How do I appeal?[edit]

Ok, how do I appeal the deletion of the fictional military brat list? The final vote was 5-6---thus lacking consensus and I provided valid justifiable reasons for keeping it.Balloonman 15:04, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your re-review... I believe that the most vocal opposer of the list is a person who is hung up on the notion that one is a military brat by definition. And I think I addressed two of the opposers concerns (one who went on wikibreak implied that he was concerned about OR) and the other wanted to know about 'encylopedic value.' I actually have found a second scholarly paper on the portrayal of brats in literature. So again, thanks for the re-review.Balloonman 14:33, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Zsinj. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Gbstv.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Zsinj. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Hi, I have undeleted this image. User:NAHID had inappropriately added a speedy deletion tag some thirteen hours after challenging the fair use status of this image. Aside from the policies that require a seven day stay for rfu images, this one had a fairly strong rationale for fair use. If you have any concerns, please send me a message. Would you please urgently consider unblocking Badlydrawnjeff? I see nothing in his recent edits to suggest that he was actively disrupting Wikipedia, though he may have contemplated actions that could be disruptive. --Tony Sidaway 01:50, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Someone else unblocked already, but... Zsinj, this was a very, very bad block.

  1. Not properly discussed on-wiki (IRC does not count).
  2. Reasons given are insufficiently justified.
  3. With an arbcom case in fly, community actions have to be taken with greater care.
  4. Despite being controversial, Jeff clearly has the best interests of the Encyclopedia at heart.

Please don't do this again. Georgewilliamherbert 02:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You could add to that: "5. No warning given." --Tony Sidaway 02:30, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you seriously saying some people in a chat room told you to block him, and you did it? Friday (talk) 02:07, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since discussion seems to be centralized here, let me link to my original statement. Also, I am willing to disclose all reasoning that lead me to my conclusion, however as it seems my action has been counteracted, I will not protest it. In response to Friday, no, I was not "peer pressured" into it. ZsinjTalk 02:18, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Zsing, I couldn't find anything in his recent edit summary to suggest such a block was warranted. Are you always this gullible, or won't you buy my bridge? Jussen 02:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually on channel but watching South Park. Other people's eyes were elsewhere. I looked at the screen and someone was posting a block message and I wondered who it could be. Then I got a sinking feeling and took a look at Badlydrawnjeff's block log.
This is the worst case of groupthink (which is actually quite rare on IRC in my experience) that I've ever seen. --Tony Sidaway 02:29, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi![edit]

Hi Zsinj! I just wanted to drop you a line to note that I unblocked Mr. Raymond, thereby undoing a recent action of yours. As you're already aware of this, I just want to note that if you wish to discuss my undoing or if you have any comments or questions, please feel free to respond here (I'll watchlist your talk page), on my talk page, or via e-mail if you prefer. Cheers gaillimhConas tá tú? 02:26, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't believe we've met. That makes this entire situation that much more bizarre. I suggest you head over to Arbcom, because I'm either including you in the current ArbCom case or you'll be the centerpiece of a new one to make sure this nonsense never happens again. Thank you for your time, maybe we'll meet again under better circumstances. --badlydrawnjeff talk 02:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can't "make sure this never happens again". That would be cool, but ultimately there are a thousand admins, and you can't guarantee that one of themus won't go off the deep end tomorrow and block you, or me, or Jimbo, for no reason. -GTBacchus(talk) 04:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know you either, as far as I can tell, but I think you should at the least write Badlydrawnjeff an apology for your severely mistaken block of him. You didn't even post a note on his talk page as far as I can tell, let alone follow the process an admin should undertake before instituting a block. I'm sure his reply above may seem a bit escalating, but I hope you can recognize that he's terribly and justifiably upset by your actions. If you can't bring yourself to apologize to him, at least apologize to the rest of Wikipedia for this further disruption you've caused. Whether or not you should consider resigning your admin bit, I don't know, but I do strongly suggest you get some advice on when to block and when not to block. FrozenPurpleCube 02:56, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Inhale, exhale, please. Count to ten. Mistakes happen. This pretty clearly was a mistake. If even Tony Sidaway thinks someone's been hasty with the block button... if you don't know that storied history, that is a bit like John McEnroe saying that maybe you should calm down and moderate your language. :-) As long as it doesn't seem to be a pattern, we can probably recover, but there is plenty of room for it to get worse. Let's not make it worse, please. --AnonEMouse (squeak) 02:57, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And mistakes should be fixed. A mistake like this is best fixed by admitting your mistake. After all, if it's that obvious... FrozenPurpleCube 03:03, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that was an edit conflict, and an attempt to address the general smouldering, not a response to your request for apology specifically. Unindenting to make more clear, hopefully. --AnonEMouse (squeak) 03:09, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
K, fair enough, but my reply stands. FrozenPurpleCube 03:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I appreciate the notes above, but you don't need to bring any sort of commentary or apologies to me. The best thing you can do is full disclosure at this point, preferably at Arbcom. If you have logs, have them ready. But don't come to my talkpage to apologise, because I don't really want to hear it right now. --badlydrawnjeff talk 02:58, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your access to the admins' channel[edit]

In light of recent events, I am contemplating suspending your access to the channel for a period of one month. I have not made a decision on this matter, but so far the comments I've received on this idea have been mostly in support.

I have decided to sleep on this issue and will probably make a decision in the morning. My decision will, of course, be subject to review and reversal by any of the other channel administrators. However, it is my conclusion, and that of many others that I've spoken to, that your actions reflected very badly upon the channel and upon yourself. Participants in the administrators' channel are repeatedly and strongly urged not to attempt to use the channel itself as justification for any administrative action. Despite multiple warnings against this, you did exactly this. It needs to be made clear to both the Wikipedia community and to the other channel participants that what you did is not appropriate and not acceptable, and I am of the opinion that a suspension is the best way to accomplish this.

Regards, Kelly Martin (talk) 04:58, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We really only have two choices: people can make group decisions on irc and admit it, or people can make group decisions on irc and not admit it. Is the latter really better? Friday (talk) 05:06, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Third option - publish the IRC logs as if they were a mailing list. ViridaeTalk 06:21, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, Viridae.Proabivouac 10:29, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bad idea. For one thing, it would violate several different layers of privacy policy, not all of them under our control (you didn't think the Foundation ran its own IRC service, did you?). For another, there are discussions which take place on that channel which reveal—of necessity—private details of people who need protection from having said private details revealed in public. There are times and places where open discussion is good and proper: there are times when it is not. If you don't understand that, maybe commenting on it is not appropriate. Honestly, we've been over this how many times, now? —Phil | Talk 10:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recall[edit]

Good morning, I'm wondering if you'll accept RfA recall if enough users in good standing request this? Matthew 07:40, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's one bad block Matthew - no need for recall. Ryan Postlethwaite 07:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One really bad block, it also has multiple implications. The block itself really worries me - a block can really dent a persons morale. Matthew 07:49, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it was really bad - but Zsinj doesn't do it all the time - all admins balls up every now and again, I'm sure he's learnt his lesson without creating any more drama. Ryan Postlethwaite 07:52, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) You're right, he's(?) only human. I guess I'm frustrated at the way he made his decision (on IRC - which frankly is notorious for some of the worst decisions on Wikipedia). Zsinj please accept my humble apologies for this premature request. Matthew 08:00, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest I am QUITE sure he has learnt his lesson. ViridaeTalk 07:59, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do hope so. Matthew 08:00, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The IRC issue is another matter though... ViridaeTalk 08:23, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I request that you remain an admin and learn from your "mistakes". (H) 14:11, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would feel more comfortable if you resigned the sysop bit at this time and re-went through RFA at some point in the future. This is a stunning display of unsuitability for the bit, in my opinion, and would be no matter what established contributor you had blocked in this manner. -- nae'blis 15:07, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm sorry, I disagree, and although IRC is no excuse, I am positive that it wasn't just Zsinj that thought the block was a good idea. If he blocked people for no reason all the time, then you could suggest him resigning, as it happens, he doesn't, so resigning shouldn't be on anyones mind. Ryan Postlethwaite 15:33, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Block question[edit]

Looking over your block log of the past few months, I note a lot of proper banhammering of vandals, but also a number of username blocks that are frankly rather questionable. For instance, User:Teh_ownage_pwns_n00bs, User:Hihihihihhi, User:Ballzzz, User:Jumbojimbo101, User:Qwertyuiopq, and User:WTFF?? are either borderline with respect to WP:U, or quite acceptable by our standards. I was hoping you would consider asking a third opinion in such cases in the future, to avoid chasing off novice users. >Radiant< 11:12, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indeed, the latter. I can make some estimates at the reasoning (hihihihi could be random letters, ballz could refer to genitalia, etc) but these are, in my opinion, borderline (hihihihi could refer to laughter, ballz could be someone who plays tennis) so for such cases I would recommend dropping a line on WP:RFCN rather than blocking out of hand. Cheers, >Radiant< 12:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I attempted to say[edit]

I attempted to say this below your apology to Jeff, but he blanked it. Here is a link[1]. Peace. (H) 14:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And I'll simply reiterate that I believe it would be your best move. Resign, do some editing, and come back in a few months and show that you've regained the trust of the community in that you aren't prone to being influenced the way you were last night. --badlydrawnjeff talk 14:25, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jeff, I came here because you blanked my message to Zsinj on the first page I tried to post to him. I will do the courtesy of not blanking yours. (H) 14:34, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion Review: List of Rugby League Incidents[edit]

One of the most referenced articles in Wikipedia was deleted, with little discussion.

The Australian rugby league has a long history of violent incidents. Each incident was carefully referenced from major Australian newspapers.

I did not start the article, but when a Wiki administrator asked for it to be referenced, I spent weeks painstakingly finding references for each of the incidents. When the referencing was completed, the article suddenly got deleted.

Why sanitize the Wiki's coverage of Rugby League? The Rugby League pages in Wikipedia are now just fanboy pages, with zero difference between Wikipedia and the Rugby League clubs' own fan pages, full of unreferenced fanboy fluff. The one highly referenced article (this one) was deleted.

The list was the only comprehensive list of these incidents, and was referenced by many other wiki articles, and also referenced by other external sites. Lester2 23:58, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your change to Template:Wikify on 13 December 2006[edit]

Dear Zsinj

Your edit summary says merely "Requested edit". It appears that your edit involved the addition of two links that are at odds with each other, one of which is a questionable "guideline" that was made thus without discussion or consensus.

Your edit is a significant alteration to this template. Please advise who made the request, whether you weighed up the logic and utility of the change, and whether there was any discussion concerning it beforehand. Tony 00:03, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I do wonder what the addition of the BTW link adds to the adjacent one to "link in context", whatever it's called. BTW states that it's in conflict with the Context page (I may not be using the exact words—I'm short of time right now). Furthermore, BTW is a very strange guideline. It doesn't look or feel like a guideline, and the Allwiki section is kind of stuck in there without a clear status. Is that part of the guideline that "all users should follow", as the template says? BTW doesn't appear to be active. It's poorly written. It talks about "rules to consider".

I've since decided to take the issue to the Village pump, because, frankly, I don't think BTW should be an official guideline. Tony 04:14, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
