redirects from species to genus
Hi, I noticed that you created a redirect at Elephantopus elatus redirecting to Elephantopus. This practice has not been considered desirable by most people working on plant articles (and maybe species in general; not as sure about the other kingdoms). The practice has been to leave the links red until a species article is written (if the genus article exists, the link could be written as Elephantopus elatus to provide the reader something relevant to link to). There should be some past discussions somewhere in the WT:PLANTS archives; I don't know if there is a policy which covers it. Kingdon (talk) 03:38, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Rewriting the link as you suggest would mean that there wasn't a redlink left to link to the article if it was ever written - but I've added a separate link to the genus (in the stub Elephantopin which started this off) and requested speedy deletion of the redirect. If I want both the bluelink and the redlink I tend to write Elephantopuselatus (although I'm not sure that is obviously better than what you did, which also provides the blue and red links). Pam, I noticed that you'd retagged the Dana Walsh article, which I've started working on. I'm going to continue to add information, but this is the first article I've actually created from scratch, and I'm fairly new to wikipedia.

Because no-one looking for the film would fall across the article on the musical. The disambiguation page at Balalaika (disambiguation) points to them both, and the article at Balalaika points to that disambiguation page, but "hatnotes" pointing from one disambiguated article title to another, or to the disambiguation page, are considered to be unnecessary clutter in articles and get deleted. Assessment
This month we focus on article assessment as a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes on this. In January the new version of the bot used for generating the information was deployed. For the observant you will have noticed the changes made to the assessment table on the left, it now has details of all of the pages other than articles that are tagged with the project banner. Now you can see counts of the categories, templates, files and other miscellaneous tagged pages that the project is looking after. The article count earlier in the newsletter does not include all of the newly reported classes as they are not really articles.
A new facility is the ability to click on any of the numbers and get a list of the articles that are in the intersection of the article importance rating with the quality rating. For example this enables you to see all of the articles that the project has rated as high priority stub-class articles. This is something that was not readily available prior to this revision of the bot.
The quality ratings are only valid at the time they are done and may be out of date as some of the assessments were done over two years ago. Many of the articles have changed since they were rated so it would be good if members could re-rate them when they see substantial changes to a particular article or flag it up for someone more experienced to take a look at and revise the quality rating if appropriate. Many of the articles were rated before the introduction of the C-class rating so may be over rated as B-class articles or under rated as Start-class articles.
Other changes have taken place in the formatting of the log files and more is to come. The data is now stored in a database off wiki and so tools can be written to generate further reports, have customised rating levels for projects etc. The bot is also able to get through the articles quicker and so is reporting changes daily rather than about weekly as with the previous version.

Biographies of Living People
This month we need to concentrate efforts on Biographies of Living People (BLP) as detailed at WP:BLP. There is currently ongoing discussions about what should be done with nearly 50,000 unsourced articles on living people that have accumulated and being tagged with the {{BLP unsourced}} template. Options range from deleting all of them immediately to a period of grace for the articles to be sourced. There is also discussions as to what should be done, going forward, with new articles on living people that are created without sources. Do have your say on these discussions here, if you are interested in biographical articles.
As a project we have not tagged many biographical articles but looking at the articles of people under the Yorkshire category an estimate of 150 of these are tagged as unreferenced. This does not include those related to the various sports people who play for the many teams in the area. Obviously those articles relevant to the project we would want to save from the axe and so we need to concentrate our efforts on referencing articles that have been tagged as unreferenced. Once articles have been given some references then the tag can be changed to {{BLP sources}} or removed, if full referencing has been done.

You did not create a section to discuss your proposed merger. But before you do please look at the history of Public school (privately funded)/ I have created this stub to "wack a rat" of someone content forking the article independent school (UK) which you will see from the history of Ps(pf) was moved from the article Ps(pf) while that article was still called public school (UK). Biographies of Living People
As a follow up to last month's feature on BLP articles a BOT is now creating project listings of those BLP articles that are tagged as totally unreferenced. The listing for our project can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/Unreferenced BLPs, I have added a link to this from the project side-bar for easy access to the listing. There are just five articles remaining on the list at the time of going to press, so well done.
General Election
The next General Election will be announced sometime during the month and so we need to concentrate our efforts on the articles relating to this. There are two main sets of articles relevant here, firstly the constituency articles and secondly the articles relating to the candidates that are standing for election. Taking the first group there are a number of boundary changes relating to the constituencies in the area that will be implemented at the time of the General Election. These changes need to be reflected into the settlement articles that are affected by the change. I would suggest that the settlement's history section is updated to include details of the former constituency when adding the new one so that information is not lost. All of the constituency articles will need to be kept up to date with the list of candidates that are standing for the election. Much of the basic work on this has been done but new candidates will emerge until the closing date for candidates to declare. Note that the order of candidates should be maintained in ballot paper order prior to the result being declared so that we do not favour any of the parties in the election. So even if A. Aardvark is standing for the "Lets do away with wiki" party then they should appear first regardless of if we support them or not.
On the second set of articles, those on candidates, we are back to issues relating to BLP, NPOV and to avoiding them, or their supporters, using wiki as an electioneering medium. We should be vigilant to remove anything that ventures into this area as quickly as possible. There may be articles for candidates who are standing that are not tagged for the project so it would be good for these to be tagged so we can keep an eye on them. It is also a good time to improve the articles on the candidates as they will no doubt get more hits during the election period. Those of you in the UK may also see some of the candidates out on the campaign trail and it would be good to get a photo for their article if possible. It does not have to be a Yorkshire related politician as there are lots of articles about politicians that needed photos or updates to dated images.

Explain to me how non partisan biographical detail on national legislature parliamentary candidates is not relevant two weeks before an election. Please don't refer to the Wikipedia guidelines. Neither you nor I would walk off a cliff if Wikipedia guidelines mandate it. Jimbo Wales describes Wikipedia as a "catalyst in the promotion of democracy", so how does OCD application of rule trump deleting timely non-partisan information? Well one argument would be that it would set the precedent for there to be articles on ... let's say 625 x 3 non-notable candidates ... a couple of thousand articles to be deleted after they all become failed candidates. These people are not notable, as defined by WP, and I'm happy to go with that definition. If you don't like it, argue it elsewhere. PamD (talk) 14:18, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
And another argument is that it would give some candidates undue apparent weight in a constituency list of candidates if they are linked and therefore seen to be "notable" because someone has created articles about them in contravention of existing policy, while other candidates are unlinked because someone who thought about writing an article about them complied with the policy, or indeed their article was deleted at AfD (as in the example I cited). Elections
The next General Election will take place this month as will the local elections in a number of areas in the region and so again this month we need to concentrate our efforts on the articles relating to these.
Last month I concentrated on the general election related articles in the run up to the announcement of the election. This month we need to concentrate on the aftermath of the election. The constituency articles are the first ones that need to be looked at and the results added to each of these. This gives us an opportunity to have some references on these pages as there will be extensive media coverage for the results. The articles relating to the set of new MPs will need to be updated to include details of their election victory and the office they take up in the new parliamentary session. At the same time those articles relating to politicians who loose their seat will need to be updated to cover this and to show the successor to the seat/office they held. Other articles that need to be looked at are the settlement articles to see if they need updating as a number of them mention the party that represent the place and some give details of the MPs that represent them.
As well as the general election there is also the local elections that are being held on the same day and again this needs to be looked at when updating the settlement articles as the council make up is often described in the governance section or given in the infobox. These elections will necessitate new articles creating for each of the councils that are holding elections to record the details of the election and the results. Others may generate these articles and members should tag these with the project tag {{WikiProject Yorkshire}} when they find them so that they can be tracked and are not forgotten about.

The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis. The latest listing was created on March 23rd.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 8,082 last month to 8,202 on May 28th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 54 is just behind WP:GM who have 58. WP:GM also has the lead in FAs at 43 out of a total number of 2,182 articles.
Currently we have twenty Yorkshire featured articles:

Images
As a change from all the election related material this month I thought that we could look at images. With summer on its way in England then it is time to spend away from the computer and in the great outdoors. There are many events and places to visit so if you are taking time out at any of these then take along your camera and capture the scene. Then when back home you can upload the images to Commons so that they can be used on any of the projects run by the foundation. This is preferred to uploading just to Wikipedia as they are more widely available to other projects and save time of people having to make the transfer of suitable images. When uploading images to Commons then you need to categorise the image to enable it to be located easily and to group it with others of a similar theme. It is best to put it in a specific category, but if you cannot find one then pick the best fit you can and others will shift it around into more suitable categories. The process is similar to article categorisation and multiple categories can be added, as appropriate, but an image should not normally be placed in a category and one of it's sub-categories.
There are a number of articles requiring images and the Yorkshire related ones can be found here. Take a look before you go out as you may be able to fulfil one of the requests while out visiting.
If you locate an article that requires an image and no suitable image is available then add the {{reqphoto}} template to the article talk page to flag the article appropriately. If you want an image of a specific thing then you can use the of= parameter to give details. For example, if an interior shot is required of the building that is the subject of the article then use {{reqphoto|of=interior}}. You can narrow the image to a location by using the in= parameter, {{reqphoto|in=Yorkshire}} will request a photo in Yorkshire. If you use North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire or the East Riding of Yorkshire in place of Yorkshire then it will categorise in the appropriate sub-category but will not show up in the request box. A way round this is to apply Yorkshire and the division to the request and they will show up but remain unlinked. So to a request an image in the East Riding of Yorkshire it may be best to use {{reqphoto|in=Yorkshire|in2=the East Riding of Yorkshire}} to show in the request box and classify it in both Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Yorkshire and Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
For biographical articles the biography project template {{WPBiography}} has a needs-photo= parameter which should be set to yes if a photograph is required.
When adding an image to an article also check the talk page and remove the flags if the image fulfils the request.

Reviewer rights
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

I just realized that it wasn't a good idea to place the list of scientific topics that my institute deals with.

Pending changes
The trial period for Pending Changes is under way and will last for two months. Initially this will be restricted to a pre-defined set of articles that are updated on a daily basis. The queue of articles for the trial is here. This involves a change to the article settings, similar to article protection, that allows edits by anonymous and non-autoconfirmed users to be delayed before going live. (It is possible to set it so that all edits need reviewing but this is not been used for the trial.) These edits will only go live when they have been reviewed by another user who has been granted the Reviewer user rights. Pages with revisions waiting review can be found here. A large number of the regular editors have been granted this privilege for the trial and if not it can be requested here. It is a good idea to have a look at the pages that have this applied so that you are clued up for the discussion following the trial. Those of you with one of the selected articles on their watchlist will get a notification at the top of the watchlist page when there are pending changes to an article on their watchlist.
Once the trial is over there will be a discussion on rolling the system out generally or to reject this method of handing changes. If you want more details on this then take a look at the help document.

Stub sorting
Thanks, Pam for stub sorting Chris Tompkins. Sorting is one of my weakest abilities; one of the things I like about Wikipedia is that one meets a lot of nice people who help fill in the holes in the articles. (I hope that someone interested in redneck music takes an interest as well since I know nothing about the subject. I created the stub merely to fill in another hole in the seemingly endless list of Alabama musicians.) I noticed from your user page that you're from Leeds; we also have a Leeds, Alabama but it is merely a speck on the map compared to yours. I do see your point. One perspective would be that this is a kind of event that happens because of the wonderful lighted nights in northern latitudes. But is we define it that way, what do we do about large summer festivals in places like Tel Aviv, where darkness falls at more or less the same time every year, but where the local organizers of a local call their all night, summer arts festival "White Night" and describe themselves as inspired by and imitating the Saint Petersburg festival? Is the phenomenon defined by the physical causes of its origins, or by the perspective of the people who have adopted both the idea the name? I also notice you changed my new article about a brand-named product to a redirect.
While these terms do seem to be used interchangeably, I would submit that the Fernet page is decidedly American (North and South) in nature (see the references) and does not have much to do with the Italian (or European) origins of the beverage in question.
I think perhaps "Fernet Branca" should disambiguate to the "Fernet" article and the "FERNET BRANCA" tradename article ???? TINYMARK 13:37, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm not an expert in this area, but the previous discussions at Talk:Fernet had come down on the side of one article rather than two. (If the brand had a separate article, the title should be Fernet-Branca (as used on the company's website) or Fernet Branca (looks from Google to be the more common), and certainly not all in capitals.) Perhaps it would be most useful to add your extra information to the appropriate sections of the Fernet article, maybe creating a new section about the brand name and company etc, and curing the American bias there. Thanks for the compliment! Yes, the reason is that I don't want to get involved in all the unpleasantness there seems too often to be, and I have enough off-Wiki stress! But also I only rarely come across something I want to do which I can't do without having a mop (the occasional move which is thwarted because of a page history to a redirect etc). That's fine, but don't fall into the misapprehension that getting a mop means you have to use it frequently. I've seen many RfAs run where the user is given the mop because they're trusted to use it wisely on the occasions they need it, with no expectation that they'll suddenly switch their areas of interest/expertise to vandal fighting etc. This is especially so with wikignomes, who are tremendously valued by experienced users. We need all flavours of Wikipedians: gnomes, content churners, FA developers, vandalbashers etc and if a mop would assist you from time to time and the community trusts you, it's daft for you not to have it. --Dweller (talk) 11:33, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

An article isn't considered to be categorized just because it has a stub template on it, if it doesn't also have at least one real content category — stub categories are meant to be temporary maintenance categories that are eventually meant to be removed from an article once it's long enough to no longer be considered a stub, so they don't count as categories for the purpose of the {{Uncat}} template. A stub category has a parent category which is not a stub category, so the article is categorised in the parent category by being given the stub category. I consider that to be categorized. Is there chapter and verse for your different interpretation? PamD (talk) 17:32, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Standard practice of Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories. Note, for example, on Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories/uncategorized, where it says "Articles with only stub categories still need to be included in non-stub categories." The whole point is that stub templates are temporary, and are supposed to be removed once the article has surpassed stub length, so a stub category will eventually disappear from the article. Accordingly, an article has to be added directly to at least one permanent content category to be considered as properly categorized. A stub category can exist alongside content categories — but because it's meant for maintenance purposes, not end-user browsing, it can't function as a substitute or replacement for content categories. Hi Matt: A disambiguation page in Wikipedia is not a complete list of all the possible meanings of a word or abbreviation. If the abbreviation was important enough to be mentioned in the article on the topic, in this case Resilience (organizational), then it would be OK to have a link to it in the disambiguation page ("dab page" for short). In fact even the phrase "Organizational resilience" doesn't appear in the article, let alone the abbreviation "OR". I hope that helps explain my perhaps rather cryptic edit summary! (Oh, and do you know that you can, and should, sign a talk page comment by using ~~~~ or the "signature and timestamp" button on the editing bar?) Happy editing! Maps
This month I thought that I would focus on the current discussions over the maps used in infoboxes for UK articles.
Firstly an initiative by user Nilfanion (talk) is currently under way on producing map data for the whole of the UK. The maps would cover all counties, wards, civil parishes etc. and be derived from the Ordnance Survey OpenData release. Further details can be seen here where feedback would be appreciated on two specific concerns—the colour scheme and line thickness. Discussion is also taking place as to what features to include on the maps, such as rivers, roads and railways.
Second discussion here on another alternative for mapping data changes to existing maps in infoboxes for districts, boroughs and cities in the UK.
Thirdly a discussion on Wales maps in place infoboxes is under way here, which has branched out into a general discussion on the initiative by user Nilfanionhere.
It would be good if members take time to have a look at these various proposals and comment, where they feel they have some input to offer, as these proposals could potentially affect all of the UK articles with maps in their infoboxes. If you do not speak now then you will have to put up with the results!

I'm about 90% certain the whole lot should be deleted, but The Matrix Prime (talk·contribs), who is responsible for them all springing up again in the last couple of days, has said he's working on them. Romeland
Just to let you know that I have expanded this. During Henry VIII's reign the house was, as far as I'm aware, known as Romeland, later becoming Cheshunt Great House. However, any information I couldn't verify with a source I've removed. The British History site has more information and Google shows up several more potentially useful pages, but I really don't want to get back into editing so I've done some work - hopefully enough to be of more use to readers and with a good enough source - and left it at that. If you feel it still deserves deletion, leave a message at my Talk page and I'll probably do some more investigation. I can understand why you didn't leave a prod message on my Talk page, but if you wish to delete anything further, please leave a message there, I will probably continue to monitor it for a while as I feel uncmfortable having left articles still needing a lot of work, but don't feel I've been given much choice but to retire.
Thank you for taking the time to leave me advice on my Talk page but I'm afraid that I don't feel there's any way I can continue editing Wikipedia, I've become too upset and too disillusioned with the whole thing, but I wish you the best with continuing the great work you do on here. Hi Pam,
A couple of weeks ago I was working on "acronyms" and came across your name. Looking at your user pages, I was astounded at the meticulous and prodigious work you have done. I put you on my watch list, and made up my mind to drop you a line, and congratulate you on what must be one of the most comprehensively maintained pages in Wikipedia. Today, I was about to do that but first had a look at some of my own earlier posting. I ended up on the Sword of Damocles, and to my surprise saw that you had made a note on my contribution there quite some time ago. This was serendipity!
I'm always interested in the finer points of the English language, and my favourite gripe (everyone has one) is the misuse of the phrase "beg the question" where "raise the question" is intended. I'm currently interested in compiling a list of English words which are near impossible to define, words like cute, chagrin and serendipity itself. These are terms which cannot be readily understood except by coming across them numerous times in real literary contexts. I notice that many words becoming obsolete, like ruth (but not ruthless) have meanings which cannot readily be imparted by the dictionary, whereas most contemporary neologisms (like high-five, or software) are simply names of easily identifiable procedures or objects. Have you any ideas on this? (Just noticed Word’s spellchecker does not know “ruth”, and questions my “imparted” suggesting the odious “impacted” which seems to be the modern turbo-charged alternative to “affected”). I made the move because since there are actual humans called dwarfs, I thought our article on dwarf should not make any assumptions on whether mythological or medical dwarfs/dwarves are intended. If you look up dwarf in an English dictionary, usually the "person" definition comes first. It seemed presumptuous to me that our article on dwarf made the first assumption that a dwarf is mythical, when millions of real dwarfs exist in real life on planet Earth.

I've since created some new articles, and now each of the entries in this list has its own article and is (again) listed at the Paean disambiguation page. I'd never heard of him/her, and just did the routine tidying-up I do on many stub articles! You need to find some "reliable sources", ie not just imbd, which can supply and support information about the person, and give more of their biography, not just a straight list of titles. Regarding The Boy With A Leaking Boot in Houlton, ME
I saw the statue and took a large sharp photo of it that I can upload. Would that satisfy you as a reliable source? - i.e. certify that it exists in situ, the quality of the maintenance would be visible and one could count the number of drinking fountains.
I wondered why you did not add Citation Needed to the following sentence in the entry:

The map link isn't what WP would call a Reliable Source, but by searching around I've found a very detailed account of the statue and its history, and have linked to it. (You added a reference name but no reference, which didn't help much.) The points you mentioned above are all in a paragraph which is sourced by the two references at its end, which is acceptable WP practice for non-controversial material like this, rather than peppering the whole paragraph with references for each individual point. No, as I'm not living at home at the moment. I had the leaflet in my hand when I added the information - possibly it didn't have page numbers, I don't remember. I may or may not still have it at home. But I don't think you should remove other editors' sourced information, even if you personally haven't got the source to hand and you find their reference slightly defective - certainly not in a case like this of non-controversial information. In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 56 is just behind WP:GM who have 58. WP:GM also has the lead in FAs at 47 out of a total number of 2,218 articles.
Currently we have twenty one Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive (See this month's feature below)
To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members
and apropos of the above a 2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.
Updates
Last month I brought your attention to the proposals for changes to maps in articles and the newer maps have started to be deployed on some of the Scotland and Wales articles. The English ones will follow on though there has been comments on the loss of some features so this may be revised before mass deployment.
The trial for the pending changes implementation has ended and after discussion a straw poll is under way and now is the time to voice your opinion over the trial and if pending changes should continue to be used or if it should be abandoned.
A further batch of about 10,000 images from the Geograph project has been uploaded to Commons. If you are looking for an image then there may be one available on Commons you just have to search for it! Many of the images are incorrectly categorised at the moment but these are being rectified as they are spotted. If you have time then you can give a hand checking out the image categorisation.

Advertising
Hi Pam! I regret that in the instance of the Ilkley article I have to disagree with you with regard to the advertising aspect. At one time the websites were non commercial. However they now have extensive advertsing on them, which is against WP:ELNO. For example on the 'ilkley.org' website see:- [2] and the 'visitilkley.com' website now redirects to:- 'www.visitbradford.com' with these pages:- http://www.visitbradford.com/accommodation/ Accomodation and Food & Drink. The Bradford site is the council's official tourism site, so includes adverts among other useful information. The ilkely.org site appears to me to include enough useful information to outweigh the fact that it also lists local businesses. If every website which included a listing of commercial organisations was excluded as "web pages with objectionable amounts of advertising", a vast number of useful external links would be missing. Wikipedia 0.8 release
Work is starting on preparing release 0.8 of the off line version of Wikipedia and the articles are in the selection stage. The initial selection has been done using some metrics about each of the articles. The number of projects that are interested in the article and the breadth of the individual projects. This is followed by the ratings of quality and importance that have been assigned to the article by each of the interested projects. There is also factored in what is termed the "External interest points" which is based on the number of hits the article gets, the number of unique internal links the article has and the number of inter-wiki links the article has. If you want more detail of the algorithm used then see here.
They have also selected a specific version of each of the articles that they consider is a stable version without vandalism using a version of the WikiTrust algorithm.
After all of this work they have come up with a selection of 116 articles that have been tagged as relevant to our project and these can be viewed here. We have a chance to influence this selection by reporting articles that people do not think are suitable or where an inappropriate version has been selected. It would also be a good idea to try and tidy up these articles before they get published if anyone has the time. Of the 116 the two articles that have been identified by tags as most needing attention are Asda and Rotherham. We have until October 11th to check out and report any problems or improved versions that need to be incorporated in to this release.

Another time I'll provide a link. I've started to glimpse at Wikipedia:Copyright_problems to see if there are interesting (and usually well-established) articles which need rescuing (ie to preserve the infrastructure of categories, perhaps infobox, and redirects pointing to the page), after being shocked to find Camila Batmanghelidjh as a red link after her article had been deleted as copyvio. I probably haven't yet re-created all the useful redirects from mis-spellings of her name, all of which a bot cleared away once her article was deleted. So I'm creating a small trickle of non-infringing stubs to rescue topics, mostly people, from total deletion! PamD (talk) 18:57, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

G'day PamD, you recently added the {{Award-stub}} to Order of May. Please note that the correct stub template for all orders, decorations and medals (as part of a national/provincial honours system) is {{Orders-medals-stub}}. I have fixed this instance, but it would be appreciated if you could use the correct template in future as they feed to Wikipedia:WikiProject Awards and prizes and Wikipedia:WikiProject Orders, Decorations, and Medals respectively. {{Award-stub}} is intended for awards other than those in national/provincial honours systems. I just drop by there from time to time to create stubs for articles which seem notable and where deletion risks losing a lot of infrastructure which needn't be deleted - after being shocked when a highly notable person became a red link. I can't help on your username problem. On the monastery name, we don't add disambiguations in the middle of a name. If the monastery is actually called "Sfanta Treimbe Monastery", then that's the title of the article. If and when an article is written for another monastery of the same name, then they need to have "(Stramba)" etc added to disambiguate them, but added at the end: "Sfanta Treimbe Monastery (Stramba)". Dead links
This month I thought that I would concentrate on the problem of link rot in articles. Many of you will have spotted a BOT tagging references with the {{Dead link}} template. The template is added when the external link in a reference is detected as being inaccessible or is a redirect to the main page of the site. You should not remove references that are marked as dead unless you are replacing the reference with a new reference. The information in the reference may be useful to someone trying to locate a valid reference for the text. In order to help this process, when adding references in the first place, add as much detail as possible. It is easier to put in the detail while the reference is in front of you rather than waste someone else's time having to fill in the detail. If you want more detail then see Wikipedia:Link rot.
Many of the project's articles have been tagged in this way by the BOT and it would be useful if members could take a look at the tagged references, when visiting a page, and see if the problem can be resolved. May be the link is now active again in which case it is just a simple task of removing the template. May be an archived copy of the link can be located at the Wayback Machine, just add the link to the reference, if it is templated use the =archiveurl & =archivedate paramerters to record the new location of the link. If the site has been restructured then it may be possible to locate the same page used in the reference by following the links from the home page of the site. In this case replace the URL in the reference and remove the tag. Finally a replacement reference may need to be located if copies of the existing reference cannot be tracked down. If a new reference is used then the old reference and the tag can be removed.

First, you need to be sure that James Mahon satisfies Wikipedia's "notability" rules - see Wikipedia:Notability (people). If he doesn't, then no matter how well crafted an article is it is likely to be deleted.
Then you need to have WP:Reliable sources you can give as references to support what you want to say in the article. (This is required for all articles, but especially for articles about living people).
Beyond that, have a look at Wikipedia:Your first article. Take care about spelling and grammar, and write in whole sentences. Poor style won't get the article deleted as such, but it will upset other editors and need to be changed.
You will need to create it as James Mahon (xyz), where "xyz" is a short, preferably one-word, disambiguator: "footballer" or "musician" or whatever, because there is already an article called James Mahon. Remember to use capitals for J and M.
And remember to sign anything you add to talk pages (type ~~~~ or use the signature button on the edit bar.), and give it a "new section" heading.

Stub tag
I see that you removed the stub tag I put in Primavera (software). The talk page for that article already says "This article has been rated as Stub-Class on the project's quality scale." Sorry, I removed the {{stub}} tag and must have got distracted before adding the appropriate sorted stub tag, which I've now done. In my partial defence, it would have been less likely to happen if the stub tag had been in the right place, as set out in WP:LAYOUT: it goes after everything except inter-wiki links. If it's in the right place, stub-sorting only needs a few characters to be typed; if it's in the wrong place, stub-sorting involves deleting, [... getting distracted in the middle ...] and typing the whole sorted stub stag in the right place! You might as well leave it as plain http://www.margaretvisser.com/part5a.html which has the same appearance. Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 8,621 last month to 8,665 on November 29th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 62 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 60. WP:GM also has the lead in FAs at 49 out of a total number of 2,292 articles.
Currently we have twenty four Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive (See this month's feature below)
To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members
and apropos of the above a 2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.

Wishing all project members a Happy Christmas and thanks for all the work you have put in to the project over the last year. We have made great strides forward especially in the area of Good Articles
and this month we have a bumper set of seven articles trying for GA status. Some passed the review while others did not, but even a try moves an article forward. Thanks to ll those involved in these articles and keep up the good work.
Cleanup listing
Some members will know that we were subscribed to the clean-up listing that was produced on an occasional basis by a BOT. The BOT owner has left and has not released the source of the BOT for someone to pick-up. The last run of this BOT was in March of this year. Others have stepped in and produced a new tool that runs on the tool server to provide projects with similar information.
The clean-up listing gives details of all of the articles with the project's banner that have clean-up tags attached to them. The listing is in alphabetical order but can be sorted on class, importance or the number of different tags found in an article. If you want the listing grouped by the different tags then the tag grouped listing should be used.
According to the tool run dated 28 November of the 8,729 articles in this project 2,725 or 31.2% are marked for clean-up, though I am unsure how it gets the article count figure as that does not appear to match the counts from the assessment table.

Regarding a bitey comment
Hi Pam. I found this comment to Nicole.m.m to be rather "bitey", as they say. It could be taken as an bad faith assumption when you essentially accuse someone of having disrespect (or simply lacking respect) for the encyclopedia when they're only trying to contribute. Perhaps you happened to be frustrated and your tone came off more harshly than you generally would use when talking to people. Perhaps you simply left the message assuming that the user was a careless editor who should know better.
You should keep in mind that Nicole is a newcomer to Wikipedia, and it's likely that she will benefit from solid advice rather than condescending messages essentially complaining about 'having to clean up their mess'.
If you look at Nicole's userpage, you will see that she has been adopted (she's in a mentorship program for new users). It's sometimes a good idea to contact a user's mentor with concerns about any aspect of their "adoptee", as they have dedicated their time to helping that user; her mentor happens to be myself. I communicate with Nicole via email and am in the process of helping her. In fact, I was just about to post some suggestions to her talk page when I read your comment. Their article is a work in progress and they're doing it with no previous experience on Wikipedia whatsoever. I hope you can find it in your heart to let some rookie mistakes (such as putting an unfinished, messy article in the mainspace) slide, and trust that they're working for the betterment of Wikipedia. I probably reacted a lot more civilly than many editors would have done. I didn't delete large chunks of the rubbish in the article, but commented stuff out so that she could continue to develop it. I left edit summaries as I went, and left fairly civil message on her talkpage. Yes, I probably was rather frustrated by the time I'd got it into a state fit to be seen in an encyclopedia, but I should have been more encouraging. Putting a mess like that into article space is treating the encyclopedia with disrespect. I suppose I was surprised that anyone would think that article was fit to be left in article space - and at that stage I hadn't even discovered that she'd developed it in user space and made a positive decision to move it to article space! I've left a mildly conciliatory message on her talk page.
Perhaps the article construction template needs to be carefully annotated to point out to users that articles constructed using it should not be moved into article space until they are ready - or it needs to have more sections commented out, so that by default empty sections don't appear. It's obviously helpful to the article's progress, but it also saves me time from having to make a list like that myself. There are multiple users helping to streamline the article, which is a good thing, and I'll post your comments to the article's talk page. The only thing I'm unclear on is the notability issue. Yes. I did a couple of little edits yesterday then decided life was too short. But today I'm just amazed: the editor has spent about 2 hours editing it, but it still opens with a paragraph of rubbish, and still has rubbish "see also" and "external links" sections. Does she have any understanding that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not just a testbed for her coursework? Final Questions to Swarm and PamD
Thank you for looking over and editing my article. I have looked over your edits and suggestions per my instructor and have made some editions and edits as well. My understanding was that this is a "work in progress" and didn't fully realize complications of my poor grammar and spacing would do the article. I am very "green" to Wikipedia. I was more concerned with gathering appropriate references outside of wiki links to substantiate my article. What I initially found was sparse and I was very concerned about that initially. I was working backwards, my apologies and not an appropriate approach to this project.
If you wouldn't mind, can you look at my other article, Untitled, Indians, Reaper, Blacksmith, and Pioneer Family? I worked on the consistency of my language. But I do not want that article to also sound like a museum catalogue entry.
I want to clean up my reference list. How do I retrieve the expanded version of my reflist?

Wikibreak with interruptions...
For any talk page stalkers wondering why I'm making the odd contribution while on a Wikibreak ... I've promised myself not to look at my watchlist or do my usual sit-down-with-muesli-whoops-it's-now-lunchtime wiki editing until I've finished a couple of real life jobs, but I'm still monitoring my talk page using the amazing changedetection, and from time to time looking at Category:Stubs and stub-sorting anything beginning with "P". (If 25 other people would take on the other letters, there wouldn't be a backlog at that page.)
I'm really not understanding why anyone would revert a redirect back to a stub article that they then propose deleting. It would seem that converting the article to a redirect was an appropriate fix for now, so I'm going back to that setup. Thanks for the helpful comments, tidying the dab page and putting in the Requested Move. But on the latter, the rubric says "If there has been any past debate about the best title for the page, or if anyone could reasonably disagree with the move, then treat it as controversial." I see that you put it in the controversial list, but there hasn't been any past debate about the best title, and why should anyone disagree with the move? I'd have put it under the Current Requests heading under Uncontroversial requests and it would have been dealt with quickly. But furthermore, hasn't the page title always been "Henry Wood", so wouldn't the best course have been to skip the Requested Move page and just move it manually over the redirect to Henry Wood (disambiguation) rather than hanging around waiting for the bureaucracy to do something about it? I don't think a straight "move" would have worked because the redirect from Henry Wood (disambiguation) has been edited (adding a redirect template) which I'm pretty sure prevents us from simply moving the page to that title - so nearly sure that I didn't bother trying. Sorry, yes, I noticed that a bit too late and have reverted my comment (perhaps should have struck through instead). There are two separate questions: it's been agreed that the conductor is the primary usage of "Henry Wood", hence the RM. It hasn't been agreed, between the music buffs, which is the appropriate name for the article! See Talk:Henry_J._Wood#Article_title. I noticed that was the only move listed but from the comments in the requested move it seemed there was a consensus for the other move as well and as it seemed like it would be uncontroversial it seemed to make sense. My bad for not checking enough - I'd looked at this a little while back and decided it wasn't obvious enough for a non-admin closure (that was before the last !vote) and my memory was that both moves made sense so I didn't check as thoroughly as I should have done this time. I'm new to this and prone to make mistakes. However to answer you question regarding the Lancia 3 RO, it came from the German side of Wikipedia. I've tried to translate it as best possible, but I do not have the know how to execute the hypertext links and other flashy features of Wikipedia.

But I've nearly got tempted into doing an article about Bolton Hall, North Yorkshire (or should that be a bracketed disambiguation, as it's a building rather than a placename?), having found it here its folly tower here, and various geograph (ie uploadable to Commons) photos here. GT: I knew about the Ambassadors scheme, but thanks for thinking of me. I don't think I'll volunteer: if US graduate students can produce something like this, and later leave it looking like this after a session of two hours editing, I'm not sure I've got the patience! That particular editor certainly didn't get the Wikipedia bug: she hasn't edited anything since the coursework was finished. It would be interesting to know how many such students turn into regular editors - but I suppose the average student is busy enough with coursework. paid work and student life, hasn't got the spare time and energy of retired layabouts like us. Thank you for your note. I created the articles and put the "stub" notations on them to note they really needed to be expanded, to make similar summaries as HIV/AIDS in Asia, HIV/AIDS in Europe, and HIV/AIDS in Africa. I am planning on expanding them but I hope others will help too. So I'm going to go ahead and remove the deletion tags as you wrote, and put this note in the talk pages. Thanks also for your comments about how outdated the data on List of countries by HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate was. I've been checking it while it looks like the data so far was copied over reliably, a lot of it was out of date. I am updating it with more recent data and adding references to make it reliable. 3 architects with same name ...
I'm working on an architect called John Johnson (1732-1814), currently redlinked as John Johnson (architect). However, there are two lesser-known but notable C19 architects with the same name, John Johnson (1807-1878) and John Johnson (c1845-1920) and I want to write them up, too, as it's easy to confuse the latter two (and the first, in the case of careless editors). They all worked and, probably, lived In London. WP advice on disambiguation isn't very helpful for this case and I can't find another 3 who had the same name and occupation and lived in the same century. There's no doubt that the earliest is the most notable (Shire Hall, Chelmsford, County Hall, Lewes, and various country houses and buildings in London), but I'd like to include "architect" in the titles of the other articles. Any precedents that you can find? Can you suggest anything better than John Johnson, architect, d. 1878 (or ... 1807-1878) and John Johnson, architect, d. 1920 (or ...c.1845-1920)? --GuillaumeTell 17:40, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I think "born" is used much more than "died", even for dead subjects - search on "smith born" and "smith died" to see. (I wonder what proportion of all WP biogs are footballers? Looks pretty high!) So I'd call the 2nd and 3rd John Johnson (architect born 1807) and John Johnson (architect born 1845) (unless the "c." is too much of a problem?). Not sure whether the first needs to be John Johnson (architect born 1732) - I suppose not, as he's the primary topic for "John Johnson (architect)", though it would guarantee that all incoming links to him were actually intended for him. No, on thinking about it, readers would be much better served if you leave him at John Johnson (architect), and have a hatnote there pointing to the other two.

Thanks, that sounds OK. The three are all on this page, and since the last of them was a member of the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) from 1863, c1845 should be OK. (The RIBA has a Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 but the google books preview only has brief details and no birthdate.) Hi, sorry about mistakes linking to disambiguation pages etc. I see you specialise in that sort of thing, while I like to be creative in bringing stuff together when writing a new page (just done three after a long break). Though I have quite a bit of experience it can be a bit of a battle getting a new page going these days - the bots are onto you and trying to speedydelete before you've got started - 'orphaned' 'no cites', even 'plaguarising' if I copy text from the web for a start ready to tidy it up - give me a chance here! So I race to get a framework in place quickly, and my mind gets involved in the facts. I wikify what I have written and then later work on failed wikilinks - to establish the page's survival. Often associations come up that surprise me, and I want to get them in place before I forget. If I were too careful I might not do my thing so well, so many thanks for your work, but remember the Wiki command 'be bold' also exists, and it is ok to let others improve:-) Lindosland (talk) 00:51, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Prod
Prod should clearly not be used to delete an article on a United States Supreme Court case. If it's a stub, build it up, don't prod it. All the information you need is right there in the infobox. And it's equally inexplicable to prod an article that you just recently asked me to expand. Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 8,678 last month to 8,766 on January 28th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 65 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 60. WP:GM also has the lead in FAs at 50 out of a total number of 2,342 articles.
Currently we have twenty four Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive (See this month's feature below)
To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members
and apropos of the above a 2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.
Article Alerts
After nearly a year without the Article Alerts listing after the previous BOT operator departed a new BOT has been developed to give similar functionality. This was trialled on a few projects over the New Year period and has now been rolled out as a replacement for the original BOT. Just to remind members the listing gives changes to the status of articles tagged with the project template. It includes details such as good article candidate, articles up for deletion etc. the full list of workflows covered by the BOT can be seen here.
The BOT runs daily and updates the project listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/Article alerts. The BOT edit summary indicates the extent of the change so if the listing is watchlisted you can quickly tell if there is anything that may be of interest. If there are things that the BOT does not pick-up then do report them here so that they can be fixed. If you think an article should be covered by the project then add the project template {{WikiProject Yorkshire}} to the talk page of the article.

The February 2011 articles selected below are the editors choice as no one came up with any other suggestions on the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.
