Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Joondalup/Goals

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What we're looking for: Wikipedia Takes Joondalup aims to do several things:

  • Capture significant features which may be useful in Wikipedia articles and/or in Commons image categories
  • Capture a day in the life of Joondalup
  • Give non-Wikipedians a bit of insight into what we do.

In a single day's work, with the street directory, some local knowledge and a lot of help from Google Street View, I've put together the following list. But looking to Fremantle's goals, they weren't restricted to buildings or stationery objects – there were deliberate attempts to capture life in the city, such as unfinished construction works, baristas making coffee, people reading the day's newspaper, and etc. I'd love people to get these sorts of items onto the lists.

Don't be afraid of adding more if your concern is solely that the lists are getting long. It'd be better to have a too long list to scratch less useful entries off than to have a less useful list to start with, and we can do all of that before the big day. Some of the entries (Lakeside and ECU come to mind) will naturally have sub-points - to add those, just use two asterisks (*'s) before the point instead of one to make it indent properly.

Last but not least, don't forget to play it safe. Don't put in targets which require trespassing on private property to obtain, or which are inherently dangerous. The Wanneroo research station, Tamala Park and the majority of the golf course are not open to the public but we can still get a useful shot without entering private land.

Also give some thought to what point values we can attach to each target so that people who go further out or try for harder-to-get ones are appropriately rewarded. Orderinchaos 20:02, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Lake Joondalup Reserve Yellagonga Regional Park (9486) - Yellagonga Regional Pk, Joondalup
Lake area and islands provide a habitat for diverse populations of waterbirds. Lake is fresh and is dominated by jointed twig rush and bordered by paperbark. The waters are densely populated with benthic stoneworts. Flooded gum is common in places around the lake. Many hundreds of waterbirds, of many species, use the lake as a summer drought refuge.
