I suggest you propose this only as an essay. Also, check the Manual of Style to see if it is already covered therein or can be adequately addressed with a paragraph therein. GRBerry 12:55, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I asked on IRC, and they said there was no simlar policy/guideline. AzaToth 12:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I've found Wikipedia:Navigational templates which is obviously highly relevant. It also says most of what needs to be said. Also relevant to what to include inside a navigation box is Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context. GRBerry 13:12, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, I forgot that, but's that just an HOWTO, it wont guide/force people how to create an nav box. AzaToth 13:34, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories versus navboxes[edit]

I'd like to see something which outlines the difference between a navbox and a category because at this point in time I am unclear. I did think we had guidance somewhere that they shouldn't replicate a category, but off the top of my head I can't recall where. Hiding Talk 12:58, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, forgot that :) AzaToth 12:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Examples of very large navboxes on very small articles[edit]

This one might take the cake. --0x845FED 17:54, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, not anymore. Comments invited. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:58, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose[edit]

I just wanted to say I oppose the inclusion this essay as an official WP guideline. Please sign below if you oppose it too. Thanks. Bravada, talk - 17:55, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since when is a recomendation to create a guideline an essay? I think you have missunderstand the purpouse of this page. There is no reason trying to "vote" on a proposal before it's finish AzaToth 18:14, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Let me reiterate - I do not agree with, or actually strictly oppose, what is on the project page at the moment becoming a WP guideline or policy. Or is it forbidden to do so? Bravada, talk - 21:10, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is ok to be in opposition. I am after all, in the very first edit to this page. It is inappropriate per WP:NOVOTE to request a vote, especially so early that the essay/proposal can't even be called complete. GRBerry 21:18, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did not request a vote. Bravada, talk - 22:36, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

condensed navigational templates[edit]

I recently created Template:Places in Bedfordshire for a user looking for comments on this version. The technique of making a navigational template that looks different on every page it's on seems like a generalizable method that might help the "huge navigation box" issue. I might take a stab at compressing some other templates in a similar fashion. Comments? -- Rick Block (talk) 02:34, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On the fence[edit]

I think the idea behind this guideline is good, since I've seen some navboxes that are way too large (as well as some that have no meaningful ordering other than alphabetical, which makes categories the better solution). However, I don't think there's a need for strict limits like "twenty items max". >Radiant< 16:02, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
