Page move[edit]

Hello and thanks for contacting me. I have moved the page from your user space to Yonkers City Council. If you ever need assistance for moving any other sandbox pages into the mainspace, let me know and I'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 18:12, 11 June 2011 (UTC) Thanks, I love politics! I come from Yonkers so I'm very happy about this. =] Mikeyandreality (talk) 18:14, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using the parliament tool[edit]

Hi Mikey, do you want to make the arch-shaped diagram, or the square? --Slashme (talk) 17:19, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The arch diagram is my favourite; to make one of those, go to http://drichfld.freeshell.org/perlcgi/arch.cgi and follow the instructions. If anything is unclear, please ask on my talk page. I'm also open to feature requests and bug reports. --Slashme (talk) 17:23, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You got the input right; now you right-click on the link and say "save as", and then upload the diagram as a picture to Wikipedia. If you have Inkscape on your computer, you can fix some stuff, for example, the diagram as given looks like this:
unmodified diagram

I haven't yet implemented code to keep the parties contiguous, but with Inkscape it's really easy to fix:

modified diagram

Try it out and let me know. You might want to fiddle with the colours, for example. --Slashme (talk) 06:14, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For ways to display the diagrams, see Stellenbosch_Local_Municipality and File:Stellenbosch 2011 council seats.svg --Slashme (talk) 06:38, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again! The code that you pasted onto my talk page is in fact the contents of the SVG file. There are three ways for you to get this as an svg file on your computer:

  • If, instead of clicking on the link marked "your svg file", you right-click on it and select "save link as" (or the equivalent in the browser that you're using), you'll have an svg file that you can upload to Wikipedia.
  • You could also click on the link, and then go to "file" -> "save as" in the menu of your browser. Same result.
  • You could also cut and paste the text into a text editor (e.g. notepad or emacs) and save the file as filename.svg and upload that.

The svg file that you create can be opened by a number of different programs, e.g. Inkscape, CorelDRAW, or visio. That way you can edit it before you upload, in case you need to tweak anything. --Slashme (talk) 06:33, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So glad it works for you now: it feels really good that someone's using my program! When you upload the diagram, let me know, and if you have any problems, just ask. --Slashme (talk) 06:01, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding where to use the diagrams, any and all pages that you can improve are fine! You don't have to finish anything you start, so don't feel too much pressure. Start with something manageable, and as long as you have energy, keep it up! --Slashme (talk) 11:09, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: first one at Epsom and Ewell: Good stuff - keep up the good work! By the way, why save them as png files? Why not just upload the SVG? --Slashme (talk) 09:14, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The advantage of svg over png is that the png is made up of pixels, which you'll see when you zoom in. You can always regenerate a png from the svg, but not vice versa. Also, the svg is human-readable code. --Slashme (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Server's back up :-) --Slashme (talk) 06:22, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: how to make the square diagram: you have to copy everything in the green block into a text editor and save it as a SVG file. Then you can upload that file onto Wikipedia. --Slashme (talk) 16:44, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you're working on Windows, you can use notepad, which is built-in. Another way would be to open a command prompt (depending on your version of windows, the exact way to open a command prompt differs - basically click on the start button and run "cmd") and at the prompt, type "copy con myfile.svg", then "edit" and "paste", you should see the code of the svg file appear on the screen, and then you type Ctrl-Z to end the file. On Linux, you can just open a terminal window and type "cat > myfile.svg" , paste the text (probably use right mouse button to pull up a menu, depending on your setup) and press Ctrl-D to end the file. I hope this helps! --Slashme (talk) 20:26, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
