  • For law enforcement it is quite easy to geolocate mobile devices.
Not in Germany, unless they already know the ID and the approximate location of the device (see IMSI-catcher) - and that kind of geolocation doesn't work via IP, in fact, it doesn't even require a smartphone. And yes, there are documented cases where subpoenas failed due to that very reason (the provider shrugging shoulders and telling the LEOs that it could have been a thousand of their x million customers, as they were all using the IP in question at the same time through the UMTS NAT), it was even mentioned on a rather famous lawyer's blog some time ago.
  • It is possible to change usernames (almost) as quickly as IP's; so there is not much difference in that aspect. Making an account also takes less than a minute.
But it leads to a waste of usernames, IMHO, plus, the choice of username might be telling as well. And if you start naming yourself dummyuser1, dummyuser2, dummyuser3, it's quite obvious that you're the same guy. Same if you start using random character strings as username - sooner or later, someone's going to say "ah, it's the random character guy again", unless more folks pick up the same habit.
To me, it's easier and faster to pick one of my available ISPs at random, making sure I don't have the same IP I had before if I feel the need for it, and editing away on Wikipedia. The "plausible deniability" is higher, IMHO, as there are many other IP contributors to Wikipedia, from all the network regions available to me.
  • But IP's are geolocatable and some usernames are not.
Usernames can still be geolocated with the help of a Wikipedia admin (either rogue or under orders to do so due to a subpoena), so there.

  • I am not a lawyer and I don't know the laws in Germany, I don't speak the language and I do not live there. But I remember the stories about the Bundestrojaner. Law enforcement breaks the law once in a while. The IP is not the only thing that can be used to identify a mobile device, think about MAC addresses and International Mobile Subscriber Identity. If you are under investigation for a serious crime and you have a mobile device it is possible for law enforcement to follow you wherever you go. I think you are describing a situation where they wanted someone's logs retroactively; of course that is much harder for an ISP.
  • I agree that it leads to a waste of usernames, but there are almost infinite possible usernames, and it is possible to usurp usernames. Of course you need to be a bit more creative than X1, X2, X3 etc. but it isn't hard to make em up and if you are unable to you can steal ideas from other websites/fora where people use usernames.
  • Administrators are moderators, not sysadmins. They just block people, and protect and "delete" (hide from view) articles and stuff like that. The real sysadmins can do pretty much anything they please as far as I know. Moderators are not checkusers, they are unable to look up the IP-address for an username. As far as I know there are no rogue checkusers on EN wiki at the moment. Can I send you an email? Can you give me an Alternate Address for a mailinator.com address (starts with M8R-, ends with @mailinator.com)? Von Restorff (talk) 15:51, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I know, it's on the todo list. Would you be so kind to help organize this thing? It should be bigger and better than ever! Von Restorff (talk) 23:33, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I have made a few fixes to the page but I don't plan to do more. The page refers to {{User:Berean Hunter/NODRAMA}} which is for the 3rd Dramaout. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks PrimeHunter! I'll fix it later. Von Restorff (talk) 11:29, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for keeping me posted on developments I was no longer watching. I do want you to know that I did follow every possible link from the image before posting, which in this case was simply not enough. I was certainly wrong not to simply ask ONIH about it on his talk page before escalating it. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong and feel no need to remove your post from my talk page and will simply let it be archived. While I do remove harassment and pointless stuff from my talk page, I have no desire to hide instances where I have been wrong.

However, on the Nicole Kidman issue, I believe I am right and several editors agree with me that when an actress makes a public statement about limiting her roles due to her religious beliefs, that meets the requirements of WP:BLPCAT. I've been an editor of that article since before this particular dispute. ONIH has not at all addressed why he believes her public statements do not meet the requirements of BLPCAT. There are in fact three editors including myself who believe it meets BLPCAT, and only ONIH and Mo opposing. Consensus, not ONIH, is what determines whether or not some particular fact or combination of facts rises to meet the requirements. I will not be bullied off the article by an editor who has in fact taken a tone that can only be interpreted as bullying rather than collegial discussion. Yworo (talk) 17:19, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

YVW. I know it was a mistake, and I know you are not the kind of person who would do that kind of thing intentionally. I know you did some research, unfortunately it was not enough. I think it would be a good idea if you would avoid editing Kidman for a couple of days (at least 2), to allow this situation to de-escalate. I will edit my message on your talkpage. Von Restorff (talk) 17:37, 11 January 2012 (UTC) p.s. Remember: in the grand scheme of things it is not really important if Kidman is categorized correctly.
You change is noted. I certainly hadn't intended to edit the article with respect to that particular issue, only discuss it on the talk page. I do try to avoid crossing any bright lines into edit warring. Yworo (talk) 17:40, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
VR you have to remember that most of us editing Wikipedia are social morons with some level of Asperger syndrome. Seriously, who else would bother with this project? That should help keep things in perspective. I struck rather than removed so as not to make Memphisto look like an idiot. If anyone still wants to consider the apology insincere because of this, then I simply can't be bothered to give a fuck. Yworo (talk) 03:23, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I like lots of people with disorders in the autism spectrum but sometimes they do not get the help they need and deserve which complicates things unnecessarily. I care too much, some others care too little, the world is difficult. I appreciate your effort. Von Restorff (talk) 03:27, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Jon

Hi I'm a Wikipaedia novice so not sure how talk works or how whether this is in the correct place - but thanks for editing the Jon Driver entry, the details of his suicide were causing great distress to his family.Shumphreys (talk) 00:00, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello! You are very welcome of course! Sorry about your loss. Von Restorff (talk) 00:04, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately not everyone agreed with me. Normally it is easy for me to accept that, in this case it really annoyed me. I called in a favor from an old friend to at least remove the names of his wife and children. I am very sorry I am unable to help you better. Von Restorff (talk) 10:12, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Jon Driver - 3RR warning

Out of respect to your position as an experienced editor I am not templating you a warning but please take this as notice that you are in danger of breaching WP:3RR on Jon Driver. Contrary to your edit summary, User:Naraht is not edit warring; he only reverted once. The situation is that the compromise version has been inserted by three separate editors, once each, and removed three times by you. Further removal will constitute a breach of WP:3RR whether or not strictly within the 24 hour guideline. Please await the outcome of the discussion before acting again. TerriersFan (talk) 02:48, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

TBQH idgaf. This is a perfect example where ignore all rules applies. If you have respect for my position as an experienced editor who is goodfaithed, give me 48 hours. After 48 hours we can put the info back. Von Restorff (talk) 02:51, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

You could have been simpler.

Simpler and more to the point would have been you saying "Go Away" and I'll respond equally. The *only* people who have made a commitment to removing the word suicide are you and User:Shumphreys and she has an extreme COI.Naraht (talk) 14:19, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Where did I say something equivalent to "go away"? But now that you mention it, that would be a good idea. Go away please. And that last sentence is obviously wrong. Adrian J. Hunter wrote: "Shumphreys, if it were up to me, the article would omit all mention of your brother's death until some later date". Von Restorff (talk) 14:24, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Von Restorff. I would venture to suggest that it may possibly be a somewhat good idea to let Jake.edu alone for a little while.--Shirt58 (talk) 14:21, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, I guess (please correct me if I am wrong!) he is young and enthusiastic and wants to help improve Wikipedia but isn't quite sure how. Someone with a bit more experience should explain that to him, like a mentor. Are you willing to be his mentor? I think it would be a good idea if he joined Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. Von Restorff (talk) 14:28, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm, Bwilkins blocked him, I am not sure if that is a good idea. I hope his IP is not dynamic. Von Restorff (talk) 14:30, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Torrent

Thank you for sending that to me. However i'm not sure that it's a good idea posting it on Wikipedia talk pages. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:55, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I am not sure either to be honest. In my country it is legal to link to a .torrent file as far as I know, but I am not sure about America. Feel free to revdel if you want to; I don't think oversight is necessary. You should probably vote on WP:SOPA. Von Restorff (talk) 21:43, 16 January 2012 (UTC) p.s. 0/42 on virustotal.com

Thanks TerriersFan

You are allowed to remove our comments on your personal talkpage, but you are not allowed to change them. Of course I knew in advance that question was difficult to answer. Thanks for removing our comments, saves us both time. Von Restorff (talk) 00:55, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

TerriersFan removed the above comment, but according to the guideline Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines#Editing_comments (section "Refactoring for relevance") he should archive it here or move it to my personal talkpage. Von Restorff (talk) 01:06, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for amending your edit. I see that you made changes after I commented. Nimur (talk) 18:19, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
YVW. I was talking about what I wrote before your edit BTW; I did not "try to tell users which drugs are safe or unsafe". Compare it to marijuana; you'll see what I mean. Von Restorff (talk) 18:40, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Mustard seed

Ouch! WP:RD/S is rightfully hostile to religious claims contrary to scientific evidence, but whatever roscoe x's motivation, they asked a purely secular question. Please consider removing the second of your replies. -- ToE 10:19, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Why? Von Restorff (talk) 10:21, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Because WP:RD/S is not a discussion forum. You are expanding the scope well beyond what is called for, and creating an unnecessarily hostile forum. BTW, do you think that the Mustard seed article should be expanded to include the information in your first link? -- ToE 10:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Hostile? Do you think the article ignosticism is hostile? If so, please rewrite it. If not, you are probably referring to the comic. What is hostile about that comic? It is funny and accurate. Wouldn't it be hostile to not give someone good advice just because they have a different religion? The invisible pink unicorn says I should treat nonbelievers the same as those who believe in her and her awesome powers. If you think it is not undue weight you can of course mention this is one of the many mistakes made by the humans who wrote the bible. But in the article about slavery we are not going to mention the fact it is not OK to sell your daughter into slavery. And in the article about stoning we probably shouldn't mention the fact that even though the bible tells us to stone disobedient children it is still not a good idea. Von Restorff (talk) 10:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Peace. (I will answer your specific questions later when I have a chance, but can't sustain a length discussion at the moment (and now doubt that I will change your mind regarding your WP:RD/S reply, and have no desire to flog a dead horse).) -- ToE 10:55, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Tee hee hee. No worries, I love you, I just like debating. Von Restorff (talk) 11:02, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi again. I just collapsed the WP:RD/S discussion of appropriateness of your response and suggested that any further discussion takes place on WT:RD#Religion on the Science Refdesk again!. I did decide to include your second reply in the collapsed section, and you may wish do address that there as well. -- ToE 12:30, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, you made a mistake. You are claiming it was a religious response to a secular question, in reality the question was not secular at all. It was a religious question. Von Restorff (talk) 12:33, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
"After an insane amount of editconflicts" Hah! tell me about it. -- ToE 12:45, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Hehe, yeah, if some people see the chance to whine and nag and to make tempest in a teapot then they feel they have to make a lot of edits in a short amount of time which results in many editconflicts. Von Restorff (talk) 12:48, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

That's kind of a self-imposed interaction ban. 'Tis better to be safe than surly. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:25, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, whatever, I am going to ignore him too, playing hide the carrot is more fun. Von Restorff (talk) 07:27, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
As opposed to hiding the caret or the carat. How do foreigners ever learn English? It must drive them looney tunes. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:32, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
LOL. Nah man, learning ancient Greek is much much harder. I hated that teacher. English is the easiest language (apart from my native language) I've learned so far. Von Restorff (talk) 07:35, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
If your native language is German or Dutch, you've probably got an edge over someone from the Orient, as English is about half German anyway. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:38, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I got an enormous advantage over a huge part of the world's population, and you too. If I would've been born in Chad I would've had more serious problems as a kid than the fact ancient Greek is pretty difficult to learn. Von Restorff (talk) 07:43, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Sure. Better to be born in Shangri-La and live to be about 200. Then you can study Greek till it makes your eyes burn. The downside is that the older you get there, the more you look like Sam Jaffe. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
The asshats with their stupid flag sent an expedition trying to find it in Tibet. Because I have never used it again I forget most of what I learned, Latin is a lot more useful to me. I know you mean this guy, but I think that after so much studying it is likely that my brain would need to expand to make room for all that knowledge. Von Restorff (talk) 07:57, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm being funny about Jaffe, of course. He was a terrific actor. He played an Einstein-like character in The Day the Earth Stood Still, one of the best sci-fi films ever made. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 08:10, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! I know who it is and why he is doing it (I did a bit of Googling), he is an IP sock from a blocked user, should I request a block? Von Restorff (talk) 08:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I recommend that you consult a trusted admin via e-mail, so as not to give away the game nor any "outing" personal inf. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 09:33, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I've asked Franamax to take a look (not via email but via talkpage because it was before you responded). I did {noindex} this page so this person does not know we know what he is doing and the only personally identifiable information is here. Von Restorff (talk) 09:58, 2 February 2012 (UTC) p.s. Franamax has seen it, I removed the info, and Franamax has hidden the revisions.

Followup

I took a look at the problem you mentioned yesterday (for me) and decided the match was conclusive enough that a SPI report would not be needed. I've blocked the IP account in question for 3 months, as a sock of a banned user. Please let me (or any other admin) know if you see the same behaviour in future. Especially if it's within the next 3 months, I can consider unblocking that IP address, since he will have moved on to another one. As Bugs mentioned, it's best to keep possibly identifying information private. Thanks for the help! Franamax (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

You are very welcome. I will let you know if my spidey-sense starts tingling again; this duck is pretty annoying. Von Restorff (talk) 20:59, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Re: A Kitten

Hey, wow, thanks, that actually felt nice. I will always welcome a kitten. That's what I call a good start of the day.

And from someone who outs themselves as a fan of Kraków... I appreciate it. Have a great day! --Ouro (blah blah) 06:26, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

We (as a species) should replace all alarm clocks by kittens, a great way to improve our mood. I decided a long long time ago that if I ever have to leave the city I was born in I am going to move to Kraków. Not just because the city itself is so beautiful but because of the people. AnonMoos

I guess it is a good idea for those he insulted to speak up and annoy the heck out of him, so that he learns to be civil. Otherwise, the arrogant assholes will have wikipedia to themselves one day. HMallison (talk) 16:50, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Nope. It is a good idea for those who feel insulted by someone to be very nice and friendly themselves. That way it is easy for the admins to determine who to block, one guy is insulting people and the other person is not. If you start annoying someone because you feel that person insulted you then you are making the job of the admins harder, which may result in the wrong person being blocked or both people being blocked. It is impossible for "arrogant assholes" to control Wikipedia, because they cannot cooperate. Your idea of teaching someone civility by annoying the heck out of this person is plain weird; that is not how parents teach kids civility! I would recommend a cluebat, but do not try to do this yourself, you will need an admin who is not involved. Von Restorff (talk) 17:04, 16 February 2012 (UTC) p.s. If you want me to I can help you by asking a good admin to take a look at the situation. The admin will look at the behavior of all parties in the debate, so ignoring the opposition is an excellent strategy for both sides. p.p.s. Just to be clear: I am intentionally not picking sides and I did not read everything so I do not know who said what when and why. And frankly I do not care, because it is not really important. What I did see is this and that.
If what you say was true, I'd agree. But this certain user has called people names who stayed totally friendly, and still nothing happened. I know mods - as long as someone is just blustering loud enough and making many edits, nothing will happen to him. Or do you think calling someone "asshole" is acceptable? I don't, but apparently is is.
I appreciate your offer, but I have seen such attempts to call certain people to reason before - and I have nearly always seen them fail when people with many edits were concerned. That's all I have to say - if wikipedia wants people like him it will have to live with people like me, too. HMallison (talk) 18:15, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Calling people to reason is usually a waste of time, because those who need it are unreasonable. But stopping the debate between you and AnonMoos is a much more achievable goal. That means you can write stuff about dinosaurs without having to deal with AnonMoos. It is unlikely that the debate between you guys is going to have a positive outcome. Von Restorff (talk) 19:28, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
You can read below what AnonMoos wrote; I think this is the best possible result for you. If you think AnonMoos breaks his promise and seeks a confrontation do not respond to him but post a link here on my talkpage. Von Restorff (talk) 21:21, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

HMAllison

HMAllison is a content-free pure flame warrior, who has no respect for truth, facts, evidence, or article improvement, but is solely interested in flame-warring for the sake of flame-warring itself (which is why I called attention to 4chan and somethingawful as more suitable venues in which his particular kind of talent can find its proper scope). On Talk:Plateosaurus, I called attention to a relatively small, but still quite significant, factual problem with a claimed so-called "featured article"[sic], and he chose to take that as an excuse to unload the childish and immature taunting which he seems to be quite a master of, all in the service of obscurantism and ignorance as desirable goals in themselves (i.e. in order to actively resist fixing the problem, or even acknowledging that a problem existed). Fixing the problem required working around HMAllison's blithering inanities and juvenile irrelevancies, and for some reason HMAllison has never forgiven me for this. Going forward, I really want nothing more to do with the Talk:Plateosaurus crowd (the great majority of whom I do not find congenial or deserving of much respect, to put it mildly), but it's hard to see how that can happen as long as HMAllison follows me around for the purpose of stalking and harassing me (as he did at User talk:JoshNarins). AnonMoos (talk) 19:56, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Both of you want me to think the other guy is an asshole, which is an easy request for me because I can simply assume you guys are just two assholes who found each other on the internet, but in reality the situation is quite a bit more complicated than that of course. To be honest I do not care about the details of who did what when and why because it does not matter to me, which is why I am the ideal candidate to ask you both: "Would you be so kind to ignore and avoid the other person from now on, like a self-imposed interaction ban, if the other person does it too?". Von Restorff (talk) 21:08, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
We could well both be assholes in our own particular divergent ways -- but at the current moment I'm the one who really wants to move on and have nothing more to do with the Talk:Plateosaurus gang, while HMAllison is the one who is choosing to follow me around on Wikipedia for the purpose of stalking and harassing me (apparently cheered on by Nev1)... AnonMoos (talk) 01:31, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Is that a "yes"? Von Restorff (talk) 01:41, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
It means that in my ordinary pattern of Wikipedia editing, I would have no real reason to go to places that HMAllison frequents, so that if there's any confrontation, it will be of his seeking, not mine. However, I won't change my pattern of Wikipedia editing if HMAllison starts to appear in the places that I frequent... AnonMoos (talk) 02:11, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
OK. If you think HMallison is seeking a confrontation do not respond to him but post a link here on my talkpage. Von Restorff (talk) 18:05, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
As you can see, Von Restorff, it is AnonMoos who is calling people names and making insulting remarks all the time. This time, however, it seems he overstepped the bounds, and people have started to notice (after my little provocation). Thus, I'll happily slip away, considering my mission a success - I expect him not to come barging in impolitely and yelling at people so soon again. Many thanks for providing a sounding board! HMallison (talk) 14:03, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
As long as you both report any possible source of conflict to me instead of reacting or replying to them the system will take care of it, no worries. Blocks are used to protect the encyclopaedia, the punishment for rudeness is being disliked, which is worse than being blocked. Von Restorff (talk) 17:13, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Again, I wish you were right! In fact, the "punishment" for being rude is others leaving. I've seen this many times before. HMallison (talk) 18:49, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

John Darwin disappearance case: I appreciate you have subsequently provided an edit summary after my revert which was done in good faith. Thank you. I refer you to WP:FIES if you have any doubts about the edit summary protocol, with the aim of avoiding such confusion in future. asnac (talk) 16:40, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

No problemo. True, it is considered good practice to provide a summary for every edit, but the community has not made them mandatory. Don't you prefer to have one {{babel}}-template on your userpage instead of four? It is not necessary to have a template per language. See Wikipedia:Babel. In your case the code should be {{Babel|en|fr-2|de-1|la-2}} Von Restorff (talk) 22:22, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Ah. Looking again I understand the change you made to my page. Thank you. asnac (talk) 17:23, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
YVW. Maybe I should've used an editsummary . Von Restorff (talk) 20:29, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Help Survey

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,
