Round of 16 or Eight Finals?

The FIBA Africa Championship website uses the term Eight Finals. Is that proper English?--Nitsansh (talk) 22:28, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I don´t know, it´s just confusing having Egypt as the winner on the main site and Kenya at the detailed results, but Egypt got a wild card for the 1995 world cup, maybe they were disqualified or something? I searched a bit now but not much found. I would say it´s normally not a reliable source but since results are hard to get for that event it´s ok. That´s what I found at google: "Kenya's biggest dam awaits cabinet approval ... The curtain comes down on Africa Women's Volleyball Championship 4pm today at Africa ... the tournament the most times (1991,1993,1995,1997,2005 and 2007) against Algeria's one in 2009. ..." Hey, you are right puerto rico is through to semis, domincan republic is as well because they still play both pur and arg and already beat ven and brazil---so only way to tie with 4 wins is with the teams they already beat. DOM is not yet qualified b/c there could be a 3-way tie w/ARG and VEN with DOM at the bottom. Marking teams who are sure of at least qualifying to World Olympic Qualifier but also have a chance to reach the semis is ambiguos. Yeah, I saw it...I struggled to make sense of it when I first read it, but it is no way something to follow, guideline wise. Now, I looked through the archive and saw that top ten games had been on the portal since 2008, so in essence, we should be following that, but I don't know... I think it's about time to get those guidelines into action or else we will continue to fall into this situation time after time. I know we've already tried to cut some elements out in the past, but we really need to be more thorough from now on...because we certainly don't want the high 200 to over 300 kB that have riddled some months. I know for a fact that Dale will put back the college game tonight because I'm sure he'll notice that it has disappeared and then we'll have revert and re-revert. Actually, that's a fair point. If you think about, when March Madness comes about, that's usually the only time we consider college basketball...it only just dawned on me there. Hey Nit. I know you don't approve my methods to find new people for the forum, anyway I hope you won't penalize the whole forum (not visiting it anymore) for what I do. Thanks Nit. The forum is still young and as you see there are a lot of things to improve, being a long term project, it's just in its very first phase but if you already find it useful right now, that's a good sign we are on the right way.

For example the Qualification thread you posted in, it's not well-finished, I just use it for me to know which threads to open some days before the event start. We will make it better for 2016, that's for sure. But if you want to help me in these days to make it better, I would be glad. I would also look for a better graphic format, since right now it's pretty plain.

About Vituzzu, what can I say. He is improving all the time, this time he made 3 mistakes in only one line. First of all, I'm NOT the webmaster, and if he still hasn't understood that after one month and more, I don't know what to do anymore.

Secondly, am I searching for google hints ? Since he has sent a hacker on the forum for some days trying to put it down the forum, he should have seen the forum and he can easily realize that there are NO advertisings, so do you think I care of having more clicks ? I just care about having more users to make the forum more interesting.

And about the last sentence, to suggest people what to do it's really fantastic and he is really specialized on that. Especially if he does that with a wiki user who is on wiki for what, 6 years ?

FYI Nitsansh: here you can find a short report (there's also another one on en.wiki), 150... is the forum owner, while 93... is the webmaster (as they stated on it.wiki), I wrote to the latter one since I didn't know he was aware of that spamming. It's quite funny to see how they're try to troll us (lies are quite funny, but you didn't see some sad drama). 3AM for me is not unusual... the deal is quite simple... check out for previous championships earlier this month... you would find a line like this: team X qualify for tournament Y, in which X is the name of the nation, and Y is the name of tournament, with link to the article of that tournament... on that article you should find the qualifying rules and the list of qualifyers, which by now is nearly complete... IIRC there are only 2 champ'ships in B'ball and the same in V'ball that are still going on and due to be completed this weekend... I trust your wisdom that you would understand how to fill the blanks then... I loooked briefly at the last two days while I was "missing" and found that 2 V'ball tourneys have concluded on these days (both Thursday IIRC) and currently these are the only events in question...

As for figure skating, also look at the events earlier this month and see the format... on each week there are 3 or 4 competitions divided between 2 days, Friday and Saturday (this was rhe format so far). There will be a total of 7 events in this series, and the current one is #5 IIRC. The top 8 in each discipline qualify to the final that will take place in early December. Please note that in the pairs discipline there are only 4 events, that's why some events have 3 competitions and some 4. Also note that skaters are only allowed to participate in 2 events during this series, so the standings line should read like this: Standings after 5 of 7 events: A (name) X points from 2 events or B Y (1). It's a bit confusing but that's the rules in this sport... as usual, look for examples in previous weeks. You should find links to both weekly results and standings on the article of the junior grand prix series 2011 (please note that this is the JUNIOR GP and it will be followed by the Grand Prix series for senior skaters). Baseball World Cup

The Baseball World Cup is the highest tournament sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and serves very much like the world cup for other sports. The difference here being that because the MLB and some other leagues (notably the Japanese league) are still in season/playoffs some of the stronger nations don't send their strongest team. Additionally, with the creation of the World Baseball Classic, which was created by the MLB to showcase MLB players and grow the game worldwide (and make some money) there is now a duality of what is the top tournament. Some would argue one, some the other, but the IBAF considers them to both be of equal standing as major tournaments. Ravendrop 10:32, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Danielle Frenkel

What's the significance to mention that an Israeli is a jew? The majority of Israelis (around 80%) are jews, and their share among sportspeople is even higher. It's not a notable fact that should be mentioed IMO. It's like mentioning that an American is Christian. I would have mentioned that in case that he/she is a practicing jew, which is very rare (from the top of my head I can think of only 2 elite Israeli sportpeople who are practicing jews) because it puts restrictions on their sport career (for example they don't practice on the Sabath and not allowed to travel, eat only Kosher food, and must wear modest clothes).

I think you excluded some important facts which you may not be aware of, because your sources don't follow Israeli sports on a regular basis... for example, her record of 1.92m in Barcelona followed 2 records in space of few minutes earlier that month at the national championships, where she bacame both Israeli record holder and national champion for the first time... it was actually the first time she made the headlines in Israel... Also you don't mention the championships she competed at and her achievements in them in the text, only in a table below. I only exhaustively searched gnews and gbooks, and only under the common spelling in English of her name, but as to gweb I did not do an exhaustive search. Feel free to add anything that is notable that is supported by RSs -- I only added material for which I had RS support in hand. As to naming the competition, that is fine to do, though you will see in track and field articles it is sometimes mentioned and sometimes not -- but you should feel free to reflect it. You should find results of major championships in official websites of the organizing bodies... IAAF for World championships, EAA for European championships etc.... did you check her IAAF profile? Also there's the top lists... though I think that her results until 2010 were still under the radar...

Did your search found articles in Israeli sources? It should also noted that since she set the latest record in March 2011 she is on a downward slope... I think her best mark for the outdoor season is 1.90 metres...Nitsansh (talk)

The triple jump was a one-day show... it was during the European Nations Cup, and she substituted the injured triple jumper to gain some points for the team... she only does that on team competitions in cases like that...

1. Could you indicate the qualifyers for the final in figure skating GP? There's one event remaining so several skaters in each discipline should be secured... usually the cut is 26 or 24 points. Take note of the tie break rules and skaters with one event remaining...
2. Do you have a clue how it was possible that Chinese gymnasts were in the top four places in trampoline men's qualifying but Japan won the team title? Isn't that a mistake?
3. Are there no results yet from day 1 of the Asia-Pacific Curling champ'ships? they must have finished many hours ago..

Finding the results is as far as I go in relation to figure skating...can't say I think of it much, and only when it is clear cut in the points PDF will I know who's in the Final; just go ahead and alter it, because I'm not really in the mood to go find the information for tie-breaks and such like. Sorry to bother you... it was a busy day for you I guess... about the figure skating, I used to follow it closely but not this year... 28 points are definitely enough to qualify and usually 26 as well, but not 100% so you should check who still has one event left and may overtake those who have finished the series... this time it was a bit more complicated because the top seeds were allowed to participate in 3 events but only 2 count in the standings... if I find the time and will I will look closely into it... in previous years I recall that qualifyers were indicated in bold on the wiki article but last time I checked it wasn't... about gymnastics... it just puzzled me because I saw the qualifying results with Chinese in 1-2-3-4 and wondered how could they not win the team title...--Nitsansh (talk) 08:39, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Sailing Classes Page Structure

I don't understand why you have moved the 470 world championship data from the main class page. There are well over 100 Sailing World Champions a year in sailing. You will get people to contribute to one main page about there class diluting with millions of sub pages means things become outdated there a couple of big pages trying to list all sailing World Champions they simply aren't maintaned. I have spent a lot of time formatting World data can this be talked about before you undo a lot of work. User Talk:Yachty4000 —Preceding undated comment added 14:02, 22 December 2011 (UTC).

There was a page on 470 World Championships, I didn't create it. It makes no sense to me that the same information should be on both pages. In most sport articles I know of, major events such as World Championships have a seperate page from the sport/discipline general pages, that should deal with general aspects, not lists of medal winners that take most of the article. I don't see why it should be different in sailing. The fact that some (possibly most) pages currently include those lists don't mean it should be so. You can see that whoever made the World championships template intended that each class should have an article for this, but many of them remain red. Also, the big flags of host countries were very ugly in my opinion. It's not such an important item that should be four times larger than flags of medal winners. I didn't see such flags anywhere else. It was even more ugly that some rows had flags and others didn't. I took the time to add the missing flags and also many missing links. To be honest all the table come from coding I copied from elsewhere on wikiedia as I am no computer or html expert. The flags bring colour but I can see that they are quite large and will make them smaller in the future. The problem with sailing is that I can name well over 100 World titles each year which makes it unique. I would prefer to move the 470 World Champions page onto the class page. This link explains the number of World Champions International_Sailing_Federation#ISAF_Classes_World_Championships I dont want to see another 130 pages minimum and probably near to 400 if each title had a page this template would look exactly the same Template:Sailing_worlds as Template:International_Sailing_Federation_Classes except maybe 300 duplicates if each title had a page. I don't see where are the hundreds of classes that you refer to... there are just some dozens I know of, and not all have articles yet... however, it makes no difference... if there is no info on classes except for results of championships maybe they don't deserve an article. There are 100 ISAF Classes See Template:International_Sailing_Federation_Classes each entitled to a World Championship they then have additional Worlds based on gender, age and discipline there are about 25 more titles awareded by ISAF. I am not sure where your low number came from. I hope this explains my why seperate pages seems like an unwise idea. Yachty4000 (talk 12:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

If you think one class doesn't deserve it's own article, it's possible to group several classes together. For example: Winsurfer World Championships may include Lechner, Mystral, RS:X and whatever other classes belong to the same category. Same goes for one-person dinghy (Laser etc.), two-person dinghy (470 etc.) and so on. I think classes with 40-years history such as 470 deserve their own article, but if it's a relatively new class in international sailing (RS:X for example) probably not. Little-known classes may not deserve an article of their own. Check the guidelines in WP: Notability (events). It clearly says that routine sports events don't necessarily merit inclusion in WP.--Nitsansh (talk) 19:35, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I find it a little scary that any officially sanctioned World Championship recognised by a IOC federation could be considered routine and therefore not worthy. My own conclusion is that you have recognised the larger number of sailing world championships. With so many classes such as the (420, Cadet, Europe, Flying Junior Dragon, Snipe, RS Tera, Musto Skiff, Farr 30, Farr 40, X35, X41, One Metre, Marblehead, etc) having these results on there class page I plan to stick with this convention. If other wikipedia users want to maintain duplicate data then I will not delete them but was hoping you would come to the same conclusion. Lots of pages isn't the answer to making wikipedia readable or maintainable. Yachty4000 (talk 15:25, 4th January 2011 (UTC)

That I fully agree with but no other sport I can name has so many World Championship and that is because sailing is both equipment and discipline based sport.
