1900 Olympics Cricketers[edit]
I've noticed that you've been adding various details (middle names, DOBs, etc) to the profiles of the British players at the 1900 Olympics cricket tournament. Saint George Ashe[edit]
Could you please give the source for your statement that British rower at the 1900 Olympics Saint George Ashe was born in Malta. This circumstance isn't related in any of the usual sources for early Olympians biographies (e.g. Mallon, de Wael)?
Reply - Ian Buchanan's book "British Olympians" (Guinness-1991) has an entry (birth/death places/dates) for every British gold medallist and also an index of all British competitors (up to 1988) with birthdates only.
Cross referencing with the website http://www.1901censusonline.com comes up with the entry
St George Ashe age 29 - born Malta - London - St Giles In The Fields & St George Bloomsbury (Solicitor).
The 1881 census also confirms this result and nobody with remotely the same name is listed. It's not really "original research", more just marrying print and on-line information together and obviously it won't work with a more common combination of names. Topcardi 13:11, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I guess you're technically right, but you can see him in this image proudly sporting the Union Jack. I know this is probably going on original research, but it just makes me assume that he probably considers himself to be British as opposed to Nigerian. According to WP:ID, "Use terminology that subjects use for themselves (self-identification) whenever this is possible. Hello! I note that you recently edited the above article in order to say that the IOC accepts the 1900 and 1904 tournaments as official, citing the IOC website as evidence. However, I looked this up on the IOC website, and what it says is that "In 1900 and 1904, football was introduced as an exhibition sport and became the first team sport included in the Olympic Games. Since 1908, the sport has been held at every Olympic Games with the exception of 1932 in Los Angeles". Doesn't this mean that football was not an official tournament at the 1900 and 1904 olympics, but rather an exhibition sport, and the first full tournament was in 1908? To be honest, I am not really fully conversant with what one would actually call an "official tournament" at the Olympics, and whether exhibition status counts in this regard; however, surely it needs to be noted that the IOC considers these events exhibitions in distinction to the tournaments that have been held since 1908? Hello, thank you for finding and referencing the article which confirms that the archaeologist and shooter are the same person. Perhaps the contents should now be moved to the disambiguation page Charles Waldstein since there seems to be only one person with that name on Wikipedia, and Charles Waldstein (archaeologist) and Charles Waldstein (shooter) should be converted into disambiguation pages - are there any other talents of this polymath which are waiting to be discovered? Jack Egan[edit]
I found his real name from the newspapers of this era. I encountered this first in this The New York Times article (click to View Full Article, the second paragraph of the article). Him boxing under pseudonym was quite an hot news back in 1905, you can get more hits of this when searching the Library of Congress Historical Newspapers Archive (insert Jack Egan under exact phrase).

I'm afraid I can't shed any light on the relationship between Frank and Mike, although the chronology appears to fit, as Mike was born in Milford-on-Sea in 1902. My reference books merely say about Mike what I put in the article when I expanded it last September. I've had a look elsewhere, but have drawn a blank.

List of heavyweight boxing champions[edit]
Hello Topcardi,
I am very interested in the article List of heavyweight boxing champions. I notice you have edited this particular article frequently in the past.
I am especially interested in two of your edits:
Both concern the NBA/EBU/NYSAC and who they recognised as their world heavyweight champions.
It appears that the conclusion you have come to with your first edit is that:
(a) between June 22, 1949-September 27, 1950, Ezzard Charles was the NBA champion; (b) between September 27, 1950-June 16, 1951, he was now also the NYSAC champion (as well as the NBA champion); (c) between June 16, 1951-July 18, 1951, he was now also the EBU champion (and ultimately, the universal champion, as he held all three belts); (d) Lee Savold was the EBU champion between June 6, 1950-June 16, 1951.
Here are my thoughts on the above:
(a) cannot be disputed.
(b) bearing in mind that September 27, 1950 was the date that Charles defeated Joe Lewis, the fact that he held just two of the three world heavyweight title belts in this particular time period is directly contradicted by the paragraph below which states:
"Charles won the vacant National Boxing Association championship, but was not universally recognized as champion until defeating Joe Louis, the former champion who had come out of retirement."
According to the profile of Ezzard Charles on boxrec.com, it states that following his victory over Lewis on September 27, 1950, "Charles became universally recognized as the World Heavyweight Champion."
Surely he would have to gain recognition from all three organizations in order to become the universal champion, not just two?
(c) cannot be disputed.
(d) according to Lee Savold's profile on boxrec.com, the world heavyweight title that he won on June 6, 1950 was "Recognized only by the British Boxing Board of Control" and it was this which passed over to Ezzard Charles on June 16, 1951 (specifically June 15, 1951) when Savold lost to Joe Lewis.
So I guess the questions I would like to ask your are:
(a) who did the EBU recognize as their world heavyweight champion between September 27, 1950 and June 15/16, 1951?
(b) If indeed the answer is Charles, was the EBU title (like the NYSAC title) left vacant from Joe Lewis' retirement on March 1, 1949 all the way through to September 27, 1950?
Regarding your second edit:
I notice that you have stated that Muhammad Ali was stripped of his NYSAC title on April 29, 1967 when he refused to be inducted into the US Army. You have then stated that Joe Frazier won this title in March 4, 1968.
I was wondering, therefore, if you knew who the NYSAC recognised as their world champion between June 19, 1964-February 6, 1967 because the only belts that appear to have been accounted for in this article between those dates (when Ali was no longer recognized by the WBA for agreeing to an immediate rematch with Sonny Liston) are the WBC title (Muhammad Ali) and the WBA title (Ernie Terrell, from March 5, 1965).
It mentions in the article that "The WBC and other organizations continued to recognize him" but did not specify whether the NYSAC were one of these organizations.

List of heavyweight boxing champions[edit]

Thanks very much for responding to my message so quickly and in such detail. It is very much appreciated.
I've just edited List of heavyweight boxing champions to incorporate some of the things that we spoke about. I wasn't logged in at the time though so it won't recognize the edit as being from Standingfish.
Take a look at the edit I made and feel free to change anything that is inaccurate.
I have a few further questions:
1) I changed a paragraph which read: "Savold lost the recognition he had as "world" champion in Europe and the British Commonwealth when he lost to Joe Louis in a non-title fight in June 1951."
By Europe, I presume the person who wrote this sentence was referring to the EBU and the area that the EBU covers. By the British Commonwealth, I wasn't sure if they were referring to the BBBofC (and the area it covers) or the British Commonwealth as a specific boxing organization (and the area it covers). I understand that there is a Commonwealth (British Empire) world heavyweight championship and I presume there's a governing body behind that particular championship. If so, was the person referring to that particular boxing organization as the one that awarded the recognition, the BBBofC or perhaps someone different completely?
2) I decided not to edit this, but here goes: There is a sentence which reads: "In late 1934 the International Boxing Union ordered world champion Max Baer to defend his title against the reigning European champion, Pierre Charles of Belgium."
According to boxrec.com, Pierre Charles was not the reigning European Champion in late 1934 - that's assuming it is the EBU (European) heavyweight title to which it is being referred. He lost to Paulino Uzcudun on May 13, 1933 to relinquish the title and didn't regain it until June 21, 1935 when he beat Vincenz Hower.
3) In the article, there is a line which reads: "Schmeling defeated Jack Sharkey to earn universal recognition as champion". I was particularly interested in the word 'universal' and presumed he may not have been recognized by all the organizations prior to his victory over Sharkey. I then started looking at the profiles on boxrec.com of Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney. For some fights, these legends are not listed as being the world heavyweight champion despite being listed as the NBA/NYSAC world heavyweight champion and vice versa. There are also funny combinations of holding only one of the NBA/NYSAC titles (but not the other) at the same time as being world heavyweight champion. There is even one instance when Dempsey was the NYSAC champion but not the NBA champion or the world heavyweight champion. What do you make of this?

Oleg Maskaev[edit]
He's Russian, it says he's Russian on boxrec and everyone only has 1 flag next to their name. He associates himself as a Russian therefore, he has that flag next to his name. He wasn't even that great or special of a fighter to begin with but he DEFINITELY didn't do anything in his career that warrants him being the ONLY fighter on that list to have 2 flags next to his name... Wladimir Klitschko was born in Kazakhstan yet he has a Ukrainian flag next to his name because that's how he wants to be identified. Unless you're in close contact with Maskaev and can prove that he wants the American flag next to his name, then he's only getting the Russian flag. Katharine Maltwood[edit]
The analysis in Wikipedia: Magna Mater (1911) was Maltwood’s first publicly recognized work. It was designed as a triptych. The central individual is crouched with his arms bound together. His position resonates with despair and struggle. The man’s strong legs and arms connote that he is a labourer. On either side of the labourer, mounds of people are bound together along a rope. The quote is taken from Sirach 40 or the Ecclesiasticus, which states, “Great travail is created for every man, and an heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day that they go out of their mother's womb, till the day that they return to the mother of all things.”

I checked the editing done on this article. The analysis was written like this from the beginning. It's strange that the original author used the Maltwood site as his/her main source and yet wrote the description of Magna Mater from a different source or maybe even his own head. Hi Topcardi. I was hoping you might recall details of the now dead website, datasheets.tip. You used in as a reference here, which I changed yesterday to the original IOC document [1]. olympic bobsleigh[edit]
That is an interesting suggestion. If true it would marginally affect the tables (helping Nigeria) but would have no bearing on the inaccurate claims of them being actually qualified. It may help explain why the Czech Republic was able to compete in 2014, the problem with that example is that they never produced a document stating how countries qualified and there was one more event affecting rankings after the final relevant competition. And seems to be in conflict with the qualification for skeleton in 2014, but the IBSF never really explained why the field was not filled there. Also why wasn't Lee Webster included in 2014? If he choose not to complete (or his NOC), why was he at least not hailed as the first African qualifier in skeleton?18abruce (talk) 22:12, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

- Thanks for all the communication, really want to get it right. It is difficult because there is nothing that can really be sourced that indicates a modified ranking list, and the rules give no hint of this. I can see from what you are saying that an eligible competitor from Africa or Oceania (in women's bobsled) would be as good as qualified because if you remove entries from nations that have more than three sleds you are left with less than 35 total. In that light though it makes it kind of bizarre that they would even have a rule for the top 40 when that would only make 35 total sleds last year. We should likely do something to the qualification lists for bobsled and skeleton, but need to find a way of not using weasel words.18abruce (talk) 02:34, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Short version: all of the dead links redirect to the same page which returns a status 200. As a result the InternetArchiveBot (which runs on 30+ language wikis) does not detect the links are dead and does not add an archive URL. Thus we have millions of Olympics links that are dead across dozens of wikis and not effective tool to fix them.
Long version: IABot can mark entire domains dead in its database, but it can not mark partial like in this case where many sports-reference.com URLs are still live under a different non-Olympics path. However IABot has the ability to mark each individual URL as dead, but then a new problem arises: IABot has a feature if a user ever reverts a bot edit, on any wiki for any reason, it takes this as a signal to mean the entire domain is live and resets all individual URLs in its database to a live state (again, IABot sees things only on a domain level not domain/path level). So we can't mark the URLs as dead in the IABot database. And the sports-reference.com site is not signaling the URLs are dead, either.
In the mean time we have millions of dead links. It could most easily be solved if sports-reference.com would signal the links are 404. If that is done, we can set IABot loose and it will being loading Wikipedia with archives of the links.
