ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

New Page Review newsletter December 2019

A graph showing the number of articles in the page curation feed from 12/21/18 - 12/20/19

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Harriet

You removed my edition of the Harriet film. I provided sources. A lot of what I discuss is covered elsewhere on wikipedia, as demonstrated by the links I pointed to--unless you actually have doubt as to whether or not there were black slave catchers(there weren't), or actually that Harriet's owner bought a slave and then fell in love with her (though not enough to free her or not buy her in the first place, which required her to escape in the first place), and need some sort of scholarly validation of these things... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.197.184.250 (talk) 17:54, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi! I just wanted to say thank you for reverting vandalism recently (beating me a lot of times), but I was just wondering why you don't typically leave warnings to the vandals past their first offense. Without doing so, it's hard to report the vandals to AIV since they never received a level 4 warning. — Chevvin 19:55, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean. I thought I did? TheAwesomeHwyh 19:57, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Taking a quick look at your history, it looks like you're giving out level-1 warnings, but not anything past that. Maybe your Huggle settings got messed up somehow? I'm not entirely sure, but I figured I'd let you know that for whatever reason the warnings aren't working properly. — Chevvin 19:59, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Huh. Weird. I'll look through my settings now. TheAwesomeHwyh 20:01, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
I don't see an option for it in Huggle's settings. TheAwesomeHwyh 20:03, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Hmm. I'm not all that familiar with how Huggle works so I can't really help you, but it just seems really strange that it would just stop after the first warning. — Chevvin 20:09, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Yeah. I'm going to try to figure this out before I do any more anti-vandalism work. I will try to update you if I figure out what went wrong. TheAwesomeHwyh 20:11, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
It turns out someone else had this issue too. I think I fixed it by doing this. TheAwesomeHwyh 20:19, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
It looks like it works! Glad I could help, and once again thanks for being so quick with your reverts. — Chevvin 20:26, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
No problem, and thanks! TheAwesomeHwyh 20:28, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Removed change from Armed Forces of Bosnia and Hercegovina

I made one slight alteration to a wiki regarding Bosnia's Armed Forces. I changed the word "Army" to "Armed Forces" as this is the correct term per the Oxford Concise English Dictionary (a combined Armed Forces is never addressed as an Army. This is linguistically and grammatically incorrect as A combined Armed Forces is a nations whole Armed Forces, an Army is but a nations ground forces. It is also deeply insulting to address non-army service personnel as army members). As such, it does not need a citation. It is already part of the English language. As such, please put my correction back. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.13.80.218 (talk) 21:42, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Sorry. I was using a semi-automated tool to do anti-vandalism work and I must've accidentally reverted yours. I have put it back. TheAwesomeHwyh 21:48, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Bird sanctuary copy and pastes

Hi. Do you know what's going on with all these bird sanctuary copy and pastes and how did you find them? --kingboyk (talk) 01:55, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi. It seems to be some sort of class project that keeps happening. I used this search. I would welcome any help- seeing the number I think it might take me an hour to tag them all! See also: the SPI report. TheAwesomeHwyh 01:58, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Goodness. At least we don't have to worry about SPI - from the link you gave me:
> Finally, there's no way I can justify the time to run a check on this many accounts given the lack of damage being done. You're welcome to block any accounts you wish if you think it's warranted, but unless something changes, this should not be handled at SPI.
I'll get a few more deleted for you this evening but I'll be off to bed soon. If you find any accounts which need to be blocked, drop me a line.
Thanks for the quick and helpful reply! --kingboyk (talk) 02:04, 23 January 2020 (UTC) (edit conflict)
Maybe a bot should be set up to automatically tag pages with the word "Ranganathittu" in them for deletion. Though, there might be false positives, like this page! I think there might have been a WP:AN/I discussion but I'm currently too busy tagging all these pages for deletion to find it. TheAwesomeHwyh 02:11, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Tagging isn't strictly necessary, really; you could just find a friendly admin to trawl through the list and delete them (that's not an offer ;)).
I've done a few more - the slow part is checking the user contribs to ensure that it's valid for U5. --kingboyk (talk) 02:22, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Yeah. But the problem is these pages keep coming in waves, so even with all this tagging I'm doing, if no one else tags/deletes these pages, by next year there might 400 more of them, maybe even more! Also, I'm currently looking for any other sanctuary names that might be edited like this, will update if I find any. TheAwesomeHwyh 02:27, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
I think I tagged them all. I still haven't found that other name, though. TheAwesomeHwyh 02:53, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
You tagged one which listed some other sanctuary names but it's gone now ;) This one I have open now might help:

Success! I already found one. TheAwesomeHwyh 03:05, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Yet another. TheAwesomeHwyh 03:17, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
There's also this one, but it seems very rare for the articles to pop up there. TheAwesomeHwyh 03:20, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

More with this. TheAwesomeHwyh 18:54, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Woah. It's been a few days and I decided to just search for "bird sanctuary". Some false positives, but there's hundreds more of the articles. Wow. TheAwesomeHwyh 13:50, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
There was also an earlier discussion a few months back on my userpage. That's where I got the search to find them. There might also be others, I remember some of them using a different bird sanctuary but I can't find that. TheAwesomeHwyh 02:01, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

Hello again. When you encounter promotional edits in userspace where the username matches the name of the entity being promoted, can you please tag as G11 rather than U5? That makes my job a little easier as I don't have to clear the deletion reason box and then select G11. You might also want to report the username to WP:UAA, although a good admin ought to catch the username when they process the CSD.

(I'm referring to User:Mindsmediaads and User:SalechaHomes/sandbox; both pages have been deleted and the users blocked). Cheers! --kingboyk (talk) 18:04, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

@TheAwesomeHwyh: When I look at your edits, I notice that most have a "TW" next to them. What does that mean? Any insight appreciated, King of Scorpions 21:26, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

It means Twinkle, a popular tool that helps people make edits. I usually use it to tag articles for speedy deletion. TheAwesomeHwyh 01:58, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello TheAwesomeHwyh,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

On 17 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when the developers of Superhot noticed Grace Bruxner's "cool frog game", they were "like 'hmmm... what if..... money?????'" You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

American Banjo Museum

Hi,

I spent some time working over the citation needed tags in American Banjo Museum. I'm not fully done, but am for the moment. I am sending you this to see if my ref’s meet the tag removal on thise points. ThanksJacqke (talk) 22:41, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

I couldn't say, I don't know much about banjo's (or kazoos). My main concern with the article is most of it isn't even focused on the museum; but on the history of banjos themselves. A lot of that should be removed or moved to other articles. TheAwesomeHwyh 23:51, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
I agree with that. Unfortunately, the banjo article has nothing ready to link to. Probably a large chunk of what I’ve just writer should be dropped into the history section there, and I can focus in the instruments. I appreciate you’re having glanced at the article. Jacqke (talk) 00:13, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Appreciation

The user: User:King_of_Scorpions has been blocked as a sock and I just wanted you to know that I noticed your efforts with helping a supposedly 'new' user with your mentorship. They asked for help on my talk page (now removed) and I too find this turn of events to be very disappointing. So yeah, just wanted to thank you for your contributions on Wikipedia and the time you spent trying with a 'new' user. Best wishes! -=Troop=- (talk) 11:57, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

  • I'd just like to echo the above. I'm sure, like me, you guessed he was a sock, but it's hard without concrete proof as there's always a chance it's a genuine new editor. Please don't let it put you off mentoring other new editors. Keep up the good work. Giano (talk) 15:12, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Wow... I honestly didn't suspect that. They were "learning" very fast but it was always in areas I had mentioned to them so I thought they were just like, reading a lot or something... I feel pretty stupid for not suspecting something was fishy, but I guess I was so excited to be helping out someone I just didn't stop to think about it, or something... Is there a WP:SPI page on them? I couldn't find one. TheAwesomeHwyh 17:41, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Don’t you dare “feel pretty stupid.” It’s only cynical old curmudgeons like me who struggle to accept that anyone is ever that refreshingly keen, nice and polite. He’s the stupid one because he got caught. Giano (talk) 20:44, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Giano. TheAwesomeHwyh 21:17, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
I didn't want to say anything in case I was wrong (and I hoped I was), but there was a reason I watchlisted his/her page (that's I how noticed the mentorship thread here). It happened to me with User:Chergles, like ten years ago. Disappointing. You always want to assume good faith, but WP:DUCK is a thing, too. Like Giano and Trooper1005 said, your work is appreciated. Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi TheAwesomeHwyh, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello TheAwesomeHwyh,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Sandbox

How do I make a sandbox? The Lord of Falafel (talk) 19:43, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

At the top right corner of Wikipedia, to the right of the "Log out" and "Contributions" buttons, you should see a link that says "Sandbox". Click on that. TheAwesomeHwyh 17:15, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Prep 7

Hi, I don't know if you noticed, but we're running a person image in the previous set, Prep 6. When a new set opens up, please move this and choose something else. (We try to vary the image hooks among people/buildings/plants/paintings/graphs, etc.) Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:23, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Ah, thanks. I'm going to work on prep area two now, seeing as prep area one uses a image about a typeface, I'll try to use a photo of a person in prep two, so that it's not two photos of inanimate objects in a row. TheAwesomeHwyh 16:49, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

A Dobos torte for you!

7&6=thirteen () has given you a Dobos torte to enjoy! Seven layers of fun because you deserve it.

To give a Dobos torte and spread the WikiLove, just place {{subst:Dobos Torte}} on someone else's talkpage, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.

Prep 2

Hi, please try not to put U.S. hooks side by side. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:47, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Where did I do that? TheAwesomeHwyh 18:48, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Oh, you just moved it to the quirky! Sorry I was quick on the draw. Keep going! Best, Yoninah (talk) 18:49, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Ah, okay! I thought you were talking about when I moved it to the quirky. TheAwesomeHwyh 18:50, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Okay, I finished the prep. Does it look good to you? TheAwesomeHwyh 19:17, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Yes! Yoninah (talk) 20:32, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi again, I was thinking of promoting some hooks. Are you working on both Prep 4 and Prep 5 right now? Yoninah (talk) 13:10, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Yep! If you want, I can stop working on prep 4 so that you can do it. TheAwesomeHwyh 13:11, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks, I will. BTW could you promote Template:Did you know nominations/Carlshof Institutions to the reserved slot in Prep 3? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 13:12, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Done. TheAwesomeHwyh 13:15, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, but the ALT0b was the one that was approved. Sorry I didn't strike the rest. Yoninah (talk) 13:17, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, fixed. TheAwesomeHwyh 13:18, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on User:Smenehkebedesekela/sandbox. I do not think that User:Smenehkebedesekela/sandbox fits any of the speedy deletion criteria  because This seems to be an attempt to solicit collaboration on Wikipedia articles, along with the approved "brief biographical information" mentioned in Wikipedia:user pages, and so is not "unrelated to Wikipedia's purposes". If you wish, you may try using the simple proposed deletion (PROD) process, or the full articles for deletion (AfD) process, instead, if this was an article, or another proces such as MfD or XfD as appropriate. New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello TheAwesomeHwyh,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello TheAwesomeHwyh,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
