Re: Templates and images[edit]

Hi Ran, I've had to remove the images from the templates per WP:NFCC #9. Regards, nat.utoronto 21:31, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, regarding the images, each time an image is used a new rationale is need, so one template does not cover all the time an image is used. nat.utoronto 02:36, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have no plans to delete them, I just needed whoever uploaded them, or who ever wanted to take charge of them, to fill in the correct information. nat.utoronto 03:06, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you--I appreciate it very much. One question: why would have been written in simplified form, 108 years ago? I see written there rather than . Badagnani (talk) 15:46, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, really? The characters aren't written very nicely, so I think they were probably making a lot of instruments that day, and whoever was writing the characters didn't take a lot of time to do them beautifully. So it makes sense that they'd use a simpler form for that one. Badagnani (talk) 18:22, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

219.79.122.72 and Tibet on South Asia[edit]

This ip has been reverting a map I modified to represent South Asia. S/he is reverting this map because it is showing Tibet overlayed on the PRC. I am requesting intervention on this topic. It is clear that Tibet belongs on the page, but he is removing the map that displays Tibet. Thegreyanomaly (talk) 22:21, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

料酒王[edit]

Thanks for pinyin; another obscure food question: I'm wondering now if you can tell me about the cooking wine called 料酒王. I have a bottle of it and it includes water, huangjiu, baijiu, salt, cloves, nutmeg, and black cardamom. Thus, it's a variety of yellow-colored cooking wine infused with "sweet" spices. I don't know if this needs an article, or what to call it. Badagnani (talk) 05:59, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page featured article[edit]

Per WP:NOPRO, we don't semi-protect the main page featured article unless the vandalism is beyond extreme. The article featured on the Main Page is always "hit heavily and repeatedly" but until it reaches the point that we basically can't separate the good from the bad, it remains unprotected. Blocking one user for vandalizing is preferred to blocking all anonymous editors from participating. - auburnpilot talk 03:52, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Han Chinese[edit]

An editor has nominated Han Chinese, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Han Chinese and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:59, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:China county list[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:China county list requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

WikiProject Beijing[edit]

Hey Ran/2008! I'm currently planning the launch of the WikiProject Beijing, depending on if enough other editors would be interested in such a project. Beijing Subway Map[edit]

Hi Ran (are you the same Ran who works for the Olympics media office?!) I love your diagram of the Beijing Subway and I want to get permission to use it. How do I go about that? Obviously I would need a Hi Res, up to date version without the Wiki stamp all over it!!! You can send me a personal message on my user page: mapmark This request is really quite URGENT as I need to get the artwork to print very quickly and I've had no joy from the Beijing Subway corporation!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mapmark (talkcontribs) 12:01, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reponse Ran, your latest 2012 version is very impressive! I'm trying to get permission to reproduce the orginal official version but the BSC are just USELESS in responding to international emails! It's not for me as such but for an international company with a branch in Beijing who wish to get a proper signed agreement and print the map on their local guides and give them out to their clients. They are quite strict about making sure it is OFFICIAL map with a signed deal. Can you PM me any direct contacts you have in the Subway company? Or do you have a high-resolution photograph of the official map inside a train? Thanks once again for your time and advice. best wishes, Mark mapmark 1319 07/04/08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mapmark (talkcontribs) 11:18, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tibet[edit]

Where are you and Khoikhoi?

Now the page is blocked right after some editors did some, as I can smell, soft-POV editing, including both pushing POV and removing sourced contents. Could you please kindly take a look? Another Map for the Beijing Subway[edit]

Dear Ran, Thank you so much for your Beijing Subway Map! It is an extremely integral component to the Beijing Subway article, which has become the go-to English language resource on the subject. I wonder if it might be possible for you to create a map of only the lines that are currently in operation. Such a map might be more helpful to foreigners visiting the city who may want to print out a handy guide to take with them, without the extra information about future lines, which would not be useful until Sept. 2009 (when Line 4 opens). Also, it might be helpful to sketch in a light color in the background, the location of Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and the ring roads on the subway map, so as to help readers better orient themselves. Thank you. ContinentalAve (talk) 18:11, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

East Asian Orthography on Wikibooks[edit]

Hi Ran,

I've been doing a little bit of work on the b:Japanese Wikibook and therefore came across the East Asian Orthography book that you started to write. Unfortunately, no-one has taken up the torch where you left it and the book is pretty much as you left it.

In the event that you hadn't heard of it and it might help lure you back, there started a Category:CJK stroke order project at Commons in late 2006 which would be of enormous help with the Wikibook.

All the best, --Swift (talk) 23:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with People's Republic of China requested[edit]

Falun Gong members seem to be on a rampage as of late, defacing and coordinating in an effort to see critical members banned. [[Falun Gong]], currently banned in the Chinese mainland after being declared an ''evil cult'' by the government, claimed anywhere from 20 to over 100 million followers depending on the source being "an internal police investigation"<ref>http://www.minghui.org/mh/articles/2004/8/25/82595.html</ref>, the Chinese Sports Ministry<ref>http://partners.nytimes.com/library/world/asia/042799china-protest-leader.html</ref>, or various unnamed government sources<ref>http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C01E3DB1E3DF932A35756C0A96F958260</ref><ref>http://tw.fgmtv.org/fgm/gb/artcontent.asp?artID=10013</ref>. The Chinese Government, however disputes these claims and states a much lower figure of 2 million.<ref>http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/1999/09/08/1308</ref> This is the solution attempting to be offered as a compromise to the current situation, assistance requested if you have the time or interest. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.52.178.116 (talk) 04:00, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Google-censorship-slips.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.

Religion in China[edit]

Hi Ran just dropping by to say hi, if you ever get the chance to, another editor and I are having trouble with another editor who is insisted on engaging in an edit war to post up his Islam template in the Religion of China article, see [1], this user has vandalized this same article in the past to insert his own POV (ie. that China has a Muslim of 100 million). I have no idea why that guy is so obsessed with Chinese Islam, out of curiosity I've asked him several times what is his background with Chinese Islam (ie. Are you of Chinese Muslim background? Are you of Chinese background? Are you fluent in Mandarin? etc...), only to be ignored. From what I've gathered, I can only assumed the guy has little to no background in the Chinese language (I've made corrections to his pinyin in his articles in the past), from his most recent article Yeheidie'erding which I might add was created out of copying and pasting information out of the Islam during the Yuan Dynasty article that I posted in the past (in fact the title is a pinyin correction I made on his behalf). Abstrakt (talk) 23:47, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also following up on what Angelo De La Paz has provided, Editingman seems to be desperately trying to push for his POV in the figure of the Chinese Muslim population being 100 million, after looking at the edits on the People's Republic of China article and seeing that Editingman deleted sources as in this instance, [2]. Beijing Subway update[edit]

Hi Ran. I am a big fan of your map that you created in the Beijing Subway article. I am currently living in Beijing and I am excited to see all those subway lines opening up in the coming years. Recently there were some announcements saying that 7, 14, 15, and the Fangshan line are starting construction in 2008. http://house.china.com.cn/Market/view/17014.htm I was able to find the planned direction and the stops in several different sites, which are listed below.

Line 7: http://www.bii.com.cn/xxjs.asp?dj=3&bigClassName=2008%C4%EA%C4%E2%BF%AA%B9%A4%BD%A8%C9%E8%CF%EE%C4%BF&SmallClassName=%B1%B1%BE%A9%B5%D8%CC%FA%C6%DF%BA%C5%CF%DF%D2%BB%C6%DA&admin=1

Line 14: http://www.bii.com.cn/xxjs.asp?dj=3&bigClassName=2008%C4%EA%C4%E2%BF%AA%B9%A4%BD%A8%C9%E8%CF%EE%C4%BF&SmallClassName=%B1%B1%BE%A9%B5%D8%CC%FA%CA%AE%CB%C4%BA%C5%CF%DF%D2%BB%C6%DA&admin=1

Line 15: http://house.focus.cn/photoshow/1054/6037131.html

Fangshan Line: While I couldn't find the exact map, it was drawn in the following plan: http://www.bii.com.cn/xxjs.asp?dj=2&bigClassName=%B1%B1%BE%A9%CA%D0%B9%EC%B5%C0%BD%BB%CD%A8%BD%FC%C6%DA%BD%A8%C9%E8%B9%E6%BB%AE&admin=1 Do you plan to reflect the announcements on your map anytime soon?

Also, I have a question on some of the subway stop names. For example, the names of the stops listed on your map is different from the oens on this site: http://www.bii.com.cn/xxjs.asp (you can click on the respective lines from here). While I did find many images of the planned lines and stops that supports your map, this site provides different names of the stops and paths that these lines take. Could it be that this site hasn't been updated for a while? Or it's the other way around?

In any case, you're map is very simple and well designed. I hope you can update the map because it is a great reference for all of us who live in Beijing. Thank you very much for your great contribution! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dsst40 (talkcontribs) 04:49, 26 October 2008 (UTC) Dsst40 (talk) 02:16, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Titles[edit]

Hi, can you help translate the song titles at Lü Ji (composer)? Also, can you find further sources about him in Chinese? Badagnani (talk) 03:37, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another article[edit]

Hi, can you tell me what 如意 means? Badagnani (talk) 04:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found it at Erxian. I just want to start a Wiktionary entry. Badagnani (talk) 05:38, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, can you check [3]? Can it also mean other things? There are thousands of hits for this term at [4]. Badagnani (talk) 06:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about the thousands of Flickr hits (linked in my previous post) that have this term in the description or title, yet don't depict the ritual object? I don't understand that. Badagnani (talk) 18:59, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so it's written on altars, calligraphy scrolls, etc.--then if it's a commonly used phrase, shouldn't that be added as a separate definition in Wiktionary? Badagnani (talk) 19:50, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be more of a phrase, as in http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/your_wish_is_my_command or http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/as_you_wish ? Badagnani (talk) 19:58, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Xinjiang[edit]

Hello Ran, what was your source for the yengi yezik̡ spellings in the List of administrative divisions of Xinjiang? About half of them are wrong, because spelling conventions are different in the two writing systems and unfortunately it's not possible to transliterate directly from kona yezik̡ to yengi yezik̡, especially with loandwords from Chinese. —Babelfisch (talk) 01:06, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Poem[edit]

Hi, this poem by Bai Juyi (also famous for his poem about the pipa) is given at Ruan, without translation. Can you translate it?

掩抑复凄清,非琴不是筝。还弹乐府曲,别占阮家名。古调何人知,初闻满座惊。

Badagnani (talk) 02:03, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, does it have a title? Is the language so different that you can't get a rough translation? Badagnani (talk) 03:13, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need help at Guan (instrument)[edit]

Thanks for the above; now I need help at Guan (instrument). Can you come up with pinyin (and rough literal translation) for 鸭母哒仔, as found at [5]? Also, does it say if it's made out of bamboo or wood? And which type of opera does it say it's used in? Badagnani (talk) 19:28, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I see one thing: (pronounced "a") is used as a postposition оr noun identifier in Hokkien, similar to 子 in Mandarin). So maybe the instrument's name means something like "female duck quacker"? Badagnani (talk) 19:43, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with drum name[edit]

OK, I need some Mandarin help this time. The small drum called 点鼓 (also spelled 怀鼓) is apparently pronounced "huaigu." See [6]. However, Wiktionary doesn't give "huai" as a pronunciation for 点 (see . Is Wiktionary wrong? Badagnani (talk) 19:20, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, that doesn't answer my question. All the Google hits with the spelling 点鼓 give the pronunciation as "huaigu." I don't see how that's possible given the pronunciations given for the first hanzi in this word, none of which is "huai." Is the Wiktionary entry for wrong? Badagnani (talk) 20:11, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about this one? It seems very official. Badagnani (talk) 20:19, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Big thanks, I've bookmarked them all. Badagnani (talk) 20:46, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, a Vietnamese-POV editor keeps removing the fact that Zhao Tuo was Han Chinese. He was from Zhending, Hubei but settled in Nanyue and adopted Yue customs. See this edit. Can you locate any sources (in either Chinese or English) stating that he was Han? I assumed that if he was from Hubei was Chinese, and spoke Chinese, and no source indicated that he was Manchu, Korean, or some other northern non-Han ethnicity, that he was Han. It would be greatly appreciated. Badagnani (talk) 21:49, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can you tell what this image says? It doesn't look like a ruan but the caption seems to call it that. Badagnani (talk) 05:40, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, so 咸 can also be a traditional character (even though it's also used as a simplified character)? Badagnani (talk) 05:50, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

快花六板[edit]

Hi, can you tell me how the first syllable of 快花六板 should be pronounced? Badagnani (talk) 03:00, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, can you get the hanzi for Yeheidie'erding? Badagnani (talk) 00:04, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I thought you'd like to know that I've changed the redirect at Osama back to Osama bin Laden. See the talk page for my reasoning. Thanks, Jafeluv (talk) 09:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can you add the hanzi for Beiijing HsingHai Musical Instruments Corporation? They seem to have added "piano" to their name, which is confusing. Also, can you garner any other details about their products from Chinese-language sources? They used to make a lot of Chinese instruments but maybe now they're making mostly Western instruments. Thank you, Badagnani (talk) 19:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
