Leaflet for Wikiproject Anthropology at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Categories: why "Human biology" and "Human geography" are next to "Anthropology" under "Social sciences"?

Maybe I misunderstand what anthropology is about, but is this correct way of categorization:

  • I dont think any of those categorizations work. I dont think many people consider human biology to be a social science. And Human genetics is definitely not a subfield of biological anthropology. Human geography is an inter sectional field between anthropology and geography so it could go under either - but probably makes more sense under geography.User:Maunus ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:24, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Homo tsaichangensis - new article to keep an eye on

Homo tsaichangensis, more widely known as Penghu 1, an apparently new species of Homo, described and named (apparently concurrently but by different authors) in the last few days. --Animalparty-- (talk) 07:58, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

As far as I can see there is very little reason that jaw couldn't fit within Asian Homo erectus. It is ridiculous how quick people are to name any tiny fossil a new species without any substantial anatomical evidence for doing so. thanks for bringing the article to our attention.User:Maunus ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 00:31, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

History and founders of Anthropology

I am participating in a discussion at Talk:Anthropology regarding how best to describe the early history of the discipline including its founding figures and the relation between the various subdisciplines, and the conceptual history of the term "anthropology". Presentations and pluralisations of peoples

The following OP has been multiply posted and my suggestion is that Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (ethnicities and tribes) might act as a centralised location for related discussion.

Use of the pluralisation of a demonym where this is possible

A recent successful RM was made for the following:

As per: Albanians, Americans, Armenians, Australians, Austrians, List of Bahranis, Belarusians, Bosnians, Brazilians, Bulgarians, Lists of Cameroonians and Canadians, ...
As per WP:UCRN as demonstrated in searches ...

Designations that seemingly should remain as "... people" as the demonym retains the same form when indicating either singulars or plurals: Bhutanese people, British people and Chinese people,


Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ethnicities and tribes)

On this basis I would suggest that any editor with authority to directly make sensible changes to article and category contents could go ahead and make sensible moves (as relevant to article content naturally).

I would say that this issue also relates to content in which two ethnicities are mentioned such that relating to Afghan American(s) and perhaps this will also need to be sorted out at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ethnicities and tribes).

I propose that the table on that project page might read as something like the following:

Use pluralisation of a demonym

"Man" infobox bias

The article about man has an infobox collage of male pictures, the selection of which seems bias and arbitrary. The editors prevent members from editing it without first suggesting it on the talk page, but a few editors seem to have final say and they favor pictures of men they personally favor for arbitrary reasons. I implore members of the WikiProject Anthropology to chime in on this topic, as I have suggested one image, perhaps a classic representation of man, be displayed. Genetic anthropology

Not sure what to make of this article. The lead says "Genetic anthropology (Human genetics) is a branch of human genetics" and then says it's a "field of anthropology." I removed an unsourced section which said:

"There seems to be a divide in the academic community as to what is Genetic Anthropology and what is Molecular Anthropology. There are many universities that offer degrees in Genetic Anthropology or Anthropological Genetics, while others offer degrees in Molecular Anthropology, but all are considered to be under the umbrella of Evolutionary Anthropology. In most universities genetic anthropology is taught in conjunction with other anthropological areas such as paleoanthropology, primatology, human biology, Bioarchaeology and osteology."

Hi, I am looking for support for a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Undersigned seeks your help specially to improve defenition and lead sections of the article.

Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations and dances around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

Semitic people merge discussion

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place, I do not know my way around Wikipedia and its protocols at all. I am alerting you to the fact that an article of interest to you (and you are marked as this article being relevant to you) is currently being debated for removal/merging. It is being argued (I believe wrongly) that the article is irrelevant and has no place in having its own page, so I do think someone from your group should keep an eye on the discussion on the talk page. They already merged the article today into another article without any discussion but I managed to get an admin to move it back again. Conversation has now started on the talk page and I think it is definitely something you will want to keep an eye on. Thankyou for the advice, appreciated. It seems some people are determined to merge this page elsewhere, I think to bury the information, also numerous small edits are being done now in an effort to make the material seem less and less relevant, I guess to support deleting/merging the material later. I have noticed that this article (which has been around for quite a few years with much effort put into it) is of particular interest of a large number of focus groups, so I do think it is important for it to be monitored. As the article stands and as far as I can tell, it is extremely factual and contains much useful information, it would be a shame for it to be eroded away and finally removed. As the subject matter is sensitive to some and can elicit emotional interpretations according to their own personal views, it is important the article remains un-biased, factual and complete and is not vandalized. Well... first, this page is part of a research project : m:Research:Wikipedia Primary School SSAJRP programme and as part of the project, this is one of the 100 or so pages that we hope to see improved in the course of the project. Now... whilst I was looking on the talk page at the assessments proposed by the wikiprojsects it is associated with, I saw important discrepancies (from start to C level). Not surprisingly so as many of the assessment were made a long time ago. Hence my request to review.
Now, any improvement to the article itself would be great as well :) Anthere (talk)

Proposed Merger of Cultural entomology and Ethnoentomology

I was thumbing through articles that needed work for WikiProject Insects and found that Cultural entomology has a (very old) proposed merge with Ethnoentomology. There are no comments on the Cultural entomology page, but one vote for and against merger at the Ethnoentomology page. Help expand an article?

Hi! I recently chose to redirect the article Postpartum confinement, as someone nominated it for deletion saying that it didn't expand on Postpartum_period#East_Asia. It looks like the section Postpartum_period#Cultures covers confinement, but I can see the merit in having a separate article that goes into this in greater detail across the various cultures and discussing this in more general detail on a cultural level.

Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

"Mongoloid" article and pictures of private persons

I posted this on the talk page of the Mongoloid article, about the use of photographs of private persons, whereas the article on Caucasian race only uses sketches and the article on White people only uses famous people. I was concerned about posting photos of private persons being objectifying, but before making any determinations, I would like to discuss the matter. WikiJournal of Science promotion

The WikiJournal of Science is a start-up academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's scientific content. It is part of a WikiJournal User Group that includes the flagship WikiJournal of Medicine.[1][2]. Like Wiki.J.Med, it intends to bridge the academia-Wikipedia gap by encouraging contributions by non-Wikipedians, and by putting content through peer review before integrating it into Wikipedia.

Since it is just starting out, it is looking for contributors in two main areas:

Editors

  • See submissions through external academic peer review
  • Format accepted articles
  • Promote the journal

Authors

  • Original articles on topics that don't yet have a Wikipedia page, or only a stub/start
  • Wikipedia articles that you are willing to see through external peer review (either solo or as in a group, process analagous to GA / FA review)
  • Image articles, based around an important medical image or summary diagram

User is using article space to push an unsourced personal POV that Filipino Datu are Monarchs

Hi. A user has been insisting on using the main article space of the Datu article to assert his/her point of view that these Filipino rulers are monarchs, and that the polities and social groupings they lead are monarchies. It's a topic that has had an impact on very many early Philippine history articles, and this "monarchist" POV has been pushed hard by numerous editors in numerous articles. Datu, I think, is the right place for a proper discussion. May I request people take a look, and add their five cents before I elevate this dispute any further? I feel that more voices are needed for this discussion to go anywhere. Eye_color#Blue needs a quick edit

"As of 2016, the earliest light-pigmented and blue-eyed remains of Homo Sapiens were found ..."

That obviously should read Homo sapiens.

Can somebody please fix that?

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

New essay on race and ethnicity

I've repurposed a well-received long thread post – on "race" and "ethnicity" as labels on Wikipedia and why they're generally a poor idea – and posted it to WP:Race and ethnicity. It's a "crash course" educational piece rather than the typical "do it this way not that way" Wikipedia essay. People may find it of interest. It doesn't address race from the Racial bias on Wikipedia angle, which is certainly a valid one, within the confines of race as a social construct and all the effects that has. Rather, it's an anti-racialism summary of why people's beliefs that "races" are a biological fact are confused and misleading. We shouldn't be "pegging" our article subjects with racialist labels, absent a strong personal or RS identification of the label with the subject.

PS: I haven't been in an anthro classroom in years and am not an academic subscribing to all the journals. Cultural anthropology / social anthropology / ethnology / ethnography

We have a four-way clarity problem.

  • Ethnology distinguishes between that discipline and all the others. It's quite good in that regard, but is still a stub, and probably deserves more attention, presumably from Continental Europeans who can describe their field well.
  • Social anthropology distinguishes between s.a. and c.a., but not ethnology, nor with ethnography (which it seems only mention as the adjective ethnographic).
  • Cultural anthropology distinguishes between c.a. and s.a., but not ethnology; worse, it seems to directly confuse ethnology with ethnography in parts, as I mentioned on the talk page there.
  • Ethnography barely mentions ethnology. It does have a section that clearly distinguishes ethnography from c.a. and s.a.

While I have a degree in the field, it's not fresh, I didn't study abroad, and I'm not a professional in it (I'm a tech consultant these days, and formerly a civil liberties activist), so I'm probably not in the best position to tease out these differences in encyclopedically sculpted wording. Hi, just to make you aware that we are looking to train students on the Global Health MSc at the University of Edinburgh how to edit Wikipedia on 26 October 2018 with a view to improving articles related to anthropology and global health on 30th October 2018. (Wanted to make you aware in case any issues cropped up with new editors requiring any assistance or support). I've just come across Australo-Melanesian which has been moved from Australoid race unilaterally and has seen a significant rewrite. I don't pretend to have strong views on the subject, but it feels wrong to be moving such a major article without consensus, and I can imagine that there's probably an article to be had on the historical aspects of "Australoid" regardless of modern terminology. WikiJournal of Humanities published first article

The WikiJournal of Humanities is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's humanities, arts and social sciences content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap. It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group along with Wiki.J.Med and Wiki.J.Sci. The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Utah Polygamy and Law Since 2000

I'm wondering if someone from this WikiProject could take a look at this article and assess it. It was created by a student editor as part of Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Brigham Young University/HIST 221 - Gonzales - The United States Since 1877 (Winter 2019), and student moved the article to the mainspace on their own without submitting it for WP:AFC review. There are some WP:MOS and other similar errors which can be cleaned up, but my main concerns are that it's a WP:CONTENTFORK which might not need it's own stand-alone article. I don't believe the university course this student created the article for has ended; so, it's possible that they are still going to get graded on their work; at the same time, it's been added to the mainspace which means that it probably shouldn't be left as is just because it's part of a student editing project. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Defining Epicanthic fold

From the history and talk page of Epicanthic fold, it seems that no one agrees on what the epicanthic fold actually is, with various images being added and deleted due to confusion. I've added a section to Eyelid at Eyelid#Anatomical variation with an image distinguishing a "single" and "double" eyelid, but I would not be able to distinguish between an epicanthic fold or lack of an epicanthic fold. Commons has images at Category:Epicanthic fold which may or may not actually be epicanthic folds, but could serve to illustrate when someone actually knows what they are. 93 (talk) 18:04, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
