Tsunade (綱手), is a fictional character in the Naruto universe created by Masashi Kishimoto. Introduced in the first part on the manga. Tsunade life become problem, Tsunade take and became the position of Fifth Hokage (五代目火影, Godaime Hokage) to protect Konohakagure

Creation of name Tsunade come from Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya").

Creation and conception

Masashi Kishimoto create the character that name Tsunade. The character name come form Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya"). For the folktales of the "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya", the one of character idea become in Naruto series.

Character outline

Background

She come form Senju-clan. Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage. She is also grandniece of the second Hokage. Later on she joined Jiraiya and Orochimaru as a teammate. Her sensei was Hiruzen Sarutobi-sensei. Her sensei give them a test and Tsunade pass. Soon Tsunade started to study and play with her brother, Nawaki. Then the worst happened, Nawaki died and Orochimaru gave the first hokage necklace back to Tsunade and causing Tsunade to feel sad and depressd. Next Tsunade started to focus on medical jutsu. She asked the high council for medical ninja to teammate. Dan help her for medical ninja for team. Tsunade fall in love with Dan and give him the Hokage necklace. Soon later in mission Dan was injured. Tsunade try to heal Dan with medical ninjutsu but cannot stop the bleeding. Dan died and Tsunade was terribly upset.

Later on the years Tsunade come back and joined with Jiraiya and Orochimaru to created "Legendary Three Ninja" (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin), legendary Sannin. They face Hanzo and it was draw. Sannin take a break at the cave and meet Yahiko, Konan , and Nagato . Tsunade and the other share their food to Yahiko and Yahiko friend. Then Tsunade and her team start to leave and Yahiko, Konan , and Nagato ask them to for help. Tsunade decide to leave them alone but Jiraiya want to train them. After the Shinobi war end, Tsunade and her team split to their own path.

Personality

Tsunade constantly assumes the appearance of a younger woman, retaining only her characteristically large breasts. Despite her odd personality Tsunade is a talented ninja; she has superhuman strength that allows her to reduce buildings to rubble and can heal injuries that most others would consider incurable and her healing abilities. also Tsunade like to gamble. Her luck in gamble is low. She have a very low percent of win in gambling. extra information: Tsunade drink a lot and get drunk. For example When Jiraiya take Tsunade out for drink around Konoha.

Relationship

Tsunade first relationship is with her brother Nawaki. She took care of Nawaki like an older sister to a younger brother and always cared for his safety and health. Eventually Nawaki was sent on a mission with Orochimaru. Unfortunately, during that mission, Nawaki was killed by an explosive trap. His body, so mutilated from the explosion, was unrecognizable until Orochimaru retrieved the First Hokage's necklace and returned it to Tsunade. Due to Naruto's likeness of Nawaki, Tsunade later supported his goal to become the Hokage.

Tsunade first love was with a ninja named Dan. Dan help Tsunade's movement to include a medical ninja for each team. Dan told Tsunade that he wanted become Hokage to help Konohakagure. Tsunade gave him First Hokage necklace for good luck. At that time, they both started to spend time together. Afterword, Dan was report to a mission that he have to take. Tsunade wished him farewell and to be safe in his mission. Tsunade was in other team assign to be medical team. Tsunade was sent to mission where Dan was. Tsunade and team saw that Dan team was kill or injury. Tsunade looks around and see Dan on the ground. Tsunade went and try to heal Dan. Dan spoke to Tsunade that it was alright and he know that he will die. Tsunade refuse what Dan said and still try to heal him. When Dan died, Tsunade blamed herself that she couldn't save him.

Medical Ninjutsu

Shousen Jutsu

This is Ninjutsu that focus the user to use their chakra. This ninjutsu use those chakra to heal the user of their injuries and wounds. Tsunade use this jutsu for the last result in battle. The jutsu use all her chakra that she store in her mark in the forehead and starts to her injuries. The mark disappear when Tsunade use this ninjutsu. This cause her to be untouchable in battle.

The side effect of this ninjutsu cause her to turn wrinkle. Her skin start to lost chakra and result will show wrinkle of skin and even her face. As result of using this ninjutsu, cause her to take a long rest. Also the person can go to coma when using this ninjutsu with their feeling. For example, the battle with Pain. Tsunade use this ninjutsu for protecting the Konoha people from Pain attack. Afterword, while feeling of hope disappearing, she started to slide away. Tsunade soon when to stat of coma.

Summon Jutsu

Katsuyu

Tsunade summoning jutsu calls out Katsuyu. Katsuyu is slug that has a strong acid attack and even helps Tsunade to transfer chakra to other people. Katsuyu can also split apart to many small slugs. This will help Tsunade to spread out information and also to heal them. While Katsuyu splits apart, Tsunade also can see when Katsuyu see. Katsuyu also can transfer their own chakra to others. Katsuyu was friends with Toad summon and Snake summon.

Plot overview

In Naruto series news spread that Konohakagure lost their Hokage. Jiraiya and Naruto when out to search for new Hokage. Jiraiya appoint Tsunade to become the new Hokage because Tsunade as well as her former teammates Jiraiya and Orochimaru, is a former student of the Third Hokage. Tsunade first decline the offer but despite her connections to past Hokage, Tsunade hates the position when she is first introduced. After her brother and boyfriend Dan died in pursuit of their dreams to become Hokage, she lost faith in the title and the concept of dreams. She regained her faith in both after meeting Naruto Uzumaki, who consistently overcomes any obstacle in his own dreams of being Hokage. As a result, Tsunade accepted the position of Fifth Hokage (五代目火影, Godaime Hokage?) to protect Konohakagure on behalf of everyone she has loved. Despite the importance of her position, Tsunade tends to avoid her duties, instead leaving them for her assistants. She will fulfill her role to address matters important to the village. Near the end of Naruto first series, Sakura ask Tsunade for training to get back Sasuke. Tsunade takes Sakura Haruno as an apprentice, teaching her how to use both of her trademark abilities. Some character makes fun of Tsunade by saying that she older but her appearances of a twenty-year-old woman, retaining only her characteristically large breasts. Despite her odd personality Tsunade is a talented ninja. Tsunade age is unknown but she act mature. Additionally, Tsunade is a compulsive gambler with terrible luck. On the rare occasions that she hits a winning streak, she perceives it as a bad omen.

In the Beginning of Naruto Shippuden, Tsunade see Naruto finish his training with Jiraiya. Tsunade is not convincing that Naruto is ready for any mission. She will accept when Kakashi agree that Naruto and Sakura are ready. Later on when Kakashi when to hospital and Tsunade have to heal him, Tsunade need to find a new leader to for Team Kakashi. Danzo appear and try to form a new team member for Team Kakashi. Danzo refer Tsunade as "hime". He is some of the many characters in the series refer to her with the Japanese honorific "hime" (meaning "princess") because she is also the granddaughter of the First Hokage and grandniece of the second Hokage . Afterward in Naruto Shippuden, it leads Konoha in combating Akatsuki. When Konoha was leveled by Pain, she transferred all of her energy to Katsuyu, her slug summon, to shield the villagers from harm. Despite she has superhuman strength that allows her to reduce buildings to rubble and can heal injuries that most others would consider incurable. Her healing abilities are such that she has devised a method of regeneration for herself, making her all but invincible in battle. Her feeling of people that she cares of caused her to fall into a coma, leading to her temporary dismissal as Hokage. Soon Tsunade wake up for her coma, and see Shizune was happy. Kakashi come in and see her getting well. Tsunade take back the position of Hokage after Danzo. Kakashi explain to her what is going on. The war of started and in The Ninja 4th war, Tsunade feel that she sense her lover Dan.

Tsunade also appear in Naruto film and Naruto game. Her first Naruto film that Tsunade makes an appearance was in Naruto: Shippūden the Movie. Tsunade didn't have major impact in Naruto: Shippūden the Movie , Naruto Shippūden 2: Bonds. She play partly in those early film. Tsunade mostly major/appear in the film Naruto Shippūden 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire with Kakashi because the past impact with Tsunade and Kakashi in the film. In the Naruto Shippūden 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire , Kakashi said Tsunade Will of Fire is to let person that she care for and to let them go. As the side effect to the action, Tsunade will face the villager of bad reflection (blaming Tsunade). Also Tsunade appear in Naruto Shippuden 4: The Lost Tower giving mission to Yamato team (Naruto, Sakura, Sai).

In Naruto game, Tsunade is a playable character in some partly of Naruto video games, including some partly of the Clash of Ninja series Tsunade is playable for the start of series 2 of the Ultimate Ninja series.

Reception

In the Weekly Shonen Jump popularity polls there is the character form the Naruto series for people to vote on. One of the character is Tsunade. Tsunade has been featured consistently in the Weekly Shonen Jump popularity polls, commonly placing in the top twenty characters. The poll lastest for 2007 and the result for the poll was Tsunade is at 16th place. The vote for Tsunade was 595 form the people vote for Tsunade. Merchandise based on Naruto series. One of the Merchandise based Tsunade has also been released, including key chains, action figures, and her necklace for cosplay.

Through voicing the character Tsunade. The English voice actress Debi Mae West has enter to radio station. Acorrding to the juniorscave website for online magazines there where interview with the actress Debi Mae West. Noreé Leggett, the interview and ask about the Naruto character that she voice for. Debi reply by saying "Well honestly, in our world we read so many auditions and not a lot of prep time, so each character really only begins with reading some lines, and hoping that you will get booked or at least a call back. Tsunade I love, because she is a bad-ass, she likes to drink and gamble, and she wears a bindi on her forehead. I have been known to wear bindi's, and at times you could say I am a bad-ass, so I relate to how cool she is, and also the mentor quality she has." Also Noreé asks about what is the most moment about the character Tsunade. Debi reply by saying "The greatest moment for me playing Tsunade was the episode where she is bawling her eyes out about the death of her lover and her brother. Very rarely do cartoon characters actually cry and so I got to dig deep down into my soul and find some nuances about myself and about Tsunade and bring all those to life while talking into a microphone."

There is comment and criticism about Tsunade. Mania.com tells that Tsunade hold on her feeling and that can "mantle of leadership in a strong yet hurt" even when Kakashi gone. The Mania website also tells about the Tsunade beliefs: "Tsunade is so strong in her beliefs of Naruto... Tsunade herself again becomes a strong character". In DVD Talk of Naruto Shippuden Box Set 3, tells about the review of the Naruto show. In the article by John Sinnott talk about the mission and Tsunade assign which person to go on to the mission. Tsunade assign Team Kakashi to go on the mission. Sinnott says about the result of sent Naruto "she gets a lot of flack from some of the village elders for letting Naruto get so close to the Akatsuki". Sinnott also mention about Tsunade relationship with the elders. Acorrding to Sinott, "Her rationale for assigning him to that mission is pretty weak". In IGN, it tells about the character Tsunade. There is comment made in IGN. By Charles White tells in the article in IGN say "Tsunade is turning out to be an unusual Hokage". White also mention about the relationship to between Naruto and Tsunade. White says "have really great chemistry" about Tsunade and Naruto.
