Userpages[edit]

While I appreciate your offers to help people make their userpages better, remember that this is an encyclopedia. Not everything here is about userpages or their design, for example.--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:27, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If people are not interested, I would naturally stop wasting my time. It was a test to see if anyone interested.
In general, it shouldn't be your primary focus here - while some Wikipedians have really tricked-out userpages, the primary focus should be on making an encyclopedia.--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:47, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My primary focus here as elsewhere is having fun :) with helping making things and people better. This conversation, for exmaple, is not improving the encyclopedia, but helping members, you and me understand one another, and thus make us want to do more things for the encyclopedia.
From WP:User pages - "User pages are for communication and collaboration. While considerable leeway is allowed in personalizing and managing your user pages, they are community project pages, not a personal website, blog, or social networking medium. They should be used to better participate in the community, and not used to excess for unrelated purposes nor to bring the project into disrepute." 50.131.220.134 (talk) 04:53, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. And better user pages encourage better communication and better collaboration.
All that is true. But many users believe their userpages are already good enough - if they don't, they might ask you (versus you asking them); it isn't that important to an effective community. It's just my friendly advice that the community might not be pleased at your efforts if you don't also start contributing to the encyclopedia.--Jasper Deng (talk) 05:06, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your friendly advice.
  • Please note also that not all users appreciate getting messages out of the blue, from someone they don't know and who is new to Wikipedia, and which appear to be, well, spammy. I am not going to touch upon the matter of whether your user page design is better, and certainly not whether it leads to better communication--I'm just telling you that mass mailing is looked down upon. Happy editing, Drmies (talk) 17:45, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Software can be malware[edit]

I noticed you are offering a program for editors to prepare a user page, and your subpage here includes the advice to visit an external website (http://wikiversuite.wordpress.com/downloads) to download and install an executable program. According to your user rights, your account was created two days ago.

I think it is very undesirable for editors to install programs offered by someone on the Internet. While it is likely the program is exactly what it claims to be, it sets a precedent that it is a reasonable practice for editors to install software under those conditions. However, such a practice is extremely dangerous as malware can be very sophisticated, and is increasingly being designed to attack specific targets. A choice target here would be administrator accounts: malware could detect an admin and perform large amounts of mischief at Wikipedia—that is my concern.

I'm sorry to be so alarmist about what I'm sure is a genuine attempt to offer useful software, however someone might copy your code to insert malware, then also offer it to editors. The point about targeted attacks is that they are very difficult (generally impossible) for antivirus software to detect, so editors expecting protection may be disappointed. As Jasper Deng advised above, it would be desirable to focus on contributing to the encyclopedia. Johnuniq (talk) 09:27, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

July 2012[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:48, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
