Thanks for uploading Image:Electoral map.png. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Electrosensitivity page
Hi Mysid, thanks for checking the ES page for NPOV. I've added references to cover your citation request. I'm a bit uncomfortable about describing it as "rare"; it certainly is in its severe form but in Sweden figures of 2-5% of the population are given (and some sources claim even higher, though this seems to me to be unverified) - stats are in the main text. Libreville
Ah, I thought the CIA map was fair use, rather than public domain, so there's no automatic reason to prefer the GFDL version. However, I do prefer the GFDL map, as it shows only what is relevant to the article - the location of the city within Gabon - and does not require the reader to search for Libreville among many other towns. The GFDL map also has the advantage that it is part of a series used on most other articles on cities in Gabon, and indeed across Africa. Warofdreams talk 00:09, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

- Hi! Thanks for the compliment. I draw them using CorelDRAW, which is a vector graphics editor. It's getting easier, but a complicated flag takes still a lot of work. There are ready shapes for e.g. stars, rectangles and circles in the software, and the rest can be made by hand. If there's a bitmap flag available I may draw the vectors on a layer on top of it. I use guidelines and grids heavily to make the flags as accurate as possible, and I often dig the official measures and colors from FOTW. I export them as SVG and edit them slightly using a text editor, as CorelDRAW for some reason always uses the CMYK color space. –Mysid(t) 06:49, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

SVG questions
I know you've done a lot of great work creating SVGs. As I'm just getting started creating SVGs for Wikipedia, I have a couple questions.
First, do you know of a way to make multilingual text labels in an SVG? I'm making a map of Sudan which will eventually be uploaded to the Commons, and it would be nice to make it so that English labels will show up if the image is used on the English Wikipedia and German labels will show up if the image is used on the German Wikipedia. (I've asked this question at Commons talk:Transition to SVG, but I'm not sure if that was the right place, and I'm not sure when I'll get a reply.) If there isn't a nice way to make multilingual SVGs, then I think I'll just make text labels in several languages and set the "style" attribute of all but one language to "display:none". This way a speaker of a different language can just change two style attributes and get a differently labeled map.
My second question is whether there is some documentation somewhere that gives a list of what fonts are installed on the Wikipedia servers, so that I know what I have to work with in SVGs. It would also be nice to have a guide to Wikipedia's Unicode support in SVGs. For example, I want to include an H with a cedilla in my text labels (as in AL BA?R AL A?MAR), but I've tried both U+1E28, which doesn't show up at all on Wikipedia, and an H followed by U+0327, which just shows up as a normal H. I've thought about converting the text to a path, but that destroys the editability of the label.
If you can help me with either of these, that would be fantastic. Otherwise, perhaps you know of a better place to ask. —Bkell 19:43, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! Quite interesting and difficult questions. I have had problems with fonts and unusual characters, too, in Image:Orion-guide.svg, when I tried to include the α's and β's as text. It didn't quite work, so I ended up rendering them as curves, as you can see in the file history. I've tried to find a font listing as well, but to no avail. Thus I guess the support for different fonts is minimal. (Are you using the correct encoding, e.g.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>in the beginning? I just noticed there's such a tag, and though it might be of help.) As for multilingual SVG's – they would be a great thing to have. I don't know how they could be implemented in Wikipedia, though. The style tag is a good idea, but can't be modified when included in different articles. –Mysid(t) 06:54, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm specifying utf-8. Characters like A and U show up just fine (see Image:Bkell-test.svg for example). It's the unusual ones like ? that don't work. Most likely this is just a case of insufficient Unicode support. It frustrates me that Unicode is 15 years old and I still run into lack of support for it. Thanks for your help. Clam questions

I've tagged this image with a no license tag. The original tag you placed, {{gfdl-self}} was inappropriate. You may not be aware; redrawing a work yourself does not grant you rights to release it under gfdl. If this were the case, then anyone could take any logo of any sports team for example and create their own line of logo items, making a bunch of money in the process. In cases such as these, the original copyright holder retains rights. I tried to establish what the copyrights were of this particular image, but the closest I came was [1]. - I am in the understanding that United States city flags are not copyrightable. I checked Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems, which stated that if an emblem is defined in an official law, code, or regulation, it cannot be copyrighted. - I feel inclined to comment on this discussion: Mysid's original GFDL-self here was simply the licensing he applied to the vector image he created himself. Maybe PD-self would have been more appropriate, since that means he does not claim any rights on the design etc? In any case, using Durin's reasoning here, we couldn't have hardly any city/municipal flags (or coats of arms/seals) on any Wikimedia project, since most designs are either copyrighted, trademarked or otherwise protected by law in various jurisdictions. Without clear general guidelines on this issue, zealous admins like Durin will continue to delete such images. --Himasaram 13:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree we should have clear guidelines on this matter. For example, the FOTW people have drawn quite a lot of US city flags and licensed them for non-commercial use only, so I guess there is no problem in me licensing flags created by myself under the GFDL, either. Wrong picture
I just wanted to inform you (as I was advised to do [2]) that the album artwork: Giant-alien-force-cover.png does not coincide with the album artwork displayed on the official homepage of the artist [3]. No articles in the english wikipedia link to the image any longer and I have marked it for deletion.

- If you're talking about Finland's economy, then kind of yes, Nokia phones have been a major part of the exports. Not the biggest part, though. Finland also exports metals, wood, and vehicles. Some years ago Nokia was also trying to blackmail the Finnish government to cut the taxes, "or we'll move abroad". But they haven't done that for a while (and the government only cut taxes on booze). So I don't think they "run Finland" in any other way now. I'm somehow disgusted by the company and it's in my personal boycott. –Mysid(t) 06:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Optical disc writing request
Since you seem to be well-versed on the subject ([4] and particularly [5]), would you mind also expanding the coverage of the physical process of disc writing (perhaps at optical disc authoring, on whose talk page I made a request for it)? The CD article talks a bit about CD-Rs and -RWs, and the DVD-R/DVD+R/etc. articles give very brief descriptions of the specific dyes and such, but I can't find any general/central description of the process(es). RTTY
Hi,
I read your article on RTTY and I wanted to have more information on this stuff. Actually I am trying to developp a small software to decode RTTY messages and I had a few questions to ask you.
1 : How is the message coded ? I mean I understand the global codage with two frequencies and the fact that each character are coded with 5 bits (using the Baudot code). But how the decoder knows when the message is starting ? I mean if it loses one bit how it can not shift all the message ? Is is any "starting" code at the beginning of the message ? Are there also a starting code and stop code at the beginning and the end of each group of five bits?
2 : How did you generate the signal avaiable on Wiki?

- These things should indeed be explained in the articles. I thought they were... but I'll try to explain them here. I'll also reply by e-mail as you asked.
- Firstly, there are already many programs available that are able to decode and encode RTTY very well. But if you really want to create an own one:
- 1) There isn't any special code to tell when the message starts. Usually the human operator notices it when the output starts making sense (or when s/he hears it). The receiver keeps itself synchronized using the sync bits in the transmission. Every 5-bit byte is padded by a start bit and 1.5 stop bits, if I remember correctly. Knowing this, if the receiver loses a bit, it will lose the whole character, but is able to resynchronize during the next characters. You can probably find out what the start and stop bits are by examining the transmission on an FFT display.
- 2) I created it in a Linux program called gMFSK. Many such programs are available on other OS's, too – just try googling for "rtty software". –Mysid☎ 07:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome, Mysid, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

- The source picture Image:Finland 1996 CIA map.jpg contains some kind of a grid, but it's not rectangular so I find it difficult to come up with a function which would convert from degrees to pixels. But I'm working on it. :) –mysid☎ 10:24, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- I can try to to estimate the geographical location of the bottom corners. It will be fairly simple to transform the the map by using the 24th meridian as the mean meridian and do a projection change to a more suitable projection...but I must say that it would have been so much easier if the world was flat. :) --MoRsE 10:46, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

I just spotted your change to my userpage of the gif image to the newer svg one. I have just been through my talk pages and archives to remove others. I don't know if you are engaged in clearing all uses of the image out? But if so note that User:Yorkshire Phoenix (194.203.110.127) used the image in his talk page signature when leaving messages. He was a prolific writer, so you will find a considerable amount of multiple entries on a large number of separate talk pages.
