Speedy deletion of Stephen soldz[edit]

A tag has been placed on Stephen soldz requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. RayAYang (talk) 07:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hilbert's problems[edit]

The article Hilbert's problems is about a specific list of 23 problems posed by David Hilbert in 1900. None of these problems involves the notion of Hilbert space. If one did, it would be relevant to mention that in the discussion of that specific problem and add a wikilink from there. As it is, the only relationship between the Hilbert's problems article and the concept of Hilbert space is that the same person was responsible for both. Hopefully you will agree that it is not appropriate to add Serenade No. 10 for winds to the See also section of the article on Mozart's Requiem just because the former work is also due to Mozart. Hilbert was a prolific mathematician, and his name is connected to many things generally having no clear relation to his list of 23 important open problems: Hilbert algebra, Hilbert's arithmetic of ends, Hilbert's basis theorem, Hilbert basis (orthonormal basis), Hilbert basis (linear programming), Hilbert class field, Hilbert C*-module, Hilbert cube, Hilbert curve, Hilbert-style deduction system, Hilbert's irreducibility theorem, Hilbert manifold, Hilbert matrix, Hilbert modular form, Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, Hilbert number, Hilbert's paradox of the Grand Hotel, Hilbert polynomial, Hilbert projection theorem, Hilbert R-tree, Hilbert scheme, Hilbert space, Hilbert spectral analysis, Hilbert spectrum, Hilbert symbol, Hilbert's syzygy theorem, Hilbert's Theorem 90, Hilbert's theorem (differential geometry), and Hilbert transform.

Per Wikipedia:Overlinking, section What generally should not be linked:

In general, do not create links to the following.
  • Plain English words, including common units of measurement... .
  • ...
  • Low added-value items are linked without reason—such as, 1995, 1980s, and 20th century. ...

The word "twenty-three" in the article is used in its plain dictionary meaning, as it is in thousands of other articles. There is nothing to be found in 23 (number) that is of specific interest in relation to the Hilbert's problems article. The fact that 23 (number) refers to that article is not of importance, For example, the article 12 (number) duly notes that the zodiac has twelve signs, and the year twelve months, but these articles do not link back to 12 (number). It is only when a number is discussed in an article as a number that such links become appropriate, as is the case, for example, for the link to 42 (number) from the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I hope this answers your questions satisfactorily.  --Lambiam 01:49, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Soldz has returned[edit]

A new version of Stephen Soldz is now online. I am familiar with Dr. Soldz's work in psychoanalytical theory, so it was a pleasure to bring him back to Wikipedia. Cheers! Ecoleetage (talk) 19:42, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the permission given on Talk:Stephen Soldz is not enough to comply with Wikimedia policy. If you have the original email, you might consider forwarding them to WP:OTRS so that a ticket can be issued... in fact Mr. Soldz still has to email permissions-en@wikimedia.org in order to verify that releases those pictures under the GFDL, since the email you posted makes no mention of it. Once an OTRS ticket is issued, the picture can then be uploaded to commons: as well. Cheers, --Storkk (talk) 08:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:COPYREQ for more detailed information. --Storkk (talk) 08:55, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Quote: I guess you don't need going through a SHA512 commitment to understand who I really am. I've looked at your picture and i don't think i've met you, but my memory for people is rather poor. Sorry if i misunderstood you, or caused you to misunderstand me. Cheers, Storkk (talk) 14:55, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Paul Hare[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Paul Hare, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Talk page posts[edit]

I have replied to your post on Talk:Allergy. In general, making personal comments and assuming bad faith are unhelpful. Please adhere to the talk page guidelines. Thank you. JFW | T@lk 19:18, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You really must try to stick to the issues. Your post on my talkpage, including tasteless links to a Bin Laden cartoon, is really unhelpful. On Talk:Allergy an other contributor has offered some advice on how to find the necessary sources. I would suggest you follow this advice. JFW | T@lk 16:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Userboxes[edit]

Notice: All of your Userboxes should be placed underWikipedia:Userboxes#Gallery and in the sub-article accordingly. Wikipedia categorization isn't reserved for your own personal use, please stop wasting Wikipedia resources. Thanks. --Ramu50 (talk) 02:39, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ramu50 is not a Wikipedia administrator and not familiar with WP userbox policy. There's no requirement as he claims. Don't worry about it. Have a happy thanksgiving... Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 03:17, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to both Ramu50 and Georgewilliamherbert[edit]

Hi everyone,
thanks for contributing to wikipedia!
Sometimes it can be stressful to deal with people that do their best to keep this wonderful project working.
No probs.
Have a nice day.

Hi -- I don't think it is useful to readers to link words like "philosopher", "scientist", and "universe". Also it's just plain wrong to link "nebulous" to fuzzy logic. I propose to undo these changes, but in the interest of not coming across as hostile, I thought it would be nice to get your reaction first. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 17:21, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Answer to Looie496 observation[edit]

Hi Looie496,

thanks for contacting me before undoing my revision!
You seem to be a very undooing revisionist according to your latest english wikipedia contributions:
4 reverted edits on 7 in the last two days.
But please don't get me wrong!
I am a wikipedia administrator myself and I know there is loz of vandalism "out there".
So I also appreciate that you started a discussion with me telling what were your thoughts about my last three revisionson the consciousness wikipedia article.
This even if they are all negative (if not plain negative!).
Thanks for proposing me to undo these changes:
you are the very FIRST polite editor that I have encountered on wikipedia in the last SIX years writing me so nicely about undoing my changes.
Please give me 24 hours for thinking about it.
Please also consider writing something more about yourself in the meantime!

Noone is biting you...
Thanks for reading me.
(Good night? Duh? I don't even know time zone is!)

Maurice Carbonaro (talk) 21:10, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: I am posting these two messages on the consciousness discussion page too in order to try involve other editors in the next 24 hours.

could you please help out?[edit]

I am currently a graduate student, working on a semester project regarding Wikipedia. I was hoping you would be able to privately answer a few questions in reference to your personal experience with Wikipedia in order for me to get your view on the website. The questions are on my user page, and if you could answer in them in word and e-mail them to the address shown that would be really helpful. Your anonymity is assured, and any personal information you give will never be used outside of this questionnaire. Thank you for your time.Curesearcher (talk) 02:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Sure. I always try my best to help out :O)[edit]

Dear Curesearcher,

I am honestly flattered to have a graduate student contacting me for a semester project regarding Wikipedia.
I will be happy to privately answer to your following questions.
Just please register with a hushmail address and write me to:

jean-do.bauby@mac.hush.com.

I want this to be absolutely clear: I will accept NO other forms of communications right now.

Questions.

# How did you first get involved with Wikipedia?
# Why did you end up setting up an account, and what benefits/hindrances have you encountered because of your account?
# How has your editing changed since you first started?
# Tell me about how you use your watchlist page.
# How do the rules of Wikipedia affect your interactions with other editors?
# What are the elements of Wikipedia you find most helpful in interacting with other editors, and what elements you find hinder the process.

In the meantime, please have a nice and relaxed sunday.
Thanks for your attention.

Yesterday, 11 september 2009, in the revision history for the creation of the Petra Reski english wikipedia article I have motivated the creation of a new article writing:

"Created a new article freely translated from the german one de:Petra Reski.

If you think that internal translations from different wikipedia languages can't be considered "reliable enough" please feel free to cancel the partial translation I have created.

Thank you for your attention.
