A tag has been placed on File:Chasamsofer.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Articles for creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 2458 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our help desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions. Plus, reviewing is easy when you use our new semi-automated reviewing script!
Thanks in advance, Nathan2055talk - contribs

GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Hello WaterwaysGuy. Per the sourcing you have found, I have withdrawn the nomination for deletion and closed the discussion as speedy keep at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jewish Ideas Daily. Thanks for demonstrating this topic's notability, and also for improving the article. Northamerica1000(talk) 22:22, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron/Rescue list, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron/Rescue list (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron/Rescue list during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Courtesy note

I thought I'd just drop you a note to explain something you might have viewed as a bit of an anomaly. Today I commented on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Harlow skatepark (one of yours) noting my involvement with Wikipedia:WikiProject Skateboarding as a reason for not lodging a !vote. Last week, though, I !voted Keep on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Blind Skateboards (also one of yours) but without any such caveats. It was closed today as Keep after my comment and one other. I thought you might think my lack of a declaration in the first one was a bit strange/bad faith. Truthfully, your Blind Skateboards AFD prompted me to re-write that article and then query why so many of it's "friends" were in bad shape. I ended up at the WikiProject and have since launched an effort to "revive" the Project. I'm not sure if these two AFDs were just part of your routine patrol or whether you have a particular interest in skateboarding-related articles. If it's the latter, your expertise would be most welcome at that Project. Anyway, just thought it could do with some explaining. Cheers mate, Stalwart111 03:44, 7 December 2012 (UTC).

Hello Stalwart111, and thanks for all of the information. I appreciate your work and ideals to revive Wikipedia:WikiProject Skateboarding, and thanks for creating the new Harlow Town Park article. Harlow skatepark was nominated for deletion for not meeting WP:N. Perhaps a merge into the new Harlow Town Park article would be in order, since the Harlow skatepark topic may not have enough coverage to merit a standalone article. Northamerica1000(talk) 07:48, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the barnstar - very nice of you! It's going to be a team effort - just a matter of getting a team now. Ha ha.
Yes, the nomination was certainly justified. It would be good to keep the info in some form but there is certainly an argument to be made that it does not need its own article. We'll see what others say but I'm keen to get it to a better point in whatever form it takes. Cheers, Stalwart111 08:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC).

Pelco Page - Primary Source Help

Hello I tried to create and submit a article on Pelco Inc or Pelco by Schneider Electric now.. (www.pelco.com). I realize the importance of primary source documents to ensure there is no manipulation of information or false information posted on the most accurate encyclopedia ever made! I have tried since my initial submission to find more reliable sources but I am uncertain if they meet your criteria even after reviewing the rules provided. For example this news website: http://www.fresnobee.com/2010/10/31/2139523/clovis-based-pelco-to-take-on.html talks about the integration of Pelco to Schneider (Is this site worthy of citation?) In college this would not fly as a primary source or reliable source for the majority papers I would write. Conversely, there is almost no physical literature, .edu's or .org's with information about Pelco's early history, and a lot of questionable content out there describing Pelco's more recent history. From what I read, Wikipedia also prefers not to have many sources from the company's website to help prevent advertisement/business oriented pages..So I tried to stay away from using their content, but I'm at a loss as to where to find more reliable content on Pelco than their actual website. Any suggestions / advice would help very helpful. I would like to create this page because I've been in the security camera business for awhile, I feel like Pelco has been a big part of the american security industry and that the brand will die out sooner than later and I think its worthwhile information. All advise / suggestions would be great, Thank you! Aruegger (talk) 15:07, 11 December 2012 (UTC) Andrew

  • Hello Aruegger. Primary sources are usable to verify information in articles, but independent third-party secondary sources are the standard for building Wikipedia articles. See also: WP:42. Company-produced information, such as press releases and PR are typically considered primary sources. The Fresno Bee article you provided above is a fine usable secondary source. A great place to start in finding sources is Google News archive and Google Books. Check out these search links, and note that by removing the quotation marks and changing the criteria in the search box around on the resulting pages, additional results can often be yielded:
Here are some secondary sources I found after some source searching:

Are we losing you to the dark side, NA?!?! Well, at least we convinced you on that one.--Milowenthasspoken 22:31, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Turns out that The Users (band) was proven to at least meet WP:N, so I withdrew the nomination. I avoid taking sides or viewing Wikipedia as partisan, because I feel it can typecast and stereotype editors in negative manners. These types of preconceptions can then lead to prejudice. I'm actually very cautious about articles I nominate for deletion, because it's dysfunctional to make faulty nominations that waste people's time. If more people actually followed WP:BEFORE, AfD would be a much more functional area of Wikipedia. Northamerica1000(talk) 22:41, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Peer review on WP:Brands

I have six volunteer-written GAs in the review queue and about five COI projects where the client seems on-board with taking it to GA. My goal is to make GA a standard for most articles I write.

I noticed WP:Brands has a peer review to get a second opinion for GA preparation and Wikiproject Companies doesn't appear to have one. Is it acceptable to use it for individual company articles or is that off-topic, it being more about branding in general than individual brands? CorporateM (Talk) 13:29, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

I've created an internal peer review page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Brands/Peer review; check it out! Regarding peer review for companies, since WP Companies doesn't appear to have an internal peer review, you should probably post your articles for discussion at Wikipedia:Peer review. Company topics appear to be generally outside of the scope of the new WikiProject Brands project, although they are related, since many companies produce various product brands. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:12, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
aww that should work. In some cases I know it's not quite ga yet (corporate speak and such) but I need someone to provide the feedback. Peer review looks perfect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.224.134.17 (talk) 01:32, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Brand project question

I see you added the brand project tag to Harley-Davidson Tri Glide Ultra Classic. I removed it because I just can't understand why you would tag an individual product like that. Surely HD is the brand? Of course I'm quite likely wrong so do feel free to change & clarify. --Biker Biker (talk) 11:48, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Biker Biker. Per the Wikipedia Brand article, "Marque[1] or make[2] are often used to denote a brand of motor vehicle, which may be distinguished from a car model."
HD is the company, and it produces the Tri Glide Ultra Classic make model of trike. Essentially, the make is a brand company. (Notice how Make (automobile) redirects to the brand article.)* Additionally, sometimes there is some overlap, such as for example, golf ball manufacturers, who often sell products under the same brand name as their company name. I believe the template was placed correctly in this case. I'd like to know what you think after this explanation, so please reply. Thanks!
Sources
Northamerica1000(talk) 12:03, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Your call, but it's tenuous in the case of bikes IMO, I wouldn't think Triglide is a brand at all, just a model. Are you saying that you plan to tag the project on every single motorcycle article? --Biker Biker (talk) 12:13, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
In conventional usage, the make typically refers to the company and the model refers to the particular model, which in this case would would seemingly correspond with the it being a brand made by a company. Automobiles and motorcycles are somewhat different than other products in their classifications. For example, Heinz Tomato Ketchup is clearly a brand made by the H. J. Heinz Company. Regarding motor vehicles, it can be more ambiguous. Also, it appears that the Wikipedia Brand article may possibly be somewhat incorrect, because "make" typically refers to the company, while "marque" refers to "a brand or make of a product (as a sports car)" (per the Merriam-Webster link above). Lastly, I just wanted to say that Trikes are cool! Northamerica1000(talk) 12:34, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Also, I'm not planning on tagging every motorcycle article, because for starters many of them are not about specific brands/models. Furthermore, I'll start a discussion on the project's talk page regarding these matters. Northamerica1000(talk) 12:46, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
*Addendum: This may simply be due to the redirect target currently being the closest fit. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:26, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Nice one. I'll take a look and join in, thanks. --Biker Biker (talk) 16:01, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Michael: Thanks for the holiday cheer. I just noticed from your user page that you have an article (Michael Q. Schmidt). Quite surprising; I had no idea! Have an enjoyable holiday season, and a happy new year! Northamerica1000(talk) 10:18, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 23

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Brand valuation, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Sufficiency, Objectivity and Transparency (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DYK non-response

Over 11 days ago, you were notified of issues with your nominations of Template:Did you know nominations/The Heroine and Template:Did you know nominations/Mercedes-Benz W142, but have not yet responded. As these are fundamental problems, if they are not addressed, the nominations will have to be declined. I hope you can reply at these soon to let us know your plans for getting them fixed. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:07, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

DYK response!

Hello BlueMoonset. I've withdrawn these two nominations on their respective pages. I'll be referring to Wikipedia:Did you know/Supplementary guidelines prior to making future nominations. Thanks for the reminder, and have an enjoyable holiday season. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:44, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Northamerica1000. Thanks for getting back to me, and thanks also for nominating those articles. I'm sorry they didn't work out. Sometimes you can work with the creators/expanders to improve the articles so they meet DYK standards—the editors may have additional sources (or places in the same sources) that cover the material, or additional material that could be added (if the expansion is a little short). Alternatively, a quick Google search may turn up material that you can add yourself to satisfy citation requirements. The supplementary guidelines clarify and expand on the rules page, and were a great help to me when I started submitting and reviewing; they really should be together with the main rules, but the last person to work on combining them never finished, and doesn't show up in DYK much any more. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:55, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. A short while ago an editor pointed out the Supplementary guidelines to me, and yes, they should be easier for people to access because this would prevent articles that don't qualify from being nominated, and also encourage them to be improved prior to nominations. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:58, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
I've also notified the creators of The Heroine and Mercedes-Benz W142 about the DYK nominations, and provided information about improving the articles to allow for renomination, in case they may be interested in these matters. Northamerica1000(talk) 10:36, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

This article is very close to meeting a basic qualification—only two paragraphs need citations. Perhaps you can urge the author to supply these, or find them yourself? Thanks, and have a very happy holiday season and New Year. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:06, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Also, there's a new hook request in Template:Did you know nominations/Blood donation in Bangladesh. Can you please take a look? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:12, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Invitation to Wikiproject Brands

Thanks for the invitation, but brands just aren't my area of knowledge—I was only trying to use Wikipedia to "help" (i.e. cheat) on said Logo Quiz, and I discovered that there are many brand that Wikipedia is missing. הסרפד (Hasirpad) [formerly Ratz...bo] 19:09, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

This holiday season...

Festivus for the rest of us!
Frank Costanza: "Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way."
Cosmo Kramer: "What happened to the doll?"
Frank Costanza: "It was destroyed. But out of that a new holiday was born: a Festivus for the rest of us!"
Kramer: "That must have been some kind of doll."
Frank Costanza: "She was."

This holiday season, have a fantastic Festivus!Theopolisme 15:59, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your recent wishes of goodwill.

so instead, here's a transcendent piece of

sky and a goodwill message for the new year.

Happy 2013!

Image licencing

Hi Northamerica1000. I noticed you were currently collaborating on Science in the Middle Ages. Of the three images I checked in that article, all were incorrectly licenced. Two used the PD-old tag on its own, or in conjuction with the PD-art tag. Pd-old is insufficient to cover the United States. Instead, a PD-100 tag can be used where the author died in 1911 or before (soon to be 1912). The third, File:Map of Medieval Universities.jpg, should be deleted. The 1923 edition of Shephard also need different licencing. As the Commons category indicates: "editions published after 1922 should be marked as {{PD-Old-70}} and {{PD-US-not renewed}}, as 1923 is too new for works to be PD-old in the US." I haven't yet changed this. I also haven't looked at the remaining images. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 11:31, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I changed my mind, it is the third file (Shephard 1923) that I refer to immediately after. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 11:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Also, over the past several months, I've made attempts to improve participation at the Science collaboration of the month and have worked to keep it going. Since it appears that you may be interested in it, just a reminder that you should please feel free to propose nominations at any time there. This doesn't obligate you or anyone to work on the articles. Just a friendly note, and happy editing! Northamerica1000(talk) 11:43, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I do a lot of image-related work on Wikipedia, including image reviews at MILHIST A class and FAC. My point was really to show you what might need to be fixed in future collaborations. Happy editing. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 11:55, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for the input, and feel free to stay in touch. Cheers! Northamerica1000(talk) 11:58, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
