(Article about me)

Hi! Nobthehobbit tells me you're Andy Saunders - nice to see you here! However, as we were discussing, the article about you should probably be moved to your user page. Users having articles about themselves is pretty discouraged unless you're really famous, which is rare. If you have any questions just let me know! Adam Bishop 04:15, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hey Adam -- for some reason my name had been Wikified in the Smart Ask article and Nobthehobbit took that as a sign that an article should be created to supplement the Smart Ask article, and proceeded to ask me for information to fill gaps in his knowledge. Feel free to begin the delete process if you see fit. --OntarioQuizzer 05:41, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi, you can add to the Votes for Deletion discussion - I think votes from anonymous IPs aren't allowed, so I don't see a problem in your case. Adam Bishop 22:25, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Jeopardy

I haven't used the Jeopardy message board; most of what I know about the show comes from watching and from personal experience. As for when I was on the show, well, since I sort of like to keep my true identity mostly separate from my online activites, I'll tell you that I will be on this month, but I won't say exactly when. That's how I was sure that Ken would lose, and that there's no "next Ken" on the immediate horizon; I'm getting sort of annoyed with people trying to get in on the ground floor of documenting then next Ken. Hopefully they'll get over it soon. Anyway, that's cool about your interview with NPR. I'll have to check that link on your page. -R. fiend 20:17, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Something like that, basically, yeah (he says with hint of evasion). -R. fiend 08:00, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Well, not to say you look stupid, but unfortunately for both of us, you are mistaken. I'm thinking you though I was Grayson perhaps? Poor guy, had one of the most difficult Final Jeopardys I've ever seen. But he won two other games so I don't feel bad for him at all. Now I'm curious as to how you're narrowing it down.-R. fiend 19:16, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Ah, I see. That's the tricky bit. The R is a red herring. It doesn't stand for my real name. In fact, I don't really know where it comes from. -R. fiend 15:50, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Re: Question for you

Actually, I'm not Scott Green, if you were wondering. Why do you ask me? (Post on my talk page, of course) --Super-Magician 22:31, Dec 6, 2004 (UTC)

We meet again!

Hey Andy. Paul Paquet here. Funny running across you on Wikipedia! Anyway, I'm listed here as User:Paul From Ottawa

For what it's worth,

I see you changed the Ultimate Tournament of Champions page to say Jeopardy! announced the tournament on the 28th. While KABC, and many other wire outlets, leaked the story then, the press release on Jeopardy.com says the 29th. Think I should make a note that it was leaked a day early, and that Sony confirmed it on the 29th, or leave as is? Ral315 05:00, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, that'd be fine.

I'm changing the wording of the U-TOC article now. It was kind of hard to put into words, so if you can find a better way, go ahead. Also, if you have rmfromfla's list, you can go ahead and post it- I just compiled all the tournament and $50,000 winners, so it's not horribly accurate. Ral315 14:47, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Zerg

Glad you approve. I don't know what a previous merger was thinking; seemed he was throwing that information into a random section, creating a non-sequitur and a lot of repeated information, after I previously made a strong effort to remove all redundancies, of which there were several. Anyway, I think the information is well set now. Some will still argue that Zerg should have her own article, but I have a feeling she's already been forgotten by everyone except us few who have been editing her article here. The redirect does the job. -R. fiend 06:09, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Agreed. An article should be devoted on Nancy Zerg, although she got beat the next day. Even Alex Trebek described her as a "giant killer".--Hanfei 23:41, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, seeing as Nancy Zerg had an article, and it was redirected to the Jennings article by a consensus vote of Wikipedians, I highly doubt you'll be able to put in an article about her without it being speedy-deleted. In other words, she'll have to do something else that makes her warrant inclusion on its own for her to make it into Wikipedia. --OntarioQuizzer 08:17, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

There is an interesting discussion over on VfD for the bio-article for German demoscene musician and artist paniq. I was hoping you could enter a comment or vote after reading through and reviewing the article. -R

Thank you for your comments. ^_^

Re. UTOC template

Looks great! I had thought of including a J-Archive summary on the table, but I didn't think it'd look right. Guess I was wrong :-) ral315 02:45, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

Another thing: I cannot edit the UToC template on Thursdays until about 9:00 EST, and Fridays really depend on the week. If you're not doing anything, I'd appreciate you taking care of the results on Thursdays and Fridays. ral315 01:05, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)
P.S. - Great game, huh?
Yeah, it's even worse than a dicdef, because the only people who would go to it are people referred from the UToC page. Kind of ironic, really. ral315 03:46, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

No problem- I know what he was trying to do, but there's no need to do it until Round 2. Not to mention that he didn't know the purpose of the Templates. ral315 20:31, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Walsh and Weikle

I'm not sure about these. A while ago, during discussions on cleaning the Ken page I suggested a separate page on game show records. I don't suppose anyone actually started such a thing? I'm not quite interested enough in the subject, though I could probably do a bit of research on the few quiz shows I'm interested in (basically the sort of stuff that's already catalogued elsewhere in WP). Anyway, I think such an article would be an ideal place for this information, especially now that the records are broken. More notable than either of these I think are a few of the "Millionaire" guys, mostly John Carpenter, who doesn't seem to have an article. They had a much wider audience. -R. fiend 00:07, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

OntarioQuizzer: It's a tough one. It's true, they don't have much fame outside the Jeopardy world, but then again, we have articles for lesser people. I would lean delete- if you nominated them for VFD, I'd probably vote delete, but I'm leaving the call on whether to VFD it to you. ral315 02:41, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Ken

Can I get your input on a disagreement on a sentence in the Jennings article? At the bottom of the talk page there's a discussion. If you could give your opinion I'd appreciate it. Anyone else you know who might be interested would also be welcome to speak up. -R. fiend 04:56, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ken Jennings' Placement

I could bet you $100 that you would find almost as many people opposing the Jennings bye than people who support the bye. Look on my page and see if you don't have a response when you argued about it on my page. Shake on the bet, OntarioQuizzer?--Hanfei 00:53, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

David Madden

If I would have realized that the end of the season was so quick, I would have left it up. I just figured that by the time VFD went through, he might have already passed 15-20 wins. ral315 13:17, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Always happy to help when it comes to a VfD of a useless article. This one is particularly bad as most of the article is just Alex saying the words "Ken Jennings" in relation to Madden. Should we include everyone who's ever been refered to as "Einstein"? I'd like to get somewhere with my Game show records proposal, but there doesn't seem to be too many people who are interested in putting effort into it, and I'd rather not do the thing too half-assed. Maybe Madden will be the next Ken, but I doubt it, and I'm content to wait and see. Anyway, when are you going to be on Jeopardy? Seems you're ready; you should go for it. I gave TacoDeposit some pointers and I'd be happy to give you some as well (if you want pointers from someone who didn't get a single win). My next aim is to be on "Millionaire" (where buzzer speed isn't an issue) but I've passed the test twice but been rejected as a contestant both times. Well, take care. -R. fiend 21:04, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

Someone will probably get around to doing something about the Madden Vfd pretty soon. The whole 5 days thing is a minimum, and as VfD has grown so has the backlog. If I were an admin I'd probably help with it a bit, though as an active participant in the Madden VfD it would likely be seen as a conflict of interest had I closed it (all moot, not being an admin). As time goes by Madden is getting more notable, though I still don't really support an article for him at this stage. I find the guy sort of unappealing and mildly irritating, and I'm hoping he loses, but that's not releveant to the VfD. -R. fiend 19:17, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
Well, there isn't alot that can be done. I find it unfortunate that admins generally do not (and perhaps cannot) take the reasons for votes into account when tallying, and I have seen articles kept with worse reasoning. The upside is that although Madden certainly wasn't worthy of an encyclopedia article when it was written, he is now perhaps a borderline case, in my opinion. Likewise his article now says more than "Alex compared him to Ken! Wow!" Maybe if he keeps winning and becomes somewhat known outside of Jeopardy fans (though I don't see him rivaling Ken in this respect, even if he surpasses his record; after all Brad Rutter beat Ken handily but certainly doesn't match him for fame) we'll both agree his warrants an article. Then I'm sure all the keep voters will use it as "proof" that we were "wrong" when we voted to delete, because as you can tell, some people just don't get it. -R. fiend 06:37, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

VFD

Well you can just remove that from your page if he does it again...I've reverted it now. (Of course, if he does it again, that would be a bigger problem...let's just assume it was a simple lapse in judgement for now.) Adam Bishop 16:50, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Tom Walsh

"No Consensus" 'defaults to "Keep", but says nothing regarding any actual notability. Currently, I'd say he has limited notability outside of the Jeopardy! world -- and larding his description with "notable" doesn't help (examine the listing of names, and see how many have that adjective added). --Calton | Talk 05:43, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Whether this guy has an article is utterly unrelated to whether he deserves to have his birthday commemorated: he's a second-rate quiz-show winner whose birthday means nothing outside his own family -- no newspaper in North America or the world (except in his hometown, possibly) is going to mark it, no almanac is going to list it, and no morning radio announcer on Planet Earth (except in his hometown, possibly) is going to mention it as part of his morning patter. Your blather about AfD is immaterial: YOU yourself said he has limited notability outside of the Jeopardy! world, and nobody really disagreed with you. Your phony "notable" appellation notwithstanding, he doesn't belong on the list of births. --Calton | Talk 14:24, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

Jeopardy

Hey OQ, I was wondering about something today, and I thought you might be the guy to ask. Jeopardy had a returned losing contest, brought back because of a problem with her Final Jeopardy question last year. I checked the archive, and couldn't put my finger exactly on what was wrong with it. I was particularly curious because I remmebered that question and I think i came up with the same response she did. Do you have any idea what the deal was? Was her answer technically correct as well? Or was the question they asked flawed because the the "six months" they mentioned was not exact? If you have any idea or thoughts let me know. I've become quite curious. I've never seen this happen before. -R. fiend 05:25, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Wanted to answer your concern on the Robert Denning article here to be sure that you saw it. I did not pick up on the talk page post until I found it Googled...sorry Doc 16:12, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

I feel somewhat suspicious that this might be plagairized from somewhere. --OntarioQuizzer 15:10, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

On the contray, it is similar to the material posted at Find-A-Grave which I also wrote. Some of the material included was where I was quoted by the New York Times in his obituary. Doc 16:04, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

ToC?

Do you know if there's going to be a Tournament of Champions this year? I was thinking there might well not be, since between Ken's run and the multi-month Ulitmate ToC there were few opportunities for 5+, 4, or even 3 time champs. Madden can't even qualify, as he was champ at season's close. any info? Thanks. -R. fiend 01:04, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Greatest Jeopardy Champs

I think it should be moved to a different title and majorly revised, but not sure if deletion is advisable. Partially because I'm pretty sure an AFD will not succeed. Anyway, I glanced over the article and didn't notice any glaring factual problems. It's not well written though. Why not take a stab at making it worthwhile. If nothign can be done we can think abotu a redirect or an AFD. -R. fiend 02:29, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I have to admit, I don't have the Jeopardy knowledge you do, so most of those errors passed me by. Had I thought about it, I guess I would have known that there was at least one other 6+ champ. As for Spangenberg, wouldn't that have been true if they had adjusted for the doubling of values? Well, anyway, I think your total revamp of the article is fine. Sort of makes it useless, but useless is better than erroneous. Being pretty useless, though, it's probably best to remove the link to it from the Jeopardy article. Anyway, on another subject, I guess they're not doing a ToC this year? I sort of suspected not, after the Ultimate tournament last season, but I was heavily rebuked when I suggested this on the Ken talk page earlier. -R. fiend 18:50, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

It might be useful to take all, say, 4x or more champions and stick them on that page. Do any of the J! boarders have a full list? (Also, it does need a new title if we decide not to try AFD) Ral315 (talk) 00:02, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Saugeen Stripper

A redirect to the hall is perfectly in line with the close closure of "no consensus" for the article. I've redirected it again. -R. fiend 20:01, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Ontario, See, my concern here is I just want process followed. If deletion review says merge redirect, delete, or relist, fine. Whatever. it irritates me that R Fiend is taking misusing his power to force this issue which has been through some odd 150+ comments in 2 AfDs. I worry that having the illegal redirect actually redirecting to valid info it will further his illegaly made case. The whole system just sucks (pardon my french). I'm really disappointed by the way the process has just broken down, and there is seemingly no one who can or will enforce it. I know you favor deletion, but I respect that you stand aside me in wanting process followed. I wish others did. Phantasmo 21:20, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Response to comments elsewhere

To respond to your comments on User talk:Johnleemk (I have also posted this there):

WP:NOT a democracy. From Wikipedia:Consensus,

Precise numbers for "supermajority" are hard to establish, and Wikipedia is not a majoritarian democracy, so simple vote-counting should never be the key part of the interpretation of a debate. When supermajority voting is used, it should be seen as a process of 'testing' for consensus, rather than reaching consensus. The stated outcome is the best judgment of the facilitator, often an admin.

AfD is about the comments more than about votes. The comments were convincing to a facilitator who used his best judgment and properly determined that there was no consensus. -- Jonel | Speak 01:17, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

77th Academy Award Nominees

The difference between that list and the crash victims, IMO, are that the Oscar nominees are independently notable (being major films), and were notable for that reason before becoming nominated, whereas the crash victims were not independently notable. --Andy Saunders 16:51, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

The argument I was addressing was about it being a static list, not about notability. If he had been arguing about notabilty I would have used an article like Karlovy Vary Award Winners 2005 as my example, but he did not address the issue of notability whatsoever. I recently started contacting media outlets across Canada, to try and arrange article/interviews about the upcoming 1,000,000th article on the English Wikipedia. The Guelph Mercury's managing editor has agreed to doing a piece, and wants someone from (now or before) Guelph.

You seem like the ideal person for them to interview. You have made lots of contributions to the project, you're currently active, obviously literate (something so many other Wikipedians lack), you're a member of Wikimedia Canada, and you don't try and push POV on the projects.

Would you be interested? Pretty please? -- user:zanimum, Nick Moreau, Canadian rep for the Communication Committee, of the Wikimedia Foundation

I saw your vote on Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Olympic conventions. I'm generally not one to lobby for any sort of vote, but I'm hoping that if you based your decision entirely on the fact that Gene nominated the page for deletion that you would reconsider. I think there's a strong argument to move the page to the Wikiproject space and/or delete the page, especially given Jared's handling of certain decisions. Sue Anne 22:56, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, OntarioQuizzer/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections are right now.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, please see the IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

I'm trying to cut the article down to size in preparation of possibly making a run at Featured Article. Could you (and possibly some Jeopardy message board members, if they're interested) do some fact-checking before I split a few of the areas off into different articles? A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I know you better than to give you a template-type message, but ...

Thank you very much for your support for my recent RfA, which I'm quite happy to announce has passed with a consensus of 67 supporting, 0 opposed and 0 neutral. I'm glad I meet your criteria. Most of all, I'm glad you took the time to evaluate my candidacy, as I believe that's what keeps RfA running smoothly, and I'll be working hard to justify the vote of confidence you've placed in me. Please let me know at my talk page if I can assist you with any admin-related tasks, or just if you have any comments on my performance as an admin. Thanks! TheProject 02:22, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

WP:WHMT

Hello. You may or may not remember this, but some time ago you signed up for a Hangman Tournament hosted here on Wikipedia.

For some reason or another, you were placed on the "potential players" list.

The next tournament is about to start, and I was just wondering if you were still interested in participating. If you are, please go to the page (linked above) and bold your name in the sign-up list. This will confirm your registration, and move you to the next slot on the waiting list. If you are not interested any more, please feel free to remove your name from the list. If you haven't responded within 7 days, I will assume you are not interested, and remove you from the list. However, if you are too busy, go to the page anyway and renew your "busy" notice. This shows that you are still interested in the tournament, but still are to busy to participate at this time.

If you think anyone else may be interested in this tournament, please drop them a note and ask them to sign up. Good luck, and I hope to see you at the tournament! If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka Talk to me! 13:56, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!

A recent AfD

Thank you for bringing the article on that landscape architect to AfD. I had been thinking about doing that for ages, now you did it so I won't have to. It seems you wikibreak is over at least partly, hope you heal well. // habj 09:42, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
