This class offers students the opportunity to explore the history of women, gender, and sexuality in the twentieth and twenty-first century United States. Citizenship, broadly speaking, will serve as our central theme. How has citizenship been gendered in the United States? How has gender intersected with other axes of difference (race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, and immigration status) to shape women’s citizenship status over time? How have different groups of women seen themselves as women and as citizens, and how have they defined those categories?

The course is arranged chronologically and thematically, with particular attention to themes of economic citizenship (labor, caregiving, and economic opportunity and survival), political citizenship (democratic rights and participation), and sexual citizenship (sexual autonomy and control, sexuality, and reproductive politics).
