Pater noster

Evidently you failed to read the page File:Paternoster etc ngram.jpg before deleting it. Yesterday I asked on a Q&A website for information about Google's permission policies. I found it and edited the file's summary section, replacing what I'd had before with the Google permission and its source.

From my post about that in the appropriate location, Wikipedia:Media copyright questions#Google n-gram chart:

However, none of the listed copyright status descriptions match it, so I am asking here for the help of a more experienced editor. - the file did have proper permission
- and the permission, and its source, were properly recorded in the Summary
kindly restore the file as it was.

1) I've just checked the image's summary page after deletion, and there was not a license on it at all. Your comments are still there, but without a license being included (CC-by, PD, etc) the image was not in line with our policies and should have been deleted. So I deleted it.

2) Since Google does not release their content under a specific license, they still own the copyright, and therefore we cannot use it. For example, we only allow media to be uploaded if it can have derivatives made of it. (That's a difference in what Wikipedia sees as free, and what US copyright says is free). Google's statement says nothing about allowing derivatives. Until and unless Google releases this data under a specific free license, we cannot host it. There is consensus there. The consensus was the image was too large. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean that it isn't consensus. You do not get to unilaterally overrule that because you don't like it. And lets be realistic. What reason would the image need to be larger than what is seen in the infobox? If someone wants to see a bigger version of the image, they can click it and then the source for the image to get a bigger version. That way we aren't hosting any more than we need to. His suggestion, that non-free images have their upload size limited by the default width of the thumbnail, regardless of user-preferences is not supported by the wider Wikipedia community. If you believe that all non-free images should be 220px in width, you should explain that extreme position rather than closing discussions. - hahnch e n 20:33, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

You are so blinded by a number that you aren't paying attention to anything and accusing me of things that just are not true. Please take a step back and look at the discussion again. The consensus of the discussion is that the image could & should be smaller. You don't agree with that, and that's okay, but it doesn't change the consensus. You want to keep the image the same. The consensus is against that. Now for the actual size of the image, there was no consensus for that. It was barely discussed in that discussion. Just because there was no definite consensus for a specific size does not mean we get to ignore the consensus that the image needs to be smaller. So, I took the discussion at hand, its consensus, our policies (specifically WP:NFC and WP:NFCC) and determined that the best size, which would be within the consensus to be smaller, and within the rule of thumb to 0.1 megapixels, would be what it is actually rendered at in the article. So with the consensus and the polices I implemented the outcome. And I understand that you don't agree with it. That's cool. We can discuss that all day. But you don't get to overrule it just because you don't like it. You don't get to accuse me of things that I haven't done because you don't like the outcome. Using their data may be allowed. Our policies only allow for things that are released under a free license. This includes being allowed derivative works. Nowhere on their site do they allow you to modify the data and the make an image. They wouldn't want that because then it could be wrong. If you are going to contact the company, you need to get them to release the data or an image of the data under a free license. I'm aware of this, I guided already companies through the process. I'm just a little bit concerned how easy content is dismissed, with a super short discussion (beside, there was no time for me to answer before the discussion was already closed) even in cases when the company obviously wants the free usage. cheers Shaddim (talk) 09:27, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

I can understand your concern, but the discussion was open for 16 days. It only has to be opened for 7 days (as it is with most file discussions) so I wouldn't really classify it as premature or short. Italian euro coins

I happened to be looking at the article for Italian euro coins and I noticed some of the images (e.g. File:Eur.it.005.gif) were deleted by you as non-free, whereas others (e.g. File:Eur.it.002.gif) have a fair use rationale template. Was there some reason for this discrepancy? It looks like these images were uploaded as a set by @Snappy so if the deleted coins can actually be used under the fair use policy, that user might be able to re-upload them. 24.130.189.187 (talk) 16:15, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - June 2015

Welcome to the GA Cup! The competition is about to begin! Before you all start reviewing nominations and reassessments we want to make sure you understand the following:

This is a friendly competition so we don't want any cheating/breaking of the rules. However, if you do believe someone is going against the rules, notify the judges. All the rules are listed here.
If you are a new editor or new to reviewing Good article nominations, it is imperative that you read the 4 essays/guides listed under FAQ #4. If you do not understand something, ask a judge for clarification ASAP!
The competition is not entirely about who can review the most nominations. Per the "Scoring" page, there is different criteria in which you can earn more points. Theoretically, you could review 10 nominations and have 80 points but another user could have reviewed 5 nominations and have 100 points. Yes, we want you to review as many nominations as you can as this will greatly increase the number of points you earn, but you must also keep in mind that every single review will be looked over by a judge. If we find that you are "rubber-stamping" (in other words, the review is not complete but you still passed/failed the article) you may be disqualified without warning. The same applies with reassessments. If you just say that the article should be delisted or kept with no explanation, points will not be awarded.
Remember, to submit Good article reviews and reassessments on your submissions page (Some of you have not created your submissions page yet. Only reviews/reassessments submitted on your submissions page can earn points. If you participated in the 2014-2015 GA Cup, you still need to re-create your submissions page.). Detailed instructions on how to submit reviews and reassessments can be found under the "Submissions" page. Ask a judge if you need clarification.

Also, rather than creating a long list on what to remember, make sure you have read the "Scoring", "Submissions", and "FAQ" pages.

Now some of you are probably wondering how on earth the rounds will work.

The rounds will work in a similar fashion as the previous competition, with the exception of the first round. Round 1 will have everyone compete in one big pool. Depending on the final number of participants after sign-ups close, a to-be-determined number of participants will move on (highest scorers will move on) to Round 2. We guarantee that the top 15 will move on (this number may change), so make sure you aim for those top positions! Moving on to Round 2, participants will be split into pools. The pools will be determined by a computer program that places participants by random. More details regarding Round 2 will be sent out at the end of Round 1.

It is important to note that the GA Cup will run on UTC time, so make sure you know what time that is for where you live! On that note, the GA Cup will start on July 1 at 0:00:01 UTC; Round 1 will end on July 29 at 23:59:59 UTC; Round 2 will commence on August 1 at 0:00:01 UTC. All reviews must be started after or on the start time of the round. If you qualify for Round 2 but do not complete a review before the end of Round 1, the review can be carried over to Round 2; however that review will not count for Round 1. Prior to the start of the the second round, participants who qualify to move on will be notified.

Finally, if you know anyone else that might be interesting in participating, let them know! Sign-ups close on July 15 so there is still plenty of time to join in on the action!

If you have any further questions, contact one of the judges or leave a message here.

After sign-ups close, check the Pools page as we will post the exact number of participants that will move on to the next round. Because this number will be determined past the halfway mark of Round 1, we encourage you to aim to be in the top 15 as the top 15 at the end of the round are guaranteed to move on.

Advice for improving an article

Hi TLSuda! I hope all is well -- I am reaching out to you because you were the GA reviewer for Genes, Brain and Behavior, and I am working on another article of an academic journal that I hope to bring up to GA status. The article I am working on is The Urban Lawyer, which is the the largest circulating government law journal in the world. There are very few indepent reliable sources that talk about the journal, and I have included everything I could find from a reliable source. I have tried to follow the model of Genes, Brain and Behavior as much as possible, but if you have any advice for how to improve things, I would certainly appreciate it! File Deletions

You recently posted a message on my talk page in response to the many remarks I have made in regard to the MANY files uploaded by me over time that have been deleted from the site. The most recent casualty has File:Robot Carnival.JPG, which I had uploaded nine years ago. This was done by User:Mika1h on July 4, 2015, when he up loaded an image of the theatrical poster for the film Robot Carnival and replaced it for the title logo image I had originally uploaded. Looking at this, I know he was not acting maliciously -- a poster for the film is a more appropriate representation than a title frame. Like you, I "had over a hundred deleted" -- I have kept count. I thank you for taking the time to message me about this matter; yes, it has always concerned me greatly. I ultimately came to feel useless here. The barnstar that had been presented to me a while back by JamieJones has come to look "old and tarnished" like the Bronze Star that had been awarded to the character Mayday in the movie Planes: Fire & Rescue. I'm not really capable of not taking it personally -- I apologize for that. But I had exceptionally good feelings about the many contributions I had submitted. So when the number of files being put to the guillotine began to pile up -- it really hurt. I ultimately had to come to the conclusion that the uploading of image files by me would be a futile effort. For that reason,it has now been years since any image file has been uploaded by me. Most likely I will never do so again. I have tweaked some articles in the intervening years, but really nothing significant. That's where I stand now. Kinetic Depth Effect Image Deletion

Please reinstate this image ... there was ZERO reason to delete it. I personally own the image and put it in public domain for wikipedia to use. Zuchinni one (talk) 04:06, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

There was a very good reason to delete it. That is why there was a discussion about it: Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2015_July_4#File:An_Example_of_The_Kinetic_Depth_Effect.gif. You say it was an image that you own and put in the public domain, but you uploaded it as a non-free file. As a non-free file, it is replaceable and therefore it fails WP:NFCC#1. On the image's page, you claim the copyright holder is Shai Azoulai and that it was originally published in the Journal of Vision (article: "Hemispheric Differences in the Kinetic Depth Effect"). Are you Azoulai? If so you should follow the directions at WP:CONSENT and include proof that the image was created by you. Then it would be restored. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 01:07, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) wins the prize for first place and the FP prize for 330 featured pictures in the final round.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions) wins the prize for second place and the DYK prize for 160 did you knows in the final round (310 in all rounds).

West Virginian (submissions) wins the prize for fourth place
Calvin999 (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
Rationalobserver (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
Harrias (submissions) wins a final 8 prize and the FL prize for 11 featured lists.
Rodw (submissions) wins the most prizes: a final 8 prize, the GA prize for 41 good articles, and the topic prize for a 13-article good topic and an 8-article featured topic, both in round 3.
ThaddeusB (submissions) wins the news prize for the most news articles in round 3.

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. Mercer Wordmark Issues

I apologize in advance if this is the incorrect format or forum to raise this issue. I'm very much new to Wikipedia. I have been tasked with keeping Mercer's wikipedia entry updated and accurate, and I have been made aware that the wordmark you uploaded and added to the official Mercer wiki entry is incorrect. @Maconmatt: Hello Matt from Macon (I assume). I believe you are talking about the logo on the University's article. If you believe a new logo should be uploaded, I'd recommend you request through our Files for Upload process: Wikipedia:Files_for_upload. Be sure to include a link to the correct logo. Also, based on what you've said (you've "been tasked") you might want to read our article on Conflict of Interest: WP:COI and make sure that you are following that guideline. Request re:Image on page Akillezz

Yesterday the image on that page (Akillezz) was deleted. I had been working with the publicist who in turn was working with the artist and the copyright holder Mark DeLong. Just today we received notice that Mr. DeLong has submitted documentation to Wikimedia Commons granting a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International free license. the ticket number from Wikimedia Commons Permissions is: ticket:2015120210020861 I request that your restore the photo permanently, or if that is not possible, please restore it for a temporary period pending processing of the documentation by Permissions... thank you --Mstomasik (talk) 19:16, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

@Mstomasik: As soon as the permissions by the OTRS team, the image will be reinstated. We don't host files even temporarily because this can take time and if the correct permissions are not received we are hosting copyright material against our policies. Science Direct image permissions?

Science Direct users may not "Display any copyrighted images or pictures which are in Elsevier works without permission of Elsevier" Is there a mechanism for requesting permission from Elsevier? Is there a general statement from them that permission generally will not be granted, or generally it will be granted? Is there someone at Elsevier I may contact for permission if this comes up? (Images, IMO, are SO important to making a story clear - so many people are visual learners, and if we can use images, I prefer to use them when we can.) Thanks! WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Deleted image question

@TLSuda: Hi. The image The Block Fans vs Faves logo.png was deleted in September 2014 for non-use as per CSD F5. However, if this image were to be undeleted, would it be acceptable for it to be reused in the article The Block (season 8) as the image in question is the logo of the season in the article. Or would this break policy? I'm a bit confused and would appreciate some guidance before I ask for the image (and those from other seasons of this TV program) to be undeleted. Sevcoteehee seems to be claiming Wikipedia talk:Non-free content/Archive 63#Thoughts on a new NFC#UUI item voids any consensus based upon No. 17 of WP:NFCC#UUI, and has used to same reasoning to re-add non-free use rationales to File:India FA.svg and re-add the file to India women's national football team despite Explicit's close at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2016 February 6#File:India FA.svg as well as re-add non-free rationales and images to many other files and articles, including trying to combine multiple uses into a single rationale like here and here which violates WP:NFCC#10c. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

Elsevier ScienceDirect - I've been very inactive

You approved my Elsevier ScienceDirect Health & Life Sciences account several months ago. However, I then got a new job and two other projects that have been consuming my time. I have only cited Elsevier material twice in all that time, and I have not made many edits. I would like to keep my Elsevier ScienceDirect account, but if there are other more active users who would like an account, and if there are no more available (the number of accounts is limited, right?), I feel it only right to offer to give my account up for someone else. I do not know when I will have time to be more active - possibly in May or June, when my new temp job ends, but I can't be sure. WikiCup 2016 May newsletter

Round 2 is over and 35 competitors have moved on to Round 3.

Round 2 saw three FAs (two by Cas Liber (submissions) and one by Montanabw (submissions)), four Featured Lists (with three by Calvin999 (submissions)), and 53 Good Articles (six by Worm That Turned (submissions) and five each by Hurricanehink (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), and MPJ-DK (submissions)). Eleven Featured Pictures were promoted (six by Adam Cuerden (submissions) and five by Godot13 (submissions)). One Featured Portal, Featured Topic and Good Topic were also promoted. The DYK base point total was 1,135. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) scored 265 base points, while The C of E (submissions) and MPJ-DK (submissions) each scored 150 base points. Eleven ITN were promoted and 131 Good Article Reviews were conducted with MPJ-DK (submissions) completing a staggering 61 reviews. Two contestants, Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Cas Liber (submissions), broke the 700 point mark for Round 2.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, TLSuda. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

WikiCup 2016 November newsletter: Final results

The final round of the 2016 WikiCup is over. Congratulations to the 2016 WikiCup top three finalists:

First Place - Cas Liber (submissions)
Second Place - MPJ-DK (submissions)
Third Place - Adam Cuerden (submissions)

In addition to recognizing the achievements of the top finishers and everyone who worked hard to make it to the final round, we also want to recognize those participants who were most productive in each of the WikiCup scoring categories:

Featured Article – Cas Liber (actually a three-way tie with themselves for two FAs in each of R2, R3, and R5).
Good Article – MPJ-DK had 14 GAs promoted in R3.
Featured List – Calvin999 (submissions) produced 2 FLs in R2
Featured Pictures – Adam Cuerden restored 18 images to FP status in R4.
Featured Portal – SSTflyer (submissions) produced the only FPO of the Cup in R2.
Featured Topic – Cyclonebiskit (submissions) and Calvin were each responsible for one FT in R3 and R2, respectively.
Good Topic – MPJ-DK created a GT with 9 GAs in R5.
Did You Know – MPJ-DK put 53 DYKs on the main page in R4.
In The News – Dharmadhyaksha (submissions) and Muboshgu (submissions), each with 5 ITN, both in R4.
Good Article Review – MPJ-DK completed 61 GARs in R2.

Over the course of the 2016 WikiCup the following content was added to Wikipedia (only reporting on fixed value categories): 17 Featured Articles, 183 Good Articles, 8 Featured Lists, 87 Featured Pictures, 40 In The News, and 321 Good Article Reviews. WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi TLSuda.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

WikiCup December newsletter: WikiCup 2017

On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different – monetary prizes.

For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):

First place – $200
Second & Third place – $50 each
Category prizes – $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.

Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.

After two years as a WikiCup judge, Figureskatingfan is stepping down. We thank her for her contributions as a WikiCup judge. We are pleased to announce that our newest judge is two-time WikiCup champion Cwmhiraeth.
