Since we have a temporary reprieve from the developers, let's undo my fix to the warning module for now to get auto-reload back. Then we can clean up the API usage while not in a panic. Please go ahead and copy my ARV update above since that one is actually better than the original. You might want to take a look at my modifications in User:Tcncv/twinklewarnTest.js this diff shows changes from your version and this diff shows changes from the live version. I converted the jquery call to use the morebits Wikipedia.api class (which fixed page refresh), eliminated an unneeded API call, added API parameters for edit conflict detection, and restored the original tab indentation. It currently works very similarly to the original, but does not use the more complicated wikibits Wikipedia.wiki class. I think its a clean version, but my only concern is that the previously used Wikipedia.wiki has some extra functionality that I haven't fully analyzed and will be absent in the new version. -- Tom N (tcncv) talk/contrib 04:43, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Need help on editing Wilbert Rideau page

Dear Tom,

I tried to correct misinformation on the Wilbert Rideau page (I was blocked a couple of months ago for doing this incorrectly.)

My problem is this: another editor finds newspaper reports that are vague or incorrect (this happens) and cites them, thereby creating false and misleading information on the page.

I tried to correct misinformation about the George Polk Awards (under Prison Journalism Section), and while the edits show up as the latest revisions on the editing page, they do not show up on the Read page that everyone sees when they go to Wikipedia.

I am trying to correct, in particular, that Rideau won an American Bar Association award by himself, and I have cited a contemporaneous source for it. Obviously, the source closest in time to the event is going to be correct. Moreover, I have cited the book written by Billy Sinclair himself, who also acknowledges Rideau won the award by himself.

As for the Polk Awards, Sinclair and Rideau shared the Special Reporting category, not the award. Again, this is detailed in Sinclair's own book, though his advocate, WhisperToMe, keeps wanting to cite imprecise sources. It is also detailed in Rideau's book, but I haven't cited that since it seems better to cite sources other than the subject of the article.

I am asking for help in this because I do not know why the edit I made about the American Bar Association award was accepted and put on the Read page, but the other edits were not (even though, as I said, in the Edit History it appears that they were added.)

I have almost no time to deal with this, but feel confident that my work, though properly sourced, will not be accepted or will be Undone.

I am also going to ask someone for help in trying to restore the categories on the page. Everything except Rideau's memoir that is under Books and Compilations properly belongs under Prison Journalism, where it was originally, since it was done while he was in prison and is about prison. The same is true of everything listed under "Other Works" -- all of it journalist done while he was in prison and about prison. However, I do not have time to address that now.

Tom is on an extended break. However, I do some work with him and perhaps I can help. It seems that you are having problems with both the technical aspects of performing edits as well as content disputes with other editors. You should first practice more with how to edit an article before attempting to actually change the content. This is because in many cases, your edits have been undone merely due to formatting errors you accidentally introduced. You are getting pretty close.

The first problem is that we have been having some technically difficulties the last few months that sometimes causes a small lag between the time you save an edit and the time it is visible. In most cases, you can just reload the page and your edit will be there. In a few cases, you may need to bypass your browser cache, which is normally done by holding down the shift key as you click the reload icon. If you don't get an error when you save a page, your edits are in the system somewhere. The second technique you should practice is checking the page history, which is done by clicking on the "History" menu on the upper right of the page. There you can see all changes to the article, including your own edits and the reasons why someone may have later undone your edits. In some cases, I see that you have pasted the entire displayed text of the article into the edit box. This is an incorrect technique as it destroys all formatting on the page. You must always start with what is in the edit box and make incremental changes. To help you practice, I've created a copy of the article for you to experiment with at User:Eye Smith/Wilbert Rideau. You can do anything you like with it.

Once you know how to edit, you can then deal with how to resolve any content disputes. If any editor undoes one of your changes, you should immediately start a discussion on the article talk page to resolve the issue. If you are correct, others will support you in making the change. Don't repeat the same edit again without first discussing it. It may take a few days for other editors to respond. Just take your time, the wiki isn't on fire. If you do make a mistake, just apologize and try to fix it if you can. We encourage everyone to always assume good faith on the part of others. However, if your good faith attempts are causing damage to Wikipedia, they will be undone and you may be blocked temporarily if it looks like it will keep happening.

It is also useful when starting out to make smaller incremental changes spaced in time a bit instead of one big one. This will allow others to undo only whatever might be controversial while your other edits will remain.

When you leave a message on a talk/discussion page (they mean the same thing), all you need to do is place ~~~~ at the end. It's not necessary to type out your name. You can instead click the signature icon, which does the same thing, but only do it once. You can practice this on your own talk page. You can also feel free to cleanup your talk page whenever you like.

WhisperToMe (talk · contribs) has offered you some good advice, but I'm sure that some of it is confusing. For example, telling you not to use IMDb as a reference without saying why. If you don't understand something, just ask someone. In this case, they would point you to WP:RS/IMDB for an explanation.

MSU Interview

Dear Tcncv,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Hello Phanihup,

There are no firm rules for analyzing complex queries. Many times you may need to consider the parts of a query in a different order than they are written. Often, there are many ways to write queries that do the same thing. Some forms may be easier to understand than others. I find it helpful to start by reformatting and indenting the query to make it easier to read and understand. I have done that below.

	/* Query 1 */
	Select e.ename
	from employee e
	where exists(
		select 'x'
		from emp_company c
		where e.ename = c.ename
		and exists(
			select 'x'
			from company m
			where c.cname = m.cname
			and m.city = 'bombay'
		)
	);

I found the above hard to understand and harder to explain in the form provided, so I modified this query to use "IN" instead of "EXISTS" to define the relationships.

	/* Query 1 modified */
	Select e.ename
	from employee e
	where e.ename in (
		select c.ename
		from emp_company c
		where c.cname in (
			select m.cname
			from company m
			where m.city = 'bombay'
		)
	);

Now I can interpret the query from the inside out:

1. Find all the companies with city = Bombay (second nested query).
2. Find all the employees who work at any of those companies (first nested query).
3. Include those employee names in the results (top level query).

The result is a list of all employees who work in Bombay. The query can also be written without using nested queries.

	Select distinct e.ename
	from company m
	join emp_company c on c.cname = m.cname
	join employee e on e.ename = c.ename
	where m.city = 'bombay';

This should provide the same results. Note that because an employee might work for more than one company, I have added "distinct" to prevent listing any employee more than once.

Query 2 can be reformatted as follows. I have also also added the missing "company" table reference.

For this query, it is better to consider the second nested query before the first nested query. This is how I interpret this query:

1. Consider each employee record.
2. For each employee record, get a list of associated companies using the emp_company table (second nested query).
3. For each associated company, get the company's city (first nested query).
4. If the employee's city matches any of the cities for the associated companies, include that employee in the results.

Just curious if, since you first removed the call sign meaning on December 31, 2011‎, calling it a "prank" (thought first calling it that on April 1, 2008), if you had bothered to look up the sources for this before removing? Remember, the BURDEN of proof is on you, not me. You want sources, you gotta get 'em.

In your 2008 post on the WTAR talk page, you claimed you were a "47 year resident of [the area]". If you still live in Hampton Roads today, that would make you a 52 year resident. I respect your continued contributions, but I believe you have WP:Burden backwards. "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and is satisfied by providing a reliable source that directly supports the material" (my emphasis). The "We tow and repair" assertion did not and never did have a source citation. WTAR got those calls on July 15, 1997. I would check the Virginian Pilot, on microfiche of course, about a month before that date and go from there.

Just to kinda add to your BURDEN, you may remember back on April 2, 2008, you changed the callsign meaning, but didn't add a reference. You changed it back from "We Tow and Repair" to "Tidewater Area" several times. It's your BURDEN to prove which is the correct callsign meaning. If it was just one person saying it was one thing, unsourced, that would be a different story. But you have repeatedly said it is "Tidewater Area" without source.

Just to add, before you say I'm the one who added the "We Tow and Repair" callsign meaning, it was actually User:RealDeal4u back on May 11, 2006. I didn't start Wikipedia until that August. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 07:19, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

I've actually got an answer directly from the "Austrian Federal Ministry of Health" regarding the controversy on the usage of "0" (zero, number) vs "O" (oh, letter) about the blood types; they confirm the original terminology used by dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1901 for the classification is "0" (Zero); and the "O" (oh) variation is a probable mistake due to the similar shape between the number 0 and the letter O. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Tcncv. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Tcncv.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Guideline and policy news

• A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Indefinite Semi-Protection

Hi, seven years ago you protected Emma Watson indefinitely. She got a teen choice award in 2017, so this might be still necessary. However, two editors decline to replace ''The Queen of the Tearling'' by [[The Queen of the Tearling]] arriving in an unclaimed territory between WP:3O (2 vs.1 are already 3 opinions) and WP:SEMI ("nor should it be used to privilege registered users over unregistered users in (valid) content disputes" ). Maybe the last bullet of WP:ROUGH is applicable: The only way to determine if ongoing semi-protection is still necessary is to remove the protection and see if the vandalism resumes at previous levels. –2.247.247.18 (talk) 07:41, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Why have I received this message? All administrators are receiving it. What prompted you to send this message? Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account. What do I need to do? Only to follow the instructions in this message. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites). Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable). Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers. How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)? You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Minor fixes to userscripts

Hey Tcncv, it looks like you've got some user scripts in use by others that have bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group.
