Talkback

G’day Melesse,

Thanks for looking after this for me. I’m inexperienced, so I’ll probably make slow progress. I am still setting up the article: Offside (2009 film). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offside_%282009_film%29

Re: Orphaned non-free media (File:Somersault_logomark_and_logotype.gif)

Melesse: The Somersault logo that I uploaded is not intended to be orphaned. It is connected to the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wikiloonwater/Somersault_Group that I've written in my User space. I'm new at this and thought I was following instructions by first creating the article in my User space, then ask an editor for approval to move it into the Main space. Can you do that? Thanks. Wikiloonwater (talk) 02:50, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

In the future, I suggest you hold off on uploading unfree images until the article is created, and use a placeholder image when you're building the article in your userspace. Melesse (talk) 05:17, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Need guidance

I stumbled upon a editor (User:Johannes003), with reviewer rights, who uploaded dozens of Tamil movie posters claiming them to be low-resolution. It is obvious those are high-resolution images extracted from web sites like indiaglitz.com. I have tagged three of the images and notified him. He is not responding. But what should I do with the rest of the uploads?Anwar (talk) 10:00, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Tag oversize fair use images with {{Non-free reduce}}. Marking them as missing evidence of permission is just...random and not quite correct. Melesse (talk) 03:28, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

En Vivo en La Carcel de Santa Martha.jpg

Hi.

So, you placed an Orphan sign in the image, my bad, shouldn`t have uploaded the file before creating the article, the article exist now, what do i do? Do i just remove the template or an admin does?.

Thanks in advance. Zidane tribal (talk) 03:27, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi there, Not quite sure why I received a msg about my uploading the above the file. I'm trying to write a biography of William Tiger Dunlop in my user space and have it used in that article. Does this constitute an orphan? I'm new to the Wiki world, so any help appreciated. I'm hoping to get the article reviewed today or tomorrow. thanksCJ_WeißSchäfer 14:16, 14 July 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by CJ3370 (talkcontribs)

File:BehiçErkin.JPG

Hi Melesse! I received your message on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BehicErkin.jpg. I will do the necessary, the more so since you seem to attach importance to this image, having received a message on it from you twice.

Here is another one which may need its accuracy to be improved. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:La_pattuglia_turca.jpg used in the article Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. This image differs on several points from the original of the painting found in New York Metropolitan Museum which may be seen at http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/collection_database/european_paintings/the_night_patrol_at_smyrna_alexandre_gabriel_decamps/objectview.aspx?collID=11&OID=110000554. I checked to see why anyone would want to upload a fundamentally modified painting of a known artist for use in a biographical wikipedia article on this artist and this image would have been edited since then by several users with no one apparently noticing its inaccuracy.

It was uploaded ages ago in Wikimedia Commons by an Italian user User:Mmm448 who cited as source a link in Hungary http://www.wga.hu/art/d/decamps/t_patrol.jpg (Web Galllery of Art created by two private persons - Emil Kren and Daniel Marx) which does not mention that it is an image containing changes from the publicly known original.

What should be about it? Regards. Cretanforever (talk) 08:33, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Seeing as how that image is on Commons, you should bring it up with an administrator there. Melesse (talk) 02:59, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Melesse, I see that you have deleted the above file as it did not have sufficient accreditation. The file is my own and has no copyright restrictions. I'm new to this and clearly did not understand, perhaps do not understand, which accreditation I should use. I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks. Houseboat41 (talk) 08:01, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Read this and follow all the instructions. Melesse (talk) 04:31, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Quickly flagging files

Please do not flag files that have been uploaded only several minutes prior, because you won't be able to tell if an article is momentarily about to be created, or if the file is indeed orphaned. --Prosperosity (talk) 04:55, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

EVA MGS

I'm not sure what the uploader was driving at...and the fair-use rationale kind of sucked, same with the Zero pic he has been warned three times. The "IDK" item in the Portion line screamed like, 'has he even played the game?' Yeah, that guy would cry harassment by me because we've clashed before, but when you don't upload the properly compliant pics...it causes editors to take notice.--Eaglestorm (talk) 16:20, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

A Favor to Ask

User:HJ Mitchell asked me to make a barnstar for him. I tried, even downloaded a new program, but ultimately failed miserably. Since you do alike of "image reduces", I assume you have some form of program to do so on. Is it possible you could create the barnstar for HJ and I? He wants the barnstar to be an "In the news barnstar" with the File:Gnome globe current event.svg superimposed in the center of File:Original Barnstar.png. Obviously the clock part of the first image would "stick out" a little bit, so that is cool, just the "globe" part needs to be in the center of the second image. From there, I can setup the coding and such for the barnstar and put it into practice (I will give you credit for the start on the main page). If you can do this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...NeutralhomerTalk • 02:36, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Fair use image

Hi Melesse, I received your message about File:Enrico Berlinguer.jpg (sorry for the delay). Actually, the file cannot be replaced by a free one: none of the pictures on Commons is a portrait, and the person is dead. The only other way to get free images would require the acceptance of the fact that the so-called "PD-Italy" is a fully and perfectly free Public Domain, in order to be able to use the free files currently in use in it.wiki's article (this acceptance would also bring to a wider popular knowledge 10,000+ other truly free images, which should certainly be safer than fair use files, as well as closer to WP's principles - but I can't do more than repeat this now and then...). So, apart from those images, the file can't be replaced by a free one. Its use in Enrico Berlinguer, btw, had already been reviewed by Moe Epsilon on 18:21, 10 February 2008 and nothing has changed after its revision. --g (talk) 15:33, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

RE:File copyright problem with File:Metal gear 2 codec 2.png

First of all I asked he previous user with how to tag a image and I gave the source but he did not reply and deleted my question, Do you know how to tag a copyright image? Whitmore 8621 --Whitmore 8621 (talk) 08:48, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

That still doesn't mean you can just go deleting maintenance tags without fixing the problem. Melesse (talk) 09:09, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah well I do not like being ignored by the informant of the image on copyright. Whitmore 8621--Whitmore 8621 (talk) 10:29, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
So are you saying that you want somebody to hold your hand and spoon-feed you answers, rather than even try to find them yourself, or else you're just going to willfully break the rules? I hope that's not the case, because behavior like that will get you blocked. Melesse (talk) 10:27, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

As a editor I would never behave like that at all, I Guarantee you that. Whitmore 8621--Whitmore 8621 (talk) 10:29, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

RE: File copyright problem with File:Great_Eastern_Run_Route.pdf

Hey, you can probably go ahead and delete File:Great_Eastern_Run_Route.pdf. I got it off the website of the Great Eastern Run and I said that it was from an organisation when I was uploading it. I don't know anything about Wikipedia's Copyright rules, but I guess that the image doesn't qualify, so you might as well delete it.

Replaceable fair use File:3 Colours Red.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:3 Colours Red.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 70.112.184.148 (talk) 00:04, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Good day! perhaps you can help me: I published an image og the official government logo for organic food in the Wikipedia article "Organic Food", and According to the page of the Danish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries it says (in danish) that the logo may be used for educational purposes and for school asignments. Would compliance with copyright issues be solved if this text in danish directly pasted in the text description as there is no official translation to english (I could translate it..) I need to have an article semi-protected

Hi. I made an article called Monster High and it's about a hot new doll line now. But unfortunately lots of anonymous users (kids, I think) are putting in content that is unencyclopedic, erroneous, or otherwise not in the neutral point of view. I want the page to be semi-protected so that only users from Wikipedia can edit it. But I don't know what to do. All I know is that an Admin can give it protection. Can you please make the article semi-protected? – Ashley

Page protection's not really an area I know much about so I'm not comfortable making that call. Make a request here. Melesse (talk) 05:18, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

File:IndexOnCensorshipLogo.png

Thank you! But shouldn't I specify the explicit source and portion, as I've re-added? --Lexein (talk) 02:01, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

You erroneously deleted my file

You deleted a file I had uploaded, Axial1.jpg on the grounds that it was not in use. Problem was, it *was* in use, in the article that I was working on, Akira Kurosawa, and was visible in that article from the day I uploaded the file, together with two companion images, similarly titled, that were also uploaded and are still visible in the article today. I forgive you, but please don't do this again!

Regards, Dylanexpert (talk) 02:10, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

File:Hakuho meiji dohyoiri.jpg

Why did you speedily delete File:Hakuho meiji dohyoiri.jpg? The fair use rationale was not invalid. The image survived an Files for Deletion debate just a few days ago. What is the point of having these debates if the outcome is just ignored? --Pawnkingthree (talk) 00:58, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

It is invalid. Hakuho is apparently still in the public eye quite a lot, therefore it's possible to get a photo of him doing a dohyo-iri. There's really no argument for why that one in particular is significant since nothing unusual happened, so another photo of the same event at another time would serve just as well. (As to your other question, maybe you want to ask the person who placed the replaceable fair use tag.) Melesse (talk) 05:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
The reason this dohyo iri was significant (as the article clearly states) was that took place at the Meiji Shrine, where a new yokozuna performs it for the first time in public. Far from being "nothing unusual" it is an event that was a one-off and is therefore not replaceable. I don't believe there was any valid reason for speedy deletion of an image that has been on Wikipedia for over three years without any problems so I will be taking it to deletion review.
