Further copyright problems at Gary Lee Shaffer[edit]

Hello Rdelamater.

The new page at Gary Lee Shaffer is still such a close paraphrase of http://www.garyshafferartist.com/bio.html that I believe it constitutes copyright infringement. Has permission to use that content been submitted through OTRS? Until we have a ticket reference to confirm this, I have again blanked the content and tagged it for investigation; if permission is not supplied within a week the page is liable to be deleted again. If permission has been submitted, sincere apologies; please let me know and once verified I will remove the copyright tag. If permission has not been submitted yet but you hold the copyright to the material at http://www.garyshafferartist.com/, you can within the next week give permission for the content's reproduction on Wikipedia per the instructions set out in my last message (and at WP:IOWN).

Some advice follows if permission through OTRS has not been submitted, and you are not in a position to license the original content's reproduction on Wikipedia: In case you are unfamiliar with the idea of "close paraphrase" constituting copyright infringement, please read this page. The differences between the article text and the text at the external website are superficial; both present the same information in almost identical order and with only slight changes of phrasing. To avoid close paraphrase, you can of course read and reference the other site as a source, but you should not be looking at text from it when writing your Wikipedia article content. A very good practice is to ensure you refer to multiple sources: this not only forces you to generate content that does not simply mimic a single origin, but helps to demonstrate the subject's notability and tends to help create more balanced coverage of a subject in light of a range of opinions.

If you have any questions about this, please do ask me here or on my user talk page. It's easy to infringe copyright unintentionally, but Wikipedia must take copyright very seriously, and repeated introduction of copyright-infringing material can lead to your account being blocked. Reply[edit]

hey there Gonzoir, Thanks for the flag - I'd rather clear the article and have it available than try to scoot by the editors. I don't own the rights to the text on http://www.garyshafferartist.com/, and so I haven't submitted any permission. I edited the text again to what I see as neutral and non-copyright-infringing. Please let me know if I'm in the right direction?

thanks, Rdelamater (talk)

Thanks for the reply, Rdelamater. I'll give this a look later today. Gonzonoir (talk) 09:50, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Biographical pages[edit]

You should take the time to read Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies), as I notice you have been adding a number of biographies that don't fit the style guidelines.

Two specific things I've noticed you doing repeatedly are:

1. You should not start the page with a heading that is the name of the article. Wikipedia adds such a heading automatically.

2. You should use the fewest and most specific category tags available. For instance, if the subject of the article is American and a painter, use Category:American painters, not Category:Americans and Category:Painters.
