Copyright problem: Mohan Munasinghe

Hello. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Mohan Munasinghe, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://dsds.teriin.org/dsds2002/speakers/Munasinghe.htm http://dsds.teriin.org/2003/speakers/munasinghe.htm, and therefore a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under allowance license, then you should do one of the following:

I have also listed Munidasa Cumaratunga and Jayantha Chandrasiri for further examination. I realize that much of this was added some time ago, but given that you were notified of our copyright policies in March, 2008 and evidently continued placing material from other sites here, as suggested by the Corensearchbot notices above, I am requesting assistance in evaluating your contributions more deeply for additional concerns. If you are aware of any other articles into which you may have copied material from previously published sources, please help identify these. Very rarely does Wikipedia's copyright policy permit copying from such sources, and quite likely any such text you may have copied here will have to be removed. Copying text within Wikipedia

Just as you cannot copy text from other sources, you also cannot copy text from one Wikipedia article into a new one, unless you are the sole contributor. Wikipedia's contributors do not release their material into public domain, but license it for reuse provided that their content is attributed. Articles that infringe copyright on Wikipedia

With respect to the note that you left User:MBisanz here, the article was deleted from the space Munidasa Cumaratunga. What was deleted at Kumarathunga Munidasa was a redirect you had created which was no longer useful without the article.

You were notified of the copyright concerns with Munidasa Cumaratunga on July 3rd, at which time the article was blanked to allow interested contributors to create a new version without copyright infringement. The article was not deleted until July 12th. You had been actively editing between those dates but did not respond to copyright concerns or take any steps to create a clean version of the article. Neither did any other editor. Every version of this article in its history contained a substantial copyright problem. While I will sometimes myself rewrite articles on notable subjects where this is the case, as I did with the article you wrote for Mohan Munasinghe, this is not possible with every article. If there isn't a clean version and nobody creates one, we sometimes have no choice but to delete articles altogether. Even had you not been active at all, the articles would have been deleted after a week. However, uploading new material really shouldn't have been your priority here. I'm not sure if you understand the seriousness of this situation. You can be blocked from contributing to Wikipedia for copying material from non-free sites. That's because doing this is against the law of the United States, where Wikipedia is based. You can get Wikipedia into legal trouble doing this, and Wikipedia can't allow it. At the bottom of every edit screen, it says, "Only public domain resources can be copied without permission—this does not include most web pages or images." and "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted." In response to your note below, it isn't a question of writing your own opinion, but writing information in your own words. The law protects creative expression. The language a source uses is protected, as is the "structure" of the piece. (See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing if you want to know more.) But facts in it are not.

I'm sure nobody wants to see you blocked from contributing, and it's not by any means my intention to make you feel threatened with regards to text you've already uploaded. But I want to be sure that you understand this so you'll realize that you must not do it again. This is an important issue to Wikipedia. Material that is pasted here is removed or hidden as soon as it is discovered. Sometimes this means the whole article is instantly deleted. Sometimes a week is permitted to allow contributors a chance to write a new article. But either way, the copyrighted text must go. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 10:39, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I can help with the new article you've created on Kumarathunga Munidasa. But there should be no more copy pasting from other sites or even from Wikipedia's own pages. What we do is obtain the information from reliable sources and present them in an article. Simply put, we give it in our own words and give that source as a reference. Wikipedia takes copyright seriously, and something (even a small part) taken word to word from another source is a violation of it. You initially created this barnstar at Editing User:Svm1 63/personalbarnstar/mahasena, which resulted in an article being created in the main namespace. I assumed this was a mistake and moved it to User:Svm1 63/personalbarnstar/mahasena, and I have tagged the original page for deletion. Let me know if this was in error. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
