Wiki Focus: Black Women in Food and Drink History

As part of its effort to document and expand on the stories of African American women's contributions to U.S. culinary and beverage history, the American Food History Project at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History is co-hosting a virtual Wikipedia edit-a-thon. This virtual event, which will create new articles and improve existing articles about Black women in the history of food and drink, is in collaboration with the Smithsonian's American Women's History Initiative, #BecauseOfHerStory.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. There are also considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Black women’s history.

The edit-a-thon will begin with a training, when attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to Black women in food and drink history in the United States.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.
