Salicylaldehyde reaction scheme[edit]
Could you explain your basis for declaring Image:Reacción de Rap-Stoermer.png to be horribly wrong? It appears to be both mechanistically reasonable (as described) and in keeping with lots of references and "named reaction" refs. DMacks (talk) 04:27, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Of course. I must admit that on a second (and a third) re-reading I'm not so sure myself. The text makes no mention or reference of the particular reaction, but it does describe the synthesis of (unsubstituted) benzofuran (coumarone) by the reaction of salicaldehyde with chloroacetic acid (See the orgsyn ref). The image depicts salicaldehyde reacting with chloroacetone. It may be that the reaction depicted is real (I'm not going to speculate into that), but it seems unnatural to talk about two reactions in the text and then show an image of a completely different one (which initially lead me to believe it was blatantly wrong, mistaking chloroacetone for chloroacetic acid). Please correct me if I'm the one who's wrong. My opinion is that the image nevertheless seems out of place with the current text. Norsci (talk) 04:49, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- In the OrgSyn, chloroacetic acid is used rather than chloroacetone, there would be a carboxyl in place of the methyl according to the image. This then decarboxylates to give the simple coumarone--that's mentioned or hinted-at in the "Merits of preparation" and other commentary in the OrgSyn entry. The image is simply talking about the alkylation and aldol-condensation stages (the named Rap–Stoermer condensation) part of the process, which is general for many different α-haloacyl compounds, not what might come later. You're right, the article wording is confusing, mixing lots of different "reactions or eventual products" ideas together. DMacks (talk) 05:02, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Now things are starting to make more sense, thank you. My initial stance was wrong (I blame a lack of sleep and "trigger-happiness") but it seems that the problem is the lack of connection between text and image. Also, the reference could be better: If I'm following you correctly, the reference for the reaction is hinted at in an anecdote in another paper? It shouldn't be nescessary to dig through the references like you have done (obviously better than me) when there should be a paper somewhere describing the very reaction in the image. Anyways, I concede - but I still hold that the text could be more relevant to the image. Or the other way, one could use an image showing one of the reactions already mentioned.
