Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/Contest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This contest's goal is to provide motivation to tackle the problem of a backlog of unreferenced biographies of living people on Wikipedia. This is a friendly contest in which the assumption of good faith is expected of all participants. The editor with the most points at the end of each month will receive something shiny to display on their userpage and bragging rights for a job well done. The winners will be everyone who uses Wikipedia, because with enough participation in this contest our goal of having verifiable information at our fingertips will be enhanced.

Rationale[edit]

As of 18 February 2010 there are just over 43,000 biographies of living people on Wikipedia that are tagged as having no references. As a part of one of the five pillars of Wikipedia it has been determined that content should be verifiable with citations to reliable sources. Articles about living people are particularly sensitive and should be treated with attention to verifiability, neutrality and avoiding original research.

Rules[edit]

  1. Points will be awarded for appropriately being able to remove a {{BLP unsourced}} tag from an article within a calendar month. This can be achieved by sourcing the article, merging/redirecting it to a more appropriate article, or by having it deleted by appropriate means (speedy deletion, proposed deletion, or articles for deletion.
  2. Unsportsmanlike conduct and assumptions of bad faith will lead to disqualification from the contest. It must always be remembered that the primary goal of this contest is to improve the encyclopedia.

Judging[edit]

In the spirit for which this contest is intended the honor system and the assumption of good faith shall be the law of the land. If anyone is not sure of how many points that they should award themselves they should post a request on the talk page for advice. Assumptions of bad faith, quarreling or bickering will result in a trout slap with repeated violations resulting in disqualification. If any participants are found to be harming the encyclopedia in order to score points they will be first educated in the proper means of acquiring points and required to correct all damage done, or removed from the competition for repeated or egregious violations.
