Can you take a quick look at this one and help get a suitable picture for the Fauna of Australia FAC? - Mgm|(talk) 20:35, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If no one can find one, there are a number of Australian photographers listed at Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Photographers. I know User:Fir0002 is very acive and has a huge gallery of Australian fauna. Probably wouldn't be able to help for an upcoming featured article, though. — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 23:32, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see you found this image easy to track. :) Can you also find a free replacement we CAN use in the article? - Mgm|(talk) 08:17, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fauna of Australia FAC[edit]

I suppose it doesn't mean much but you might want to cross out your objection there since you are supporting :) Ryan Norton T | @ | C 11:45, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Mgm![edit]

Dear Mgm, I simply wanted to drop by to thank you for the thorough copyedit you're currently making on the Texas Ranger Division article. You may have noticed that English is not my native language; hence, your proofreading is extremely valuable to me, as is your deep knowledge of the WP style as well. I never had the chance to thank you for supporting one of my other articles to FA, Spring Heeled Jack. For all these reasons, a wholehearted THANK YOU is in order. I hope we meet again, Shauri smile! 21:15, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My dear Mgm, please, don't apollogize for objecting. On the contrary, I must thank you for bringing up all those valuable points, and for your encouraging words. I find most of your objections easy to solve, so I'll get to work on the right away. A consideration regarding some of the style issues: originally, I had linked all dates, just as you did, but Tony1 suggested to remove them. Since he's a proffessional editor, I heeded his advice, but I personally prefer them just the way you did (like me at the beginning). Again, thank you so much for the input and your work, and don't forget to check it later ;) Hugs, Shauri smile! 21:47, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I have addressed all your concerns, Mgm. Please, let me know what you think of the changes I've introduced to the article's contents. Big hugs, Shauri smile! 23:58, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've got a lot to thank you for, my dear Dutch friend :) Your help in wikifying the article and your extremely valid concerns have helped improve the article a lot, and if it is closer to FA status, it is largely your responsibility. I take note of your comments on the pic, and I swear I'll try to get a better shot; the reason why I chose that one was because it was the only one with free use status I've been able to locate. Your support means a lot to me. You've earned a friend over here. Hugs! Shauri smile! 21:44, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Magictimeline and things[edit]

Hi Mgm, I'm contributing to Project Magic, and I've already written some articles on effects plus a list of conjuring terms which someone linked in the Magic box which was cool. Was that you or PhillipO or someone else. How did you do that? It was Magic! Anywayz, I noticed that the magic timeline is blank. What are you expecting here? Like a list of key dates in Magic history kind of thing. If so, I can do that for you, just let me know. Also do you want some more effects on the list of magic tricks because some magicians are saying Wiki is "what" not "how" and they don't want to share anything, mainly cos they are selfish, but I believe information should be available to anyone who wants to look it up. What do you think? MagicValentina(Talk) --MagicValentina 10:59, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya Thanks for the response. I'll try and bear in mind the guidelines. I've started the timeline. I don't think it is going to be as mega as the aviation one, just a page with some key dates, but if people want to expand that into the aviation format later then it's cool. The aviation one really goes into a *LOT* of detail, too much maybe, but that's not really for me to say as I don't know much about aviation! I'm talking to this Krass guy who has got all sorts of suggestions about the list of conjuring terms. I don't think he's really into lists, but you do get them in encyclopedias along with the text articles, because sometimes it's just the best way to explain something. Anyway, If you've got time I'd appreciate your ideas too. I think you two know much more about the formatting of these things. It's on Talk:List_of_conjuring_terms MagicValentina(Talk)--MagicValentina 23:43, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mgm! what's up? Uhhu! You really want me to lay my hands on that article? That's a quite a challenge... Forensic odontology is a very technical speciality, and I'm afraid to get carried away by my professional bias... but I guess I can deal with it :) You've got a deal, my dear Mac: I've also promised collabroation on other projects, but allow me to refresh my knowledge on the matter and I swear I'll do my best to expand it. And thanks for your trust in me! Hugs, Shauri smile! 21:30, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fierce Snake[edit]

Hi Mgm, Sorry, but I don't think I'd be able to help you out on any snake photos as the only shot of a snake I've got is one which the snake has been literally shot dead and is being cleaned out by meat ants: Image:Ants cleaning dead snake.jpg. Obviously I've seen a couple of snakes around our place, but they're not exactly things you shoot with a camera. You'd need at the very least exceptional circumstances (the snakes are usually moving and well camoflaged in grass) and a hefty telephoto (300mm wouldn't go wrong). So sorry can't help you. I'm flattered though that you thought to ask me! --Fir0002 11:24, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, my dear Mgm! I'm sorry it took me so long, but I merely wanted to tell you that I've just gathered enough bibliography to proceed with the expansion you requested me to perform at Forensic odontology. May take me a while, but I intend to at least give a little more insight and detail, and in order to catch the interest of readers, to explain a few noted cases (like the evidence presented at the trial of Ted Bundy). I'll let you know as the work progresses, so you can review it. Hugs, and have a nice day! Shauri smile! 20:47, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Cat mentorship issues[edit]

I've made some comments on the mentorship talk page about how things are progressing--it seems that Cool Cat and Davenbelle in particular are sniping at one another. Mostly it seems to be Davenbelle's doing, but Cool Cat isn't completely blameless; he's maintaining links to Davenbelle and Karl Meier (who I understand was formerly Stereotek) on his contact page, in a color that he also uses only for a big-time vandal known as MARMOT. If this seems like a petty concern, that's because it is, but it gives Davenbelle and Karl Meier, in their eyes, a continuing reason to be concerned about Cool Cat's behavior. I've made some comments on the talk page, and I'd appreciate it if as a fellow mentor you could add your own take on the situation. I've pasted this to both MacGyverMagic's and Mark Ryan's talk pages.

Myma Seldon - my reply[edit]

Had a look, and still think that it should be deleted, as she is still nothing more than a local radio host in England. Does not pass the criterias set in WP:BIO as I see it. Bjelleklang - talk 19:48, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Still not convinced, especially not as a search on google for xchange myma seldon returns 5 results, one of them being her own site. And I still don't think that being a local radio host (even if she is good-looking, or one of the best at that station) is enough to pass WP:BIO. Bjelleklang - talk 01:55, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware that google doesn't hold all the answers, or all the information on the internet, but still; they search for information amongst something like 8 billion pages. Anyway, I would not say delete on this alone, but coupled with the fact that she is essentially a local radio host, just isn't enough in my opinion. Bjelleklang - talk 11:15, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No prob. Shouting at people for disagreeing with you is never the answer, and although I don't agree, I respect your view. Bjelleklang - talk 11:29, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

interest[edit]

Ed has a history of changing codes, layouts, looks, colours, etc to suit his own preferences. He targeted the papal infobox and produced an edit box. He has been targeting another set of infoboxes lately, even though there is universal agreement to leave the set (a) as a set, and (b) with the current look. You aren't the first to experience Ed's own rewriting of codes to match his own whim. (He also likes to tell people how the code is "broken" even though no-one else can see what is broken and he doesn't give any details.) -- comment by User:Jtdirl (removed signature with faulty coding)

FAC boxes[edit]

The infobox class contains the information explicitly defined in the style tags there, and so shouldn't change the appearance at all. If they are still appearing left aligned to you, they you need to clear you browser cache to load in the new common.css stylesheet. ed g2stalk 21:49, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't contain the colour information. The colour information is in the style tag for the table row (|-). ed g2stalk 21:53, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's not the wiki cache, it's your browser's cache of the css file, it can be quite difficult to get it to reload because it's nested in a load of includes. The .infobox class is declared in the Mediawiki:common.css and basically sets the floating, clearing, margins and monobook colours. Any other styling should be done inline as it will be instance specific. ed g2stalk 21:58, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, glad to see you've ignored the above comment about my infobox contributions. As you can see, I'm not enforcing some personal preference, just stylesheet consistency. ed g2stalk 22:06, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Creationist sources[edit]

You told the creationist to quote sources, but they are probably the one class of contributor that finds it easy as they will always quote Genesis as their source! The real problem is there must be thousands of articles that would need to be modified to put the creationist view if one wanted to balance for that view. At least no-one told him to update the article itself!

Schools[edit]

Hi,

Fair question, of course. What I'd hope to see is a schools task force, made up of those who really like these articles, to at least muster each of these things up to a minimally respectable level. It would take a fair amount of work, but Kappa and crew are industrious, and I'd pick in. (Even though I don't actually like school articles, I do like repetitive tasks -- I'm simple-minded!) I do feel, though, and Kappa has said many times, that the continued threat of deletion, from those who still vote and nominate for such, distract from much effort in this area. Certainly, that could be a "cop-out", but (besides assuming good faith) I've seen WPians do some pretty amazing things in group organizational efforts, so I sincerely believe it could be done.

One of the other concerns raised about the generally less than ideal quality of these articles is that loads of malformed stubs reflect badly on the project to the general public. I'm not an old-timer, but I have never understood why WP doesn't have a template to counter this, which says something like, "Hello reader! Everything on a wiki is subject to improvement, but this is a true Work in Progess. Please bear with us as we work to bring this category to a higher standard." Quite apart from the cleanup tag, this could be used to specify groups of articles... pokemon stubs too, for example... that don't quite epitomize editorial beauty yet. :)

I hope that helps clarify. I'll say again, I have no love for school articles, and if a fiat came down from on high that they were gone, I wouldn't shed a tear. As long as WPians determine for themselves what belongs here, though, I don't see much point in fighting a good-faith determined 40% minority, which is what school-lovers are -- and I join them, vote-wise, to attempt to stop the fight.

Anyway, I'm sure you get this question a lot, but... given your username, can you really make a machine gun out of match-sticks, or a submarine out of rubber bands and glue? ;)

Best wishes, Xoloz 16:43, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I'm making an argument I only half-way believe, but the difference between GW Bush and John Doe High School in Smithberg, AZ is that the latter does teach me something I didn't know. It's trivial, I don't really care, but it is marginally more useful than a Bush substub. If I were a school-nut, I suppose learning about a new school this way might motivate me to research it. Another point the school-lovers raise which I find not entirely wrong is the appeal to Smithbergers, and Arizonans maybe. If a kid will get a kick out of seeing his school, or one he knows in his town/state on WP, I don't really object, as long as everything in the school article (however tiny it is) is WP:V and WP:NPOV. If refining that article gets him hooked on us, that's great!

This local appeal comes at a cost to the overall quality of WP in the short run, but -- as I said -- I think the way to minimize the ugliness of these stubs is a special "Work in Progess" tag. WP gets all the benefits, and don't think many would hold it against us. The special "work in progress" could even be school-specific -- "Wikipedia supports your child's school, and encourages school articles. These articles are "Works in Progress" by our young editors, so bear with us as we expand and improve."

Anyway, best wishes, Xoloz 21:52, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
