Harvest Moon 64

Your additions to Harvest Moon 64 are incredibly excessive. Editors are discouraged from adding tons of lists describing all facets of a game per WP:GAMEGUIDE, WP:FANCRUFT, and WP:GAMECRUFT. I will refrain from shortening the article myself for the time being, but I suggest that you re-evaluate your edits and trim away all that is non-notable and inappropriate for Wikipedia, specifically the numerous tables of game items and lengthy character biographies.--ThomasO1989 (talk) 02:53, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Hey there again. I'm glad you have taken my criticism nicely and I apologize myself if I came on too strongly. I've seen many editors over the past few years who actually insist on adding long lists, so it gets under the skin after a while. :D It is true that more information may move articles to higher classes, but the information needs to help the reader obtain a general understanding on what exactly the game is about-- how it's played, what has been said about it, how it was made. Readers often want the big picture, and it helps to imagine what the average reader would think when reading an article. Take the Wario's Woods article for example. Before I did work on it, it looked like this. The article focused too much on the details and only those familiar with the game might understand it, and it would take a while for someone else to figure out what it's about. So even though it had a good length, it was Start-class for a long time.

Looking at Harvest Moon 64 now, I would say that the article needs more references, which often boosts article quality. I also think some sections ought to be rewritten too, particularly the lead paragraphs for Gameplay, as they contain issues with POV. It feels almost like a review, especially "Most players, however, opt to restart the game from the beginning as the events become predictable and, with most or all achievements, gameplay becomes monotonous." and "For seasoned gamers who enjoy a challenge." These biased statements should be removed. If the former (or something similar) is actually mentioned in a critical review like IGN or GameSpot, then it should be moved into Reception and the review cited. As for the lists, I think they'd be best integrated into the text, but things like prices or how to obtain them should be left out. The table of vegetables, for example, can be written in as "A variety of crops can be planted and harvested, such as turnips, potatoes, and corn. Some crops begin to grow only in certain seasons, and others are capable of growing back after being harvested." though some of the rest of the section should be edited to fit in this (roughly written) statement. These are ideas off the top of my head, but that should be a good start. Good luck! --ThomasO1989 (talk) 02:04, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

At first glance, I think that Gameplay can still be condensed into one or two large sections, rather than multiple really small subsections that feel a bit cluttered. I can still sense an urge to describe how to do things or give long lists of items (a few vegetables is enough, rather than all of them; and some readers will not know what "Moonlight Stones" and "Blue Stones" are, so they're best left out) so those areas should be looked at. I'm glad you were able to get references, however GameFaqs (stated by Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources) is not considered a wholly reliable source; it's usually used for release dates. There are also some areas that have over-citing, particularly the subsections of Gameplay where single references are mentioned many times in a single paragraph (if a whole paragraph comes from one source, a single citation at the end is acceptable), and the release date, which is cited in two different areas by different sources. I do agree, however, that the article is clean enough to have the tag removed.

In Reception sections, the information is usually in two or three paragraphs, where the first usually describes the positive reviews and the second points out the negative or more mixed reviews. The third, though optional, usually contains sales information, if any is available (I must point out that VGChartz is not a reliable source for this material). The section should open with "HM64 received mixed to positive reviews" or something like that.

All in all, the article still needs work, but it's heading in the right direction. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 16:11, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Ventricina

Hi Sesamehoneytart, the Ventricina is a salami prepared inside a pig's urinary bladder, not a vesicle. I think the misunderstanding arose because in Italian bladder and vesicle are rendered with the same word "vescica". I'm going to fix this in the article. Month of year

Hi, I just thought I should let you know that Wikipedia's manual of style states that "of" should not be inserted between month and year (e.g. January of 1994; see WP:MONTH), as you have done on Megadeth. Copy edits

Hi there. Thanks for participating in the WP:GOCE backlog drive! I'm checking everyone's work, and I had a few comments on your edits to Street Fighter. There was a spot where you partially fixed a sentence. The original said, "Street Fighter II was the first one-on-one fighting game to give players a choice from a variety of player characters with different moves, an option which created hitherto unknown levels of depth and replay value for an arcade game." You changed it to "Street Fighter II is the first one-on-one fighting game to give players a choice from a variety of player characters with different moves, an option which created depth and a replay value to the arcade game." The phrasing in the last part of that is a bit awkward. Since there was a citation needed tag, I just pulled that last part completely. You also used version to describe games in a few places that weren't quite accurate, since I would distinguish versions as variations on a single game, rather than different games in the series. Otherwise, the work there looks pretty good.

Your edits to Aquilonia (Conan) have a few minor points also. You mostly fixed the tenses to present, which is great, but it looks like you may have started getting a little burnt out towards the end of the article, which I definitely understand, because you left the past tense in place in a few places. You can see the fixes I made here, although I may also have missed some myself. It's a huge article! The only other point on that article is your changing "I" to "(he)" and variations inside the quote. My instinct is that that is not the way we would want to do it, but I'm not 100% sure. I started a discussion on that here and would like to get your opinion on it. Yes, I remember that cursed Aquilonia article. That's the last time I try to go through 6000 words in one sitting. It's so strange how long and detailed the articles on fantasy and fiction are compared to nonfictional ones. The article on Optimus Prime I slogged through last September (18,000 words) that had to mention his every appearance and his actions in every transformers series (the thing has died and been brought back to life more than Kenny). I much prefer the more interesting ones, such as the Greco-Italian War or History of Miami, that actually give me pertinent knowledge germane to the real world. Wikifying

Hi Sesamehoneytart, thanks for your work on the Wikify Drive. I've been noticing a few small problems that I was hoping you could correct. First off, take a read through Template:Infobox_person/doc#Parameters to make sure you're familiar with usage guidelines. For example, in many cases you've been adding the nationality parameter inappropriately. It's also helpful to check that the information is sourced, particularly when dealing with a living person. Second, make sure you're using the correct template - Gorch Fock (author), for example, should probably use {{Infobox writer}} instead. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 14:38, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

The Pulse (WP:MED newsletter) June 2014

The first edition of The Pulse has been released. The Pulse will be a regular newsletter documenting the goings-on at WPMED, including ongoing collaborations, discussions, articles, and each edition will have a special focus. That newsletter is here.

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

• WHO's list of Essential Medicines[2]
• Neglected tropical diseases[3]
• Key diseases for medical subspecialties like: oncology, emergency medicine (list), anatomy, internal medicine, surgery, etc.

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

• Swedish
  Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
  Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
• Dutch
  Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
• Polish
  Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.

• Arabic
  The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.

Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Sesamehoneytart. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Towsend/Townsend

Hi Sesamehoneytart. Regarding your move of Daentl Townsend Siegel syndrome, the only appearance of "Daentl Towsend Siegel" in a GBooks search is a single instance, repeated in four publications, by the author Oeijord (GBooks returns two other results but searching both I couldn't find a mention of the syndrome); and GScholar yields one patent application.

"Daentl Townsend Siegel" yields 90 patents and patent applications on GScholar and the journal report that described the syndrome (cited in our article) is authored by Daentl, Townsend, Siegel et al. I think it's highly likely "Townsend" is the correct spelling. If you agree, would you consider moving it back to "Townsend"? --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 12:03, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
