Josette Simon[edit]

You have removed details of her birth date and place on a couple of occasions, yet these details can be checked on FreeBMD. Or are there two people called Josette P Simon ? RGCorris (talk) 12:59, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RGCorris, I am one of Josette's representatives and would prefer her DOB to not be in the public domain. I don't think I have removed her place of birth. TomDale90 (talk) 15:17, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest and a note about Josette Simon's birth year[edit]

Hi -- as you're a representative of Josette Simon, there are a couple of policies you need to be aware of. One is the conflict of interest (COI) policy, which says you should disclose your relationship with the subject of your editing. You've done so here, so I've added a notice to the talk page for Simon's article that lets other editors know of the COI. Per the suggestion on that policy page, you should make requests on the talk page of Simon's article for controversial changes, rather than editing it yourself. As you can see from the comments of other editors who have reverted you, the removal of the year of birth is controversial.

You also may want to look at the policy governing biographies of living people. This is known as the BLP policy. It includes a section about privacy; see here for the section about dates of birth. You can request removal of the exact date of birth because of privacy concerns, but there's no such concern about the year. To be honest, the dates for Simon's acting career strongly imply a birth date within a year or two of 1959 anyway.

Please follow these policies. If you feel after having read those policies that you can make a valid argument for the removal of the birth year, go ahead and make that argument on the article talk page, but don't edit the page to remove it. If you have any questions, let me know. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:22, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike, thank you for the info and sorry to keep editing, I wasn't aware of the rules but won't do any changes going forward. Would it be possible to compromise and remove the DOB date from the first line and the box and just have it in the Early Life section? The reason I ask is that is is very common for actors to want to keep birth date info private because we know from experience that it can and does interfere with casting opportunities so there are real world reasons other than security for wanting to keep the info private. If we just have the birthdate in the Early Life section, the information is there for people who want it however it would not show up on the first page of Google in the little paragraph. Would that be possible? TomDale90 (talk) 12:36, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's not an unreasonable question, but to be honest I don't think the privacy policy extends this far -- "preventing harm" would be the justification, I suppose, but we don't hide negative information in general. I have posted a question about this at the relevant noticeboard; you can find that discussion here. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:51, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per that discussion I've removed it from the lead and the infobox. Glad this worked out well. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much, really appreciate it. TomDale90 (talk) 10:24, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
