Article requests

Hi, Pratyya! Do you do article requests in Bengali? WhisperToMe (talk) 14:22, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes. I do. But if you can wait for 3 days then I can translate your article. My exam is going on and it will end 5 May. So I'll start working from 5 may evening. So if this suits you, you can give me your article. Cheers. --Pratyya (Hello!) 14:37, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
That's fine! I'll wait until your exams are over. I'll post the requests here and when you are ready, you may do them :)
WhisperToMe (talk) 17:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Since it's been 3 days, are you ready to begin one of them? WhisperToMe (talk) 19:40, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Ya. I've started. But due to bad connection of my internet I'm doing them in MS Office. Don't worry. They'll be done.--Pratyya (Hello!) 01:58, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Thank you! Please let me know when they are finished :) WhisperToMe (talk) 05:36, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

afc

While eviewing old afcs, I notice you have rejected some as "all plot" where the article isn't about a wortk of fiction, e.g. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Watershed Highschool. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Walter Erwin Diewert , Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Gabriel john Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Omar Newell, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Maya Eventov, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Latonya Holloway, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Kamal Khetan, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Printing Processes, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/RAD21L, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Smiling Mind, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Steve Babb, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/The Bloody Minded, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Choijin Lama Temple Museum (I moved this one to mainspace) , Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Conducting From the Grave, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Data in Use Encryption, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Camille Armstrong, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ben Zane. Most of these are unsuitable, but the authors deserve to know the correct reason why, so they will understand, and in cases where it is fixable, fix the article. Some of these are rescuable, but the author will now be long gone. What now needs to be done is to go back over them, decline them for the appropriate reason, and write a personal message to each author explaining the error. (there were a few others where it fit a speedy deletion criterion & I simply deleted them) I suspect you just chose the wrong item from the drop-down list-- it's an easy error to make, and one of the reasons why why I almost always give a custom explanation.)

We all make errors. I certainly do. When I am told about them, I apologize and fix the problem. DGG ( talk ) 20:00, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

DGG thank you. Yeah I made mistakes there and most of them are 3 or 4 months old. Some are almost 5 months. And I made lots of mistakes that time. So I am a bit busy this time. When I'll get time I'll do what is need to do. Cheers.--Pratyya (Hello!) 03:26, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
well, at least I caught these. If I find other similar errors from the period I will list them, so you can deal with them eventually also. And I'll fix what I can immediately fix myself, as always. Once we clear up the backlog of old AfCs, all this will be easier. DGG ( talk ) 05:01, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Help

Hi Pratyya,

I had submitted an article on 'Cullen Investments', which was declined on 17 April 2013. Here's the link for your reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Cullen_Investments

Previously the article was declined on 31 March 2013 due to insufficient references considering which the reference list was updated considerably.

This time the reason for rejection is 'promotional stuff'. I'll be grateful if you can help me with the editing and successful submission of the same article. Additionally it will be good if you can point out a few lines in the article which sounds like promotional stuff.

Thanks

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hello I am the one who created the page in Bengali wikipedia. It was fully written in Bengali script but only the title was in English. It got deleted by User:Suvray without any reason. He may have moved it to the bengali spelling title of the page instead. Solomon7968 (talk) 13:50, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Hey Solomon7968. Okay. I understand that you used Google Translator. But the fact is Google Translate's Bengali Translation is not that good. In fact it doesn't give the correct translation. So it is difficult to understand an English Translation to Bengali. In fact we can change that but you see we don't have much people working on Bengali Wiki. Again an un-understandable language in article space will reduce WP's rating to general people. That's why Subroto da I mean User:Suvray deleted the page. I hope you understand. At last I want to say that your "English Title" is not the problem the problem is that article translation was un-understandable. I hope you understand.--Pratyya (Hello!) 14:14, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

I got in Bengali wikipedia with a vision to develop the mathematics and computer science section. The response I have got truly makes me sad. If you check the article I translated you will get to know the importance of the article. Now you cannot just make a scientific article understandable. And I was not going to just keep the article the same. But User:Suvray deleted it without any notification on the IP talk page which truly makes me sad. Even worse is the quality of the Bengali wikipedia. You have got thousand of editors editing articles on Quran, Islam but when a single editor even tries to make a science article, it is deleted without a notification, forget discussion. Hats off Bengali wikipedia. Solomon7968 (talk) 14:36, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Solomon7968, I don't have admin rights on Bengali Wikipedia. So I don't know what did you wrote at that deleted article. But you can give me that. So that I can translate that for you. So what's your opinion? I really wanna help you and I found that article interesting, that's why I asked you? PS, I am a science student.--Pratyya (Hello!) 14:47, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
It was a clear Google translation but I visioned to add separate articles for every technical translations of the book. To tell you the significance of the book the name is Godel, Escher, Bach. Godel is one of the pioneers of computer science. Bach is one of the three greatest composers ever born on this planet along with Beethoven and Mozart. And M. C. Escher is a great Dutch painter. It explores the mathematics of Godel through the music of Bach. Added to these it is a classic even after 40 yrs and is one of its kind book in history. The book was written by Douglas Hofstadter whose father is a nobel laureate. I have no other way to explain you the significance of the book. Solomon7968 (talk) 14:59, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Solomon7968, I know everyone of them and I have found the importance of that book. That's why I told you that I want to translate that article.
Also please don't blame Bengali Wikipedia. It has only 6 active admins and only 30+ user who edits that wiki regularly and wants to improve that wiki. And Subroto da is a new admin so he's learning about the admin tools So he may be forgot to notify you and deleted the page directly. And now I know you so if you have any problem at Bengali Wiki you can come to me. Again don't think bad about Bengali Wiki. Cheers.--Pratyya (Hello!) 15:06, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

I have lost faith in Bengali wikipedia though I will continue make India (and Bengal) related articles on English wikipedia. I am editing only since mid 2011, though I enjoy it very much now and here collaboration is much easier and we have really got some Very smart people on English wikipedia. Varg Vikernes

One article from over a decade ago was used to justify Vikernes's inclusion. He has since said he is not religious and this can be found on the very same site. Help needed

Hi Pratyya, if you know Hindi/Tamil, could you help me to translate this article? Thanks. Arctic Kangaroo () 14:40, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Tamil is in no way related to Hindi. Solomon7968 (talk) 15:10, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Agreed. Tamil to a native Hindi speaker is almost like Greek to a native English speaker. smtchahaltalk 02:32, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Okay. Sorry for the late reply. I was busy these days and now I'm free. Now Hindi and Tamil isn't related. It's true. And I know hidi and I can speak it fluently. But the problem is I can't write hindi. I don't know the hindi alphabet. So I can't help you. But I can help you with Bengali. Solomon7968, do you want me to translate or you want me to check these 2 articles?--Pratyya (Hello!) 15:28, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

No I am asking you to source the English article. As far I know only Dhaka University of Bangladesh is of colonial era, 17 from India and I have no knowledge of Pakistan. But these are all scattered in different sources. This list can be a good reference then. Solomon7968 (talk) 15:41, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello Pratyya Ghosh, my name is Howicus. I noticed you undid User:LieutenantLatvia's edit here [1], but when you did so, you accidentally re-added a huge block of nonsense characters that LieutenantLatvia removed. I'm sure it was just a mistake, and you've been doing a great job fighting vandals in general. Just double-check before reverting. Howicus (talk) 15:31, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Annnnd I really should have checked the other sections first. Never mind. Howicus (talk) 15:36, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 12:24, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Please reconsider your reversion of my edit to the Seymour Benzer article

I don't want to be blocked so am hoping I have figured out how to "talk" to you.

I looked up "good faith" and the tool you used.

This is what I want to tell you.

(1.) It's the truth and Seymour Benzer himself talked about his Jewish background. Many many sources, but here is one good one. Please look at session 1. http://oralhistories.library.caltech.edu/27/1/OH_Benzer_S.pdf

(2.) It is not incidental. Many immigrant or first generation Jewish boys from that time period and the metropolitan NY area wound up as noted scientists. Many credit their cultural ethnic background. Great example is I. I. Rabi who cites his mother when he came home from school, and asked him if he asked a good question (not what he learned, but what he questioned). Questioning, whether or not one arrives at an answer, is a particularly Jewish way of approaching intellectual material.

(3.) Given European Jewish history, in the time period, calling Jews from Poland or Russia, either Polish or Russian, fails to capture the reality of the contemporaneous identities as seen both from the governments in question, and from the individuals. (For assimilated Jews in Germany say, calling those individuals Germans could in fact be correct in a way that it would not be for those living in Poland and Russia. Moreover, Seymour Benzer's parents were "shtetl" Jews in his own words -- they would not have identified as Polish, or being from Poland without the qualifier or being Jewish.)

Thank you for considering this. If I have not persuaded you, please give me another chance. If I have, please let me know whether I do the "undo" link or you ... this is my first experience with this editing.

Your "You have new messages" sign showed up on a common computer in a hallway here. I therefore have reason to believe that the vandalism originated here. I made our IT department aware of the situation, but there seems to be little they can do as it occurred outside our "firewall".Writtenright (talk) 18:18, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
