Green tribology[edit]

Green tribology is a subgroup of Tribology and is related specifically to maintain an ecological balance of any potential environmental and biological impacts of the interactions between surfaces [1]. Green tribology takes care that the friction or wear of material occurs in environmentally friendly manner [2]. Its mission is to develop an advanced engineering components and procedures, to provide new and innovative green concepts, which ensure sustainable engineering impact over the whole engineering-system life cycle. The researchers formulated 12 principles of green tribology [3]:

  • the minimization of friction
  • the minimization of friction wear
  • the reduction or complete elimination of lubrication, including self-lubrication
  • natural and
  • biodegradable lubrication
  • using sustainable chemistry and engineering principles
  • biomimetic approaches
  • surface texturing
  • environmental implications of coatings
  • real-time monitoring
  • design for degradation
  • sustainable energy applications
