This page lists the instructions for maintaining the Photography workshop Eight Requests page. Any experienced editor is welcome to help out.

Maintenance[edit]

There are four three steps to maintaining the Eight Requests page.

Step 1: Finding new images[edit]

To add new images to the Eight Requests, first locate eight images. (For accessibility, each image can be temporarily kept in separate browser windows or in tabs.) Images may be selected from the Suggestions section on the talk page, or they can be found by several other means:

  1. Commons Images for cleanup
  2. Wikipedia Files for cleanup
  3. Files by viewcounts lists most visible images in common maintenance categories (relies on GLAMorous and stats.grok.se)
  4. The GLAMorous tool, which can search specific categories and list images in order of use. Some quick links:
GLAMorous Category Searches
Images with watermarks Files needing restoration Images with non-free frames Images with opaque backgrounds Underexposed images
  1. If an image you are adding is unfree, please familiarize yourself with the {{Gl request}} template documentation on proper procedure.

Note: While there are no official prerequisites for what images can be placed in Eight Requests, please only add images that are being used in at least one article. Unused images have the lowest priority for cleanup.

Step 2: Adding the images[edit]

The new eight images will be inserted into Eight Requests, but the old images must not be overwritten yet.

  1. Click "edit" on the Eight Requests page (direct link)
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the edit window, where you can find the following gallery code. Copy the gallery code:
<gallery widths="160px" perrow="4">
<!-- ---------------ROW ONE--------------- -->

<!-- File One -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Two -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Three -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Four -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- ---------------ROW TWO--------------- -->

<!-- File Five -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Six -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Seven -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

<!-- File Eight -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}

</gallery>
  1. Scroll back to the top of the edit window and insert (paste) the new gallery code above the old gallery code, immediately below the <center> tag.
  2. Now return to your pre-chosen images. Copy the first file name (including the "File:" prefix) and paste it in front of the File One {{Gl request}} template.
  3. Update the request= parameter to reflect the work needed to be done. The result should look like this:
<!-- File One -->
File:Example image.jpg|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file= }}
  1. Update the remaining seven files.
  2. When this is done, the old image gallery must be removed and archived. Copy the old gallery code, then delete it from the edit window. The new gallery should be nestled between the <center> and </center> tags.
  3. Type "New images" in the edit summary, and save page!

Step 3: Archiving Eight Requests[edit]

The archives are located here and are listed by year.

  1. Open the proper archive, click "edit", and scroll to the very bottom.
  2. Beneath the last gallery, type the dates in bold, and paste the gallery code beneath the date. To save page bytes and loading time, please remove all the <!-- --> comments from the gallery code.
  3. Update the edit summary, and click save page!

Step 4: Updating the users log[edit]

A log is kept of every editor who contributes to Eight Requests. The log may be found here. There is also a link to it in the description of the main Eight Requests page.

  1. Open the edit window for the log, and copy the "updated by" sentence as instructed. Paste this sentence over the old "updated by" sentence (including any signature code).
  2. Update the user edit count as needed. Any new user names must be added—please keep the list alphabetized.
  3. Type "updated" in the edit summary, and click save page!

You've completed the Anonymous/Eight Requests maintenance.[edit]
