Hi. I see you marked Barzun not ready for recent deaths. But the article has indeed been updated with six new sentences or subordinate sentences and almost 3,000 bytes. It is hard to see the additions in the diff given the formatting changes as well. For convenience, I have quoted all six sentences along with the diff to compare at the nom,here. - I think more users have a standard 1280 x 800 resolution than my 1366 x 768, so I'm going to defer with you for what looks better (I wasn't exactly confident with the decision, since I wasn't 100% sure of my screen resolution at the time). - It wasn't a personal attack any more than my original "squeamish" remark was a personal attack. I was commenting that as a community we should not be squeamish about providing our readers with an honest, accurate and fully sourced headline rather than the ambiguous one currently listed. That you appear to be over sensitive to valid criticism and do not like your decisions to be challenged or drawn attention to is a problem that the community will have to live with, I suppose. - Two things:
- First, don't bite the hand that feeds you. I specially requested an alternate suggestion, after (unnecessarily, really) agreeing with you that the blurb needs to be changed. And you responded by calling me squeamish. Sorry, but why the hell do you expect me to help you after that? And why did I ever have to, on a volunteer project where hundreds of other people could just as easily make the same change?
- Second, don't play dumb. I did not remove your "squeamish" remark. But your suggestion that me being American had anything to do with not submitting to your request (esp. when I provided the actual reason) or that Ks0stm being American had anything to do with posting the Hostess item is baseless, irrelevant, and pure insult. That you appear unable to tell the difference between a productive comment and a gratuitous insult is a problem that the community will have to live with, I suppose. -- tariqabjotu14:07, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- Part of the problem here is that you insist that my original use of the word squeamish was deliberately aimed at you. As I stated above, it was a essentially a community-wide remark, "There is no reason to be squeamish here" inferring that we, the community, must not feel a need to dumb down the blurb. Many editors agreed. You, as the acting Admin., have clearly felt personally targeted and I apologise that my lack of precision has led you to that interpretation. Don't get hung up on the American thing - other editors in the cake debate raised the U.S. centric argument, not me. I simply pointed out that the brand and products means very little, if anything, outside of the U.S. I shouldn't have added the American Admin. jibe that you removed, it was an attempt to stir up more interest in the Hamas headline - it plainly failed to do so. I replaced the caption in the picture of Nisantasi. Those are really (for the Turks, of course) New Year's Eve decorations. When I came to Istanbul the first time during that time (about 10 years ago) I was astonished about those decoration, which are overall in the city: I asked my friends why they were celebrating Xmas, although they are Muslim. They told me that they were celebrating the new year. I replied that this could have been true for the lights, but surely not for the Xmas tree. They explained me that the Xmas tree is an old Prototurkish custom used to celebrate the peak of winter, and that from Siberia through Scandinavia has been adopted by the European. - Tariq, I have promised myself I won't read, or post to ANI, so I can't support you there; but I want you to know I very much respect your decision to pull this, and the fact that you did so in the face of significant opposition increases the respect I have for it. It demonstrates quite a bit of careful thought, and clue, which is more valuable than gold around here. Perhaps when people realize we've had to revdel the shooter's name from the article, which is actually apparently still in some doubt, they will come around. Interestingly, I saw some of the Facebook posts from the misnamed person (on Twitter) and thought they must have been hoaxes as I couldn't believe the media could be so incompetent as to repeat an incorrect name so many times. Well, apparently they are. And to our credit, we were just reflecting what the sources said. (Perhaps even the police initially said the wrong name.) - Yeah, I understand why it happened, but it is an example of what can happen when we rush too fast to put something up on the main page. I'm probably a minority of one by now, but I still wouldn't have posted this for a while longer. An ITN section on the main page of an encyclopedia is trying to do two things at the same time: be encyclopedic, and be current. In the immediate aftermath of something like this, I would say it is impossible to do both, and when you can't do both, encyclopedic should win out over current. Still, in spite of my disappointment at us moving too fast, at least the situation was definitely improved by your action. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:55, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
