Game Warden Albert E. Farey, 1882-1932

Provincial Game Commissioner, A. Bryan Williams, described Game Warden Albert Farey as “a popular officer with a splendid war and peacetime record”.

On October 3 rd, 1932, the Game Department suffered its second tragic loss in as many years when Game Warden Albert E. Farey, of Lillooet, BC, was shot and killed while inspecting an illegally possessed deer hide.

Albert or “Bert” Farey was born in England in 1882. Farey immigrated to Canada in 1900, at the age of eighteen, and would eventually settle in the Lillooet area in 1920. His diverse experience as a big game guide, trapper, forestry patrol officer, Dominion Police Officer, and twelve years as a BC Provincial Police constable were a perfect fit for life as a Game Warden. Farey was also a decorated WW I veteran who had been wounded in action.

As with Dennis Greenwood and William Floyd, the tragic encounter between Warden Farey and his killer, Frank Gott, had not been their first. In 1929, Farey had charged Gott for the illegal possession of a deer carcass, for which he was later fined a total of $25.00 (approximately $290.00 by today’s standards). As a result of this conviction, Gott would bear a grudge against Farey for the next three years, a growing enmity that would culminate in the Warden’s ruthless murder.

On October 3 rd, 1932, Frank Gott had set up a hunting camp along the north fork of the Bridge River. With him were J. Thomas Dalton and 14-year-old Raymond Millar. Shortly after setting their camp, Warden Farey made contact with the three men. After a brief conversation with Gott, he decided to search the camp and its surrounding area. As a result of these efforts, Farey uncovered a bag containing a deer hide. However, the hide did not have the proper species tags affixed, which made its possession illegal. At some point during his questioning of Gott, as Warden Farey turned away to inspect the deer hide more closely, Gott fired two shots into his back, killing Farey instantly. According to Raymond Millar's testimony, "I saw Frank bring the rifle up about halfway and fire. Mr. Farey fell at the first shot".

After shooting the Warden, Gott handed the rifle over to one of his companions and walked calmly into the bush.

Following a two-day manhunt, Divisional Game Supervisor R.M. Robertson and Game Warden W.O. Quesnel confronted Gott at a crossing on the Bridge River. Gott refused to surrender and, ignoring several warning shots, was shot and wounded in the leg as he tried to escape. In a sad twist to an already tragic affair, Gott never stood trial for the killing as he died en route to the hospital from a combination of shock and advanced tuberculosis.

Warden Farey's murder was overshadowed by criticism of the police manhunt, as many in the community viewed Gott’s death as unnecessary. Gott, seventy-six years old at the time, and a life-long resident of the Lillooet area, was legendary for his skill as a woodsman and big game guide. A decorated WW I veteran, he had dyed his grey hair and enlisted in the army at the age of sixty, serving with distinction as a sniper. Proud of his military service and wartime achievements, Gott was known to have worn his army cap long after the war had ended. However, many critics chose to ignore that he had shot a dedicated Game Warden, in cold-blood, with no chance to defend himself.

While the local newspapers were keen to chronicle Gott's guiding expertise, outdoor skills and wartime achievements, scant attention was paid to the life of the murdered game warden. Game Warden “Bert” Farey was buried in the Lillooet cemetery. His funeral never even made the newspapers of the day.

Things in common[edit]

I'm following ICMP tunnel which led me to Image:DiagramNeeded.gif and then to Event monitoring. I'm thinking of cleaning up Event monitoring since the intro reads as a cross between link spamming and original research, when who do I see but you in the edit history from earlier this year cleaning up and wikifying. I have a feeling the two of us have more in common than simply WP:EiC. Anyway, somewhat related to all this, here are some possible issues I've run across tonight:

Pseudoscalar[edit]

Next time that you have any questions about physics or math, consider contacting Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics or Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics. In this case, it would have saved you the time and effort spent trying to sort out the various links to the article. Parks in British Columbia cat re change on Victory Square[edit]

Hi; saw your change to Victory Square's category; I'm surprised there's not a Vancouver parks cat; you'd think there would be; especially since GVRD-wide there's tons of them. My concern with the Parks in British Columbia category is that it's going to be huge once all prov, RD, fed and municipal parks are added in. Wouldn't a subcat hierarchy be more workable? Saw your response on my talk page and agree about not all parks being worthy; but even in the city of Van it's a list: Hastings, Queen E, Stanley, Jericho, Vanier, Pacific Spirit, China Creek etc, which have some history or other significance to them; and no doubt people will want their own neighbourhood greenspace added in, like that new insta-park at Homer and Davie, as we've seen with "invented neighbourhoods" (remember "Dickens"?); but I'm not the sort to leap in and invent categories because I don't know the existing hierarchies well enough. One little tidbit park comes to mind that's almost worth a blurb is that little creek just west of where Point Grey Road meets MacDonald; it was featured in the film That Cold Day In The Park (Altman's first-and-worst, they say...); can't remember what it's called right now...

Might as well take the time now to invite you to sign up for the draft BC WikiProject at User:Buchanan-Hermit/WikiProject-Sandbox, where tonight I fielded the idea by Buchanan-Hermit that the model for project organization cooked up by the incredible Phædriel tell me for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America (q.v. her revamp as of the last few days) be used to help coordinate what obviously will be a vast and complicated set of articles/issues and sundry; he wanted input from other editors but only he and me (he and I?) are signed up so far, and the project's not "gone official" of course; he's no slouch in the formatting department himself as the User:Buchanan-Hermit page demonstrates. But given that suggestion, it also seems a propos that maybe Phaedriel's layout be applied/adapted to the Vancouver WikiProject also; I know only a few people bit at those table formats I tried introducing, but if the project layout were made less unwieldy they'd work in just fine. BTW re Education in Canada project[edit]

I don't have a copy so can't cite you a page ref, but FYI I was somewhat stunned while reading Francis Decker's Pemberton: History of a Settlement to discover that correspondence courses for elementary and high school were first introduced anywhere in response to pressure and ideas from parents in the Birken-Gates Valley (between Pemberton-Mt Currie and D'Arcy) in the first decade of the 20th Century. Not sure where that fits into existing education articles but if that's one of your WikiFields I thought you might like to know that. Turns out, as an unrelated aside, it was a farmer up there (but in the Pemberton Valley, i.e. the Lilloet River Valley) who was the first to recognize iodine as a cure for goiter (in cattle, originally).Skookum1 09:16, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mission Bridge vs Mission CPR Bridge[edit]

Hey; saw your tweak. I know why it's necessary, but the usual and traditional name for it is "the Mission Bridge", now of course meaning the highway bridge; I went to MSS and the bridge (and its line-up) was a part of local life; I guess the official or official-Wiki name has to be Mission CPR Bridge; looks really weird, though, like the long-form Second Narrows Ironworkers Memorial Bridge vs Second Narrows or Ironworkers (as has come into vogue lately). Also I'm not sure it was always CPR; I think it was Burlington Northern; at least as far as Abby (from the border) but I'm pretty sure the track crossings/overpasses in Matsqui Prairie say "Burlington Northern"; or used to, anyway. Before the building of the Pattullo rail bridge (CNR, BNR or BCER I'm not sure whose) rail traffic from the US had to go through Mission via this bridge; I probably already said that in the article, though.Skookum1 19:32, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Water airports[edit]

I see the problem. There is Coal Harbour, Vancouver and Coal Harbour, British Columbia. So Vancouver Harbour Water Aerodrome CXH/CYHC is at Coal Harbour, Vancouver and Coal Harbour Water Aerodrome N/A/CAQ3 is at Coal Harbour, British Columbia. Students' Unions[edit]

Your proposed speedy renaming is fundamentally incorrect. A Students' Union is capitalised. (I've worked for them.) That is their formal name and a proper noun. Lowercased, it means an informal union of students. They are formal bodies with a formal name. Similarly your proposal re Students' Associations is wrong. That is their formal name, so a proper noun and capitalised. Wikipedia policy is to uppercase proper nouns, not lower case them. Your nominations are factually incorrect. I strongly advise you to withdraw the nominations.

  • Hey, can someone point me to the place where the above-referenced discussion is going on? I personally believe that "students' union" should not be capitalised. (I've been the president of two.) To clarify, when we are talking about the name of an organisation (e.g. the University of Saskatchewan Students' Union), then it must be capitalised, just as one must capitalise "Corporation" in "Microsoft Corporation". However, when one speaks about, say, "tax cuts for corporations", one does not capitalise the word because, in that context, it is a common noun, not part of a proper noun. Thus, if one were to say that "Canada's students' unions lobbied against tax cuts for corporations," for example, then one would not capitalise, for the same reason. The distinction has nothing to do with the organization being formal or informal (again, the corporations who may be getting tax cuts are still formal bodies, they just don't get a capital "C" because their names are not currently involved.) Question on preferred name form, i.e. formal or usual[edit]

Hi; I'm about to start an article on Frank Gott/Francis Gott, a war hero and hunting guide from the Lillooet country who killed by a game warden as he was hunting out of season and then shot while trying to escape, dying of complications from the wound vs. his tuberculosis (which is why he was hunting; native cure is deer liver); he was of mixed parentage with a white father and so wasn't legally Indian and couldn't hunt whenever he wanted: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/cos/100years/honour_roll.html (bio of Farey, the guy he shot). Anyway, he's usually known around town as Frank Gott, his legal name was Francis, as in the war registry/archive. Is it OK to use Frank Gott, or should I stick by the formalities? Also tricky because he's what we used to be comfortable calling a halfbreed but technically now is a Metis by the new constitutional definitions; but not according to the text on Metis, so I'll just say "mixed parentage" I guessSkookum1 19:10, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Democracy disambiguation[edit]

I was going to revert this back to mine, since your version merely moves the bulk below the useful ambig stuff, and deletes those that don't contain "democracy", which, despite what Bruce says, wasn't my reorganizing principal. But I notice you had made previous edits on the page to bring it in line with the MOS:DAB guidelines for links and things, so I'd rather try and convince you first. Could you take a look at my notes to Bruce at Talk:Democracy_(disambiguation)#Neutrality_dispute, especially the "Parliament" and "Freedom" disambig examples. I can't find any examples of a good disambig page that lists large numbers of articles of the "adjective noun" format under a disambig page for noun, where the articles aren't distinctly separate senses of the word (as in the "Freedom" case). Here, all the articles are under the general "Democracy" umbrella in the "political" (or whatever) context, and are they not direct disambiguation candidates for "democracy" under any Wikipedia usage I've seen so far. - David Oberst 22:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disabig - School Pages[edit]

On your moves for Schools, I have no problem with the long(South Park Elementary School, Victoria BC) or the short version(South Park Elementary School, Victoria). The only issue I saw is that the short heading may not be that helpful especially on disabiguation pages. Edgewater Elementary School (Edgewater) - where the school name and the town name are the same or South Park Elementary School (Victoria) where the town name is also subject to disabig. I noticed that you had deleted allmost all of the content on the Vic High page as a copyright violation. I admit I did crib heavily, but it was not a cut and paste job. Most of what was left from the original was either commonly used terminology "Oldest high school north of San Fransisco and West of Winnipeg", "two room log cabin" (both of which are part of the common story for the school) or purely factual information (dates, class size and composition) I had changed around a few sentences, added some more information from other sources, confirmed much of the information from other sources and removed stuff that didn't seem important to me.

I justified this to myself in that it was pretty much just dates (most of which I was able to confirm from other sources), but it did leave a few phrasings in there that were unique, and I probably should have done a better job of editing it. I have now edited that paragraph more, removed some less important features -- although I am having second thoughts about removing the class composition as that may have been unusual to have so many girls going to high school. Oh, I see. I think it'd be controversial because of the long list of dab entries, most particularly the presence there of the Roman Augustae and Augusta, Maine, a state capital. The topic cropped up on the settlements convention talk page, couple of comments there murmuring about how Augusta, Georgia, getting the rd isn't entirely correct. BC history/heritage stubs? road stubs?[edit]

Came here because I saw you were the most recent person to work on [:Category:British Columbia geography stubs]]. I just sat about reviewing Cariboo Road and saw it has a Roads in Canada stub; it and other major items in the offing, and already around, could use a common cat; geog and politican stubs are all there is right now. Occurred to me while writing this that Skookum and similar "BC culture" articles could be given these cats if the "heritage" term is used, instead of "history". Prepping to write the Omineca, McDame, Big Bend, Rock Creek, and Wild Horse Creek gold rushes up soon, so all would fit in one of these; hsitory's not just about the pols, of course. New 10,000 Challenge for Canada[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile!
