A study of twentieth and twenty-first century English-language literature and cultural expression from Africa and the Black diaspora. Texts will include literature, film and/or music from throughout the Black world, including Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Topics to be covered may include the cultural legacies of slavery and colonialism, the negritude movement, pan-Africanism, the Harlem renaissance, apartheid, civil rights, the Black Atlantic, the development and use of new versions of English language, and Black popular cultures.
