Women in American Film, MCA 331, explores an expansive range of women working in creative roles in the American film industry. The course is taught from the perspective of the filmmaker and focuses on the creative process: the filmmaker’s vision and story, how she/they created it, the business environment in which the film was created, legacies of respect among women working in film. The course material includes writer/directors, producers, actors-turned-producers, and women in key creative roles such as cinematographer, screenwriter, and editor. Much of the material is mainstream fiction film, however we will also discuss documentary, animated, and experimental films.

This is more of a contemporary studies and “future” class than a history class, however we can only understand the future potential by looking at historical precedent. Women In American Film is designed for students who intend to go into careers in film and media, and we look at film history, contemporary film, and emerging trends and initiatives for the future of filmmaking from the perspective of filmmakers. You will watch several films assigned for the whole class, and also several more films of your choice, and will be asked to consider the following: How have the contributions of women (and others not traditionally represented in Hollywood) shaped film over the past century, whether or not their work was recognized by the history)? How are women, and people with other gender expressions such as non-binary, shaping film and TV today? What does that mean for future filmmakers?
