USS Shaw explodes[edit]

Original
Reason
Actually, this is a nomination for transferring the Featured Picture status from Image:USS Shaw Exploding.jpg (see nomination, promoted in May 2007) to Image:USS SHAW exploding Pearl Harbor Nara 80-G-16871 2.png. The PNG file seems to come independently from the JPEG (rather than having been converted), so is presumably of higher quality. In addition, the PNG does not have blemishes that the JPEG has.
Proposed caption
The destroyer USS Shaw explodes at her berth as a result of combat damage during the air raid at Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941.

  • This the same picture, equal resolution, but with the blemishes photo-shopped out, and in PNG format (converted or re-scanned, the blemishes are not from the original scan, but are a part of the photograph). I Oppose this one, as JPEG is the preferred format for pictures, and the blemishes come along with a picture that is almost 66 years old. Debate ensues... • Neutral; PNG is better than JPEG because it's lossless. However, I'm concerned if editing out the flaws of the original JPEG image and darkening the entire image in general is a good thing. I don't see much reason to edit a historical image. -- Altiris Helios Exeunt 09:19, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
