External LInks

Could you be more specific than just "commons gallery links belong in External link section per Manual of Style policy document"?. I have not been able to find anything relating to that. I still believe that having an unexplained external link to the photo gallery is against the external link policy. When I first saw such a link I had no idewa what it related to and I suspect that most people who are not into the finer details of Wiki as some of us editors are, would have any idea what the link refers to - hence some more information is required. What alternative explanation would you suggest? I believe information must be meaningful to users which I think is having link in the External Links, is not.Fleet Lists (talk) 23:16, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

To quote from Links to sister projects which is part of the manual of style:

Links to Wikimedia sister projects and {{Spoken Wikipedia}} should generally appear in "External links", not under "See also".

I think this is fairly clear as Commons is a wiki sister project, that it should be included under external links. From random examples British Airways, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Cunard, Gare du Nord, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, London Paddington railway station & Southern Cross railway station, they all adopt this format. Thank You - That certainly clarifies where you are coming from. To me there appears to be some conflict in the Wiki instructions in that they say in one place an explanation must be given for an External Link while in another place it states that links to sister projects must go under External links making the assumption that users understand what such links are about which is the point I keep questioning. But who am I to keep arguing the point. Strathfield is only one of about 50 stations to which I have made this change recently with more planned. So it appears I will have to back out those 50 unless I can think of some other way out. I will confer with another editor to see what his thoughts are on this. In the various examples to link to, they all use the logo for the related link while in Sydney we appear to be going away from that and use the raw link which I think is less useful than the logo.Fleet Lists (talk) 00:15, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

I gather that the policy in this section, differs from the instructions in another. Not surprising, wiki instructions often take about 10 times longer to explain what you really need to know. Wikilinks

Please note that, per WP:REPEATLINK, a link should generally appear only once in an article. There is no need for multiple links to the same article in the same list. --AussieLegend (✉) 01:02, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

As I've explained above, we don't link multiple times to the same article. Lady-class ferry is already linked in State Dockyard, it doesn't need to be linked twice more in the same list.[1][2]

That is assuming the reader knows that all vessels with the Lady prefix are of the same class. Same reason why on Forgacs Shipyard Tomago it is necessary to link the same article for each of the 9 First Fleet class ferries. WP:REPEATLINK states:

"Generally, a link should appear only once in an article, but if helpful for readers, links may be repeated in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, hatnotes, and at the first occurrence after the lead." As this is effectively a table, albeit in a less formal sense, then think it appropriate to repeat links. Rb119 (talk) 02:56, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

No, it's a list, not a table. These are two different things and we allow repeated links in tables for different reasons. The first link to Lady-class ferry is all that is necessary in a list because the article doesn't separately address each vessel. --AussieLegend (✉) 05:26, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Columns

How is this an improvement? The two columns are different lengths (5 and 14 rows) and the list looks strange because the right column is longer than the left. You're also forcing 2 reference columns, which looks strange at high resolutions. In this version the columns are different (4 and 15 rows - that's only 1 different from your version) but the left column is longer which is more conventional (humans read left-right) and the number of reference columns is dependent on the browser width, so is optimised at all resolutions. --AussieLegend (✉) 11:58, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

On my screen it was appearing as 10 and 9. Presume it is a screen resolution issue. The change made by the third editor has left it as such, so presumably this has fixed. Rb119 (talk) 08:22, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

A couple of comments/questions. 1 Should Foracs at the top of the Infobox be Forgacs? 2. The Infobox looks OK on my PC but since the introduction of the latest version the Infobox does not display correctly on my Samsung tablet. The two lines "Headquarters Carrington, New South Wales, Australia" show as one line only with the second line showing over the top of the first one, so you can not read it. Purging of Infobox options,

As a result of the purging of the infobox options, I have deleted the smartcard card information from various ferry wharves. I also changed the ADA option to disabled as the ADA option was not working - but when I was about to do the last ferry wharf, they must have reinstated it as it worked for the last wharf I did BUT instead of showing the wheelchair symbol it now shows Disabled access = Yes - the same as disabled so for consistency I changed the last wharf as well - link to the option changes is included in the comments for most changes.Fleet Lists (talk) 06:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

New format timetable references

I am in the process of changing all timetable links so that it is not necessary to have the date of each timetable in each article in which the timetable reference is present. This will make it a lot easier when new timetables are issued. Currently many locations are overlooked at such times. Today I did the first ferry one at Sydney Olympic Park as there is a new route 526 timetable as from next Sunday. Luckily at the last moment there was a change to the template concerned Template:Cite New South Wales transport timetables so that a calling article can override the timetable description present in the template. This was used for the first time for route 526 so that only route 526 is shown instead of all three routes as shown in the template. This is a big exercise which I expect will take up to another three months to complete. I will do all ferry wharfs in due course but it will take some time before they are all done. For ferries only the Parramatta ferry is supported at this point in time.Fleet Lists (talk) 08:04, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
