Saw your animation, v nice. Still praying for an easier way? Maybe a script (.iv file) for Open Inventor would be a good approach? http://www-evasion.imag.fr/Membres/Francois.Faure/doc/inventorMentor/sgi_html/ Open Inventor is available as 'coin3d' and 'soqt', see coin3d.org.
