines

The purpose of the workshop will be a hands-on exercise in which the group will be provided with a quantity of source material and a new article will be created during (not after) the workshop, to highlight the immediacy of effort contributed to he project. It is my hope that the workshop will result in the creation of new accounts and the addition of female Chinese editors who contribute regularly to the project. I'm opening this thread to get some help and feed back and also welcome the opening of a discussion of this subject on the talk page of my English Wikipedia user page. Many thanks! Pubic hair

I started a discussion on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page because I am concerned about the bias (and said so). I am asking for input from this project on the talk page. Here is what I posted:

Exactly how many photos of pubic hair are needed? If an image is lacking pubic hair, is that relevant? You usually don't illustrate a part of a person's anatomy by showing its absence. Also I am blaming implicit bias here but there is one photo of a man's pubic hair and five photos of a woman's pubic hair. Their are no images of axillary hair. There are five images of no pubic hair.
Facial hair contains no images of the absence of facial hair. Eyebrows contains no images of the absence of eyebrows.

@Barbara (WVS): This is a rather widespread issue on the wiki project. (White, able-bodied, cis) women's bodies are used to illustrate many sexual concepts. Pubic hair is a good example. Others are Naturism, nipple, Exhibitionism, and most fetish/philia pages. EvergreenFir (talk) 01:24, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
When I bring it up, I'm accused of all sorts of things. How can this bias be handled? Since it is so obvious, can this be brought up to arbcom? Barbara, you could open an RfC and ask for consensus to add something like the following (copied in part from Wikipedia:Writing about women) to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images: "Avoid images that objectify women. In particular, do not use pornography images in articles that are not about pornography. Except when the topic is necessarily tied to it (examples: downblouse and upskirt), avoid examples of male-gaze imagery, where women are presented as objects of heterosexual male appreciation. When adding an image of part of a woman's body, consider cropping the image to focus on that body part. Do not add images of women's bodies gratuitously. First post

I am a seventy six year old woman and I have experience a few incidents of near sexual abuse. Their was no intercourse involved in any od them. Each incident happened before I reach age 12, perhaps because I lived in a very sexually unaware society, where men were men and women were their servants or slaves. I know that things are very different now but the effect of the abusive stuff is the same.

This happened three times, two of them involved being tied to trees by teen age boys and then "felt up". This occurred regularly for some weeks at school before the teachers finally caught on to what was happening and put a stop to it. It was difficult for us to get them to listen. The general view of the teachers was that we were making it up.

The second incident happened at my parents friend's farm. Their teen age boys would take us out to see the horses, but while there, they would take turns holding us down while the others would fondle and touch us everywhere. My parents couldn't believe our stories and were very upset that we could say such things. Finally we refused to go there any more and my parents respected that decision.

Finally I was at a public park with my four year old sister and my Mother. There was a wading pool there and Mom sent us to play there, putting me, age eight, in charge. A man approached us and seemed friendly. He invited us to go up the hill away from the park and on the way he started touching my sister and I. I was immediately suspicious and grabbed her hand and started back. He did not chase us, so it ended and we didn't mention it to my Mom.

I realize that these incidents are so very minor in terms of sexual abuse, but their affect on my life has been quite profound. They are never far from my mind and certainly gave me some pretty warped views about men's relationship to women. It has taken years to correct my ideas. Some things are still off.

I promised you one more story, this is an upper. I got on the bus and sat down beside a man. I think I was about age eight or nine. I was not uncomfortable on the but by myself. After a few minutes the man unzipped his pants and started stroking his penis. I noticed this, decided I needed to do something and went to the bus driver. I told him what the man was doing. The driver invited me to sit beside him instead and I did. We drove on and then he stopped. He announced, "Police Station." then got up , went to the man and hauled him off the bus and into the station. When he came out he was alone and grinning. He told me that the police would now take care of that bad man and said I had been very smart to tell him.

This event has never left me. I was very proud of having handled this difficult situation and the praise I got from the driver. It started out poorly, but ended uo just fine. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Wiki Women in Red - a proposed User Group

Having worked for 2 years editing articles for Women In Red, a group of organizers have concluded that sourcing is one of the biggest hurdles in creating articles on women and non-binary genders. Though it is true that a lot of sourcing simply doesn’t exist, it is also true that there are sources, but we have no access to them. As these groups did not typically become subjects for academic study until the 1970s, many of the sources are not on line or are behind paywalls. Failure to include women and non-binary people in the encyclopedia presents a one-dimensional view of society and history. To address those issues, we are forming a new User Group aimed at referencing and support for like-minded groups and would appreciate your input or input from your supporters in our organizational process. The WikiJournal of Humanities is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's humanities, arts and social sciences content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap. It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group along with Wiki.J.Med and Wiki.J.Sci. The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Requesting urgent help

Hi,

Just a while ago I completed my second article on Wikipedia namely Aurat_March - a Women's Day related article. while I was amidst to make correction and review request on various Wikipedia women projects. Some one has placed speedy deletion notice on the article for perceived copyright issue.

While most of the places I have tried to write in my own language, some of the third person statements reported by news portals may still need little corrections. While personally I do not think that is a serious copyright issue which can not be dealt with little more paraphrasing. But frankly I do not know how to deal with situation. Please help me either in necessary update or help me in transferring it to my sandbox page.

Men's studies: feedback needed

Can I get some feedback on whether the Men's studies article should be considered part of this WikiProject? To me, it seems like it should be:

Men's studies...is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to topics concerning men, masculinity, feminism...

It draws upon feminist theory in order to analyze different ideologies having to do with masculinity

men's studies programs and courses often include contemporary discussions of men's rights, feminist theory, queer theory, matriarchy, patriarchy...They often discuss the issues surrounding male privilege

Honestly @WanderingWanda:, i think it's more the purview of WP:Gender Studies, but i see you've posted there as well. I am confused what you are asking here. These aspects are in the article, are you saying it should be in the lede? Regarding your other request on the masculinism article, I agree spell it with an n, keep the other as redirect. Seems a bit controversial. I'm not asking if the article's text should be changed, no. Let me back up. I added the Feminism sidebar to the article because, based on how the article presented the subject of Men's studies, it seemed like feminism was a primary focus of the article. (I put the template alongside the Masculinism sidebar, which was already present in the article.) The Feminism sidebar was taken down by an editor who thought it didn't belong there. I'm now asking for guidance from this project about whether the article should have the Feminism sidebar (and/or a WikiProject Feminism template on the talk page.) Sexual assaults covered up

I consider this as a meta-issue and find it appropriate to discuss. Currently, I am in a discussion at Talk:Neymar. But that's not my issue here, RFC is the place to go for that. My problem is that why are these types of issues getting covered up so often? Certainly a sexual assault allegation is not the same as a football transfer rumor, isn't it? Maybe this is a result of gender gap of registered users? I am up for open discussions. Interested articles are also up at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost, the latest edition. @ImmortalWizard: It's not clear what Signpost article in particular you are referencing, and it's not clear what the evidence is that this is a systemic problem rather than a particular content dispute you happen to be involved in. The answer you were given when you posted the same thread to the Teahouse was a fairly good one. Specifically, edits like this are wholly inappropriate under our standards for biographies of living people, and continuing to make such edits will likely result in sanctions.
Given that you have now posted this exact thread in at least three different places, that this thread clearly begs a question with regard to your content dispute, and that you are clearly pointing others to the same dispute, you should be cautioned that you may be giving the appearance that you are trying to canvass sympathetic editors to your ongoing dispute. Missing article: Latina feminism

I've been working on some Latino articles, and noticed a gap in coverage: we don't have an article on Latina feminism. This topic is what it says: feminism among Latinas, primarily in the United States. The two articles that are closest, do not cover this topic, although one overlaps it. Chicana feminism overlaps it, but is only part of the story. Feminism in Latin America is not the same topic, although there is probably some intellectual cross-pollination back and forth. It might start with Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera, and could include María Lugones, Ofelia Schutte, Linda Alcoff, and Mariana Ortega. This might be a good jumping-off point:

Unreadable sentence on Gender Studies page

Somebody please, please, rewrite this sentence from Gender studies. It makes no sense to the vast majority of readers and it seems to be plagiarism of terms from some writers. If no one can figure out what this means and rewrite it, it will have to go.

Feminist anthem might be more appropriate than List of feminist anthems, but I think it is neutrally written and well-sourced. I have no idea how to improve it. Requesting to add women's rights issue article Aurat March to your 'watch list' during week of International Women's Day .

While I am steadily working on article to improve further as suggested in notification template. Article is coming across repeat anon vandalism of intentional misogynistic hate against women's movement plus some un-sourced original research attacks.

It seems to be , being women's day around I worry this vandalism may get repeated.

Transnational Psychology Page

Hello all!

I am working on a project for a Transnational Feminism Gender Studies course and am looking for some advice/approval on my proposed edits. My goal is to create a page for Transnational Psychology (as it does not yet exist) and add links to the page from other related topics. As I am new to editing on Wikipedia, is there a standard protocol for removing sections entirely from one page once its stand-alone page is up and the original becomes redundant?
