This course will take deep dives into key events in Precambrian (prior to 542 million years ago) Earth history and the geological, geochemical, and modeling evidence supporting key theories. In particular, we'll focus on the earliest evidence of life, the initiation of plate tectonics, the rise of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere, and Snowball Earth glaciations. Students will engage with these topics through reading and discussing primary literature, hands-on modeling and data analysis exercises, and writing assignments to synthesize information from various sources.
